I've used the shade cloth from HD before and it held up quite well for many trips to the playa. I just used a grommit kit and folded over the corners to give it a little extra strength.

Having used both types, I'd recommend the platform rack. It is much easier to put the bikes on, as you don't have to fuss getting frame on the hanging rack arms just right. Just set it in the holders and strap it in. The platform is also good if your bike is heavy or you are bringing multiple bikes....

If you are good at sewing or know someone who is, you can make one for a reasonable price. I made a few for the playa last year with a few different fabric types.
