Thanks for making this happen!

It's great that you're making available interviews with some of the key personalities behind Burning Man. If you're accepting input on who to interview next, I'd like to hear more from Michael Michael on the future of Burning Man.

FOUND! My Wedding Ring!

As reported last week in the JRS Vol 10, Issue 6, my wedding ring was miraculously discovered by DPW member Red Michelle on the Esplanade during cleanup. It was returned to me and is now firmly back on my finger! I now consider myself married to the Black Rock Desert and will forever cherish the ret...

LOST: Man's Gold Wedding Ring

Help! I've worn this ring every day for 20+ years, but on Sunday afternoon I took it off and stuck it in my pocket so that I could play drums without getting a blister. When I reached into the pocket to put it back on, it was GONE! It's a man's gold wedding band, a simple, traditional domed design. ...

You may be thinking of the Pillow Fight Club. It was a big, elevated trampoline surrounded by a mesh enclosure and filled with dozens of white pillows. The fights were extremely vigorous, leaving the combatants exhausted and exhilarated. Great concept and wonderful execution!

Sounds like a serious MOOP issue. I can't imagine the DPW was too happy about those. I've thought it would be cool to try some helium balloon art, but the issue of blowing MOOP has helped me to decide against it. What were you thinking?

My Wedding Ring?????

The inscription inside reads: LBM - JWH 8/17/85 I am my beloved's Could it really be? I've been very sad about losing this ring. As you can tell from the date, we recently celebrated our 20th anniversary. I took it off to drum on Sunday afternoon, put it in a pocket where I thought it would be safe,...

Re: The 2004 theme is going to be a lotta fun!!!!!

And I wonder what the Man's stand will be like this year? Will it be on top of a spaceship, like a NASA ship ready for take off, in vertical position...then when the Man burns, it'll look like BLASTOFF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (that would be kinda cool, but that was just all from my mind) I dunno about ...

HullabalU in Kansas

Sorry the information didn't get up BEFORE the event, but the first-ever HullabalU regional burn/decompression happened on Saturday, October 11 about 4 mi outside of Lawrence, Kansas. There were about 80 people in attendance, including the Djembe Kaan drum circle, firedancers, and lots of good, good...

Flushing Out My Head

Burning Man always falls during the second week of Fall semester classes, which means I need to miss a day or two of teaching in order to attend. However, the experience provides a welcome and refreshing re-orientation to the new school year. I never tell students where I'm going since I enjoy the r...

The burning bike rider was one of the best pieces I saw this year. It was brilliant in conception and masterful in execution. I've also got just a few seconds of video. I wish I had more. It was truly a vision from Hell.

Burning Man as a Business

Despite the "no commerce" rhetoric, it's clear that a number of burners are making money, breaking even, or at least recouping some of their expenses by engaging in Burning Man related business activities. This includes professional photographers who sell their images (giving BMorg a 10% cut if they...

Re: this horse is still twitching...

The greatest evidence that this is in operation comes when you meet a first-timer who is also a first-timer to the US. People just get it, regardless of their nationality or cultural conditioning, because at its heart, Burningman celebrates universal values using globalized cultural referant...

Re: dead horse

Sadly, the issue of race in America is far from being a dead horse. It will be a long time before we can escape our history, even if we can pretend--for several days in a remote Nevada desert--that it doesn't really exist. I agree with tepepinda on everything but the following statement: The culture...

Re: Mostly White People or Just a Lot of Playa Dust?

It's also interesting to see you categorize all the white folk as tight-asses while the people of color who would attend do not have this distinction. As if people of color go to celebrate their culture while white folk go to appropriate and create their own exclusive party time. I didn't categoriz...

I imagine some folks would be a little amused at the suggestion that there is one monolithic perspective dictated by race. When was THAT suggested? I think you're a bit naive to think that members of these groups do not experience their "race" on a regular basis in a fashion different from members ...

Burning Man or Burning Bush?

The Burning Man and the Golden Calf undoubtedly have a lot in common. Picture Larry Harvey emerging from a giant dust devil carrying tablets inscribed "If it didn't come from your body, don't put it in the potty", "Leave No Trace", and the like.

Mostly White People or Just a Lot of Playa Dust?

I will always love this event for giving tight-assed white people a good excuse to cut loose, but was anyone besides me bothered by the poverty of ethnic diversity at Burning Man? Sure, I saw a number of African-Americans, Hispanics, Asians, and even an American Indian couple, but the demographics o...
