Another way of looking at it, once you're been to Burning Man once or twice, what will be the payoff for going back again and again? Isn't it like seeing a movie over and over, expecting to get something new out of it, while the experience doesn't change all that much from year to year? I mean ther...

Bartering is frowned upon. If you follow through you can expect a goodly amount of shit to fly your way for doing it. Actually, that's not true. Some want this to be a pure 'gift economy', and that's fine. But that fact of the matter is, when you give somebody something, you're likely to get someth...

Hmm, for electrolyte replacement try gookinaide http://www.gookinaid.com/ I have used this for over a year and it is THE BEST. It is not a thick sweet taste, kinda like very watery kool aide but it puts ALL the electrolytes back not just sodium and it is fast . Just so everybody knows, when they sa...

Dude, if you have a sweet dome and are willing to share it, your neighbors will probably help make space for it, even if there's not a 60x60 empty area immediately available. I mean, don't expect to be able to "claim" that big a spot, but people will usually work with you if you've got a structure t...

Machine, great job on the dome structure, by the way. It's great to see a unique dome design as opposed to the gazillions of standard geodesic domes out on the playa. Can't wait to check it out! About getting there, you won't have a problem finding a good spot in the 8-9:00 area if you get there on ...

Re: keeping food frozen
Yet another reason why I should have taken Chemistry.... I am confused. I thought rock salt was what they use to MELT the snow and ice on the roads in winter. And now you all are talking about using it to make better ice. You would think with a name like Icepack, I would understand this, but sadly ...

Re: keeping food frozen
So... remind me again.... the rock salt needs to go on TOP of the ice, right? Does this really work? I know you use rock salt somehow to MAKE ice cream in those old fashioned ice cream makers, but I can't for the life of me remember how the hell this works... Two things make this work: 1. Dissoluti...

Lysergic, Whether it's like 2001 or 1997 or 2003, doesn't make much difference -- there'll be plenty of dust storms, so count on that. And I don't recall it being THAT much harder to ride a bike in '01. On the other hand, I was out on the playa in May this year and it was very very soft... about an ...

Another option is dry ice, as big a block as possible in an airtight cooler so it lasts all week. Two big perks of this method: 1. Ice cream sandwiches on Friday, and 2. Not having to stand in the ice line ever again (bring some ice cube trays) Solid CO2 does evaporate fast, so it's important to hav...

Hey Wildeone, Forget this Eplaya crap. Seriously. You're gonna have a blast, and as long as you read up on the official material and prepare, you'll be fine. Again, forget all of this and just get stoked for the experience of your life. As your attorney, I advise you to log off and not look back unt...

Well, it's a good idea to expand your horizons, especially your first few years. One of the great things about Black Rock City is the way camp location influences the experience. It's true that each block is different, and somehow most blocks stay roughly the same each year. So you may end up back a...

Unless you have air conditioning you probably won't be able to sleep much past sunrise. It's too hot. That's when you wander around meeting your neighbors, looking at art, etc. It's good to have something interesting to wear while doing this, but overall costumes are less common during the day. Whi...

Re: SealBoy
SealBoy, I have a few problems with your list. Specifically poison-ivy lotion and water purification tablets. Yes, I should have taken the time to pull things off the BSA list that do not apply to the desert environment. I apologize for the mistake. Your additional items were good recommendations. ...

Astronomers wanted!
I know a lot of people who are stoked about the theme this year (it's gonna be awesome), but there are some people who are positively ecstatic: that's right, astronomy dorks! Are you an amateur or professional astronomer? Do you enjoy explaining the wonders of the night sky to the public? Does being...

As I understand it, "vault of heaven" is a term for the celestial sphere, or the apparent spherical shell on which ancient astronomers thought the stars were embedded like jewels. In this case, "heaven" doesn't necessarily mean the place you (er, well... some people) go when you die -- it refers to ...

SealScouting for All has a simelar list--and adds condoms, lube, gloves and dental dams. Condoms and lube should be kept separate from your first-aid kit to avoid confusion in a medical emergency. KY jelly won't really help a gaping wound... though a dental dam might help prevent infection... hmmm....

For seals, the playa is especially dangerous. Keeping your pelt wet in Black Rock City is a daunting task; yet with a little help from your primate friends you will find that the desert can be almost as much fun as a barnacled boat launch in Monterey. An elder seal gave me these recommendations: Inf...
