Re: Beer

We brought some homebrew in bottles just because that's the only way my husband can bring his beer out to the playa. Other than that we packed a ton of beer in cans. I 100% agree with Danibel that you can get many decent beers in cans now. Some canned brews that we enjoy all year long include Dale's...

Re: Costume & Crafting Help

Is anyone planning costumes for a Decompression event? I've been thinking about this... but since I haven't started yet and SF Decom is on Sunday, it's probably too late! I'll probably wear something I loved wearing on the playa. I didn't really have any costumes, more like outfits. I have been usi...

Re: One Item for BM a Day

I've been thinking about one as well. Where did you buy? What one did you get? I bought mine on ebay through Button Boy. It's a Tecre model and makes 1 1/4" buttons. I bought a package that included the punch cutter to cut out the paper circles. It also came with a TON of button-making pieces ...

Re: One Item for BM a Day

After coveting button machines for over twenty years, I finally bought one! It is amazing. I loved the design of the Survival Guide this year, so I made a bunch of buttons out of our household's extra copy (keeping one copy whole since I like to hold onto stuff like that for sentimental reasons). Th...

Re: Long Hair Poll

I have long, straight, thick hair. During the day on the playa I wear it in two tight buns on top of my head, then tie a scarf or bandana on as a headband. Each night (or morning!) before going to sleep I take it down from the buns, finger-comb it a little, and put it up in one high, loose bun. This...

Re: Black Rock City Yarn Shop

Can we get an update on how the yarn store went? I was very sad to find out about it only after returning from the playa. I would have loved to contribute yarn and could have helped with beginner knitting lessons. Do you folks hope to return next year?

Re: What 'worked' and what didn't make the cut.

Three bins of clothing, and only about one bin's worth worn. Last year I figured out that just because it's Burning Man doesn't mean I'm suddently going to like frilly, excessively furry, or neon stuff. And I don't like stockings, which I find to be uncomfortable. This year I learned that I a...

Re: What I learned at Burning Man was:

I learned that I actually CAN let down my guard and have real, serious, meaningful conversations with people. It took a lot of courage to be "real", and it was so worth the effort. I'm usually afraid that people will think I'm a downer, or I don't speak up because I don't have my words per...

Re: Playa gift ideas

The best gift we received this year was help from some awesome neighbors as we put up our shade structure in the wind. Last year's weather allowed for just two people to assemble the carport, but support from our community was necessary this year! Everyone was so nice, and it was a great way to get ...

Re: Goggles in SF?

Sports Basement has decent goggles for around ten bucks. They aren't amazing, but they're cheap and when I was there (the one on Bryant Street) a week ago they had a bunch of them. They stock them specifically for Burning Man, and if you mention Burning Man they'll give you a ten percent discount.

My heart has been doing a happy dance ever since. :D

Re: Time lapse 2011

This video is such a gift. Thank you for sharing, you made my day! The dust patterns in the wind are so beautiful. As a first timer in 2011 I know I haven't experienced the wrath of the dust, but the mini flurries I experienced transfixed me.

Seriously, thank you! I will be watching this repeatedly.

if you pack light and sleep in a little tent i dont see how you can do much better than one of these fancy thermarest type of self inflating things. This is what I used, and I slept like a rock all week. We also brought an inflatable air mattress, but the power inverter we brought didn't work with ...

4--Bring your own cup. This is very important! I thought everyone would know to carry a cup, but I saw a lot of people without cups who had to turn down delicious cold drinks because the drink-offerer either didn't have cups to begin with or had run out. Also, smile. I think sharing a big smile and...

Re: Anyone have playa regrets?

As someone who constantly struggles with regret, I was pleasantly surprised that I regret nothing about my experience at Burning Man. This was my first year and I certainly learned a lot, and there are some things I'd do differently next year, but I am uncharactaristically at peace with the imperfec...

Re: SF Decompression: October 9th 2011 Heat The Streat FaIRE

I was pretty disappointed at how hard it was to talk to people. I guess I figured that the friendliness of the playa would be present at Decompression. I agree that there seemed to be a lot of folks who haven't been to Burning Man, so maybe they thought I was weird for saying hello in passing or tr...

Hi all! I'm Amber and 2011 was my first year. I lurked on eplaya for about nine months before heading out to the desert, and I am so grateful for all of the advice I found here. I haven't posted much so far because I was able to get just about all of my questions answered by searching and doing lots...

Lemur, those are incredible. I especially love the one of all the lamps lined up. Volunteering with the Lamplighters on the first night of my first burn was one of my most memorable experiences. Your photos warmed my heart.

I don't have a playa name, and my real name is Amber. I had *several* people ask, "Is that a playa name?" I got a kick out of that! :D
