Marbles
Thanks EDB. I think I'm just a glutton for punishment. I wanted a real challenge this year for Burning Man; my goal is to push myself every year to do something different, new, exciting and this seemed like the best idea I'd had in years. Just adding 2 cents to what gyre said... The final se...

Undaunted
Hey wildilocks! Great to hear back from you, though I'm sorry to hear that you didn't take the ride. Funny, the evening you wrote your reply (May 9), I pulled up at the relatively new Cafe Gratitude in San Rafael to celebrate my birthday and who should be there but a guy on an Xtracycle FreeRadical ...

Thanks
Thanks SunshineSuzy! This is the longest bicycle trip I'll have ever taken, so I'm excited and nervous as well. I know it's going to feel pretty good to roll in the gate and be able to pass all the cars and RV's stuck waiting. No celebratory brewski will ever be as sweet... Inre: craigslist. Keep lo...

Re: Helps... a bit
Well, I never did hear back from wildilocks, but several people on bikely.com stepped up to the plate and drew me some maps. I also found the adventure bicycle association has a national route called the Western Express . I'll be using it from Vallejo to Carson City, at which point I'll be using THI...

Helps... a bit
It helps... but I've contacted wildilocks via P.M for an update on how she fared, what she took, and which route she took... if she permits it, I'll post her route details here and on my blog and then when I complete the journey , my travelogue will be posted at crazyguyonabike.com and the route wil...

one caveat...
I slept in my truck last year, and it was a bit cramped. Of course, it's a 2000 Chevy S10 with borrowed camper shell for Burning Man. Not exactly roomy. I built a quonset style hut with open ends over it with 1" PVC, shade cloth and cut up used bicycle innertubes. I had a borrowed tent to put all my...

Biking to Burning Man 2007
Greetings out there! I'm starting to plan now to ride to Burning Man 2007 from Novato CA (just north of San Francisco about 20 miles). In doing this, I realized the need for good maps, and even better routing from people who've done similar journeys. I've posted at Bikely.com and I will probably pos...

Howdy Neighbors!
Hey, we were camped directly across the street from y'all (Camp Armgeddon). We didn't notice this little wonder though until Monday right before it was taken down (it was blocked from our view by a big vehicle), but we came over to admire the handiwork. I've been trying for 2 years to come up with a...

It depends I think...
I'm pretty sure it depends on the strength of the scanning equipment. A very powerful scanner could probably do it from 100' away, but I don't know this for sure.

Re: Art bike trailer
I'm looking ideas/ suggestions of how to attach an 8 x 4 foot platform that will be on 2, 3 or 4 wheels to a regular bycyle that can pull this trailer. Ideally it could be pulled with one or 2 bikes. Usually will be pulled with one. I'm concerned about the turning radius and "give" it would need so...

Hey, I'm down to run some routes and be the surly, drunken bicycle messenger from Camp Armageddon… or maybe just be a drunken, loud mouthed, redneck, slackjawed, broke-toof, ugliest-cross-dressing-woman-bicycle-messenger-named-Kiki-you-ever saw. Sound appealing? See Kiki and you might change your mi...

Re: How to gift wedding ceremonies?
I too am an ordained minister and performed 9 weddings at Burning Man last year. It was a wonderful experience. None of the couples that I married cared about or wanted a "legal" wedding, though I did attend one wedding in 2004 that WAS a legal BM wedding. As for how I went about it... I contacted t...

Precipitating the contaminants
In 2003, some folks (one who happens to be someone I went to high school with) brought out the Freshmakkur, a rather complicated way of purifying their grey water. Their website is : http://www.freshmakkur.org/tech.html . Their whole system is too elaborate for most camps b/c most people don't inten...

Zero Residue Soap?
Just curious: what soap leaves no residue? I too am dealing with a large amount of grey water (not as much as you though) and my knowledge of swamp coolers and sump pumps has led me to abandon that route for a simpler method. Do you have any photos or design plans for your swamp cooler system? I'd b...

Re: Saddle bags?
I *just* bought a bike (as mentioned earlier, a new one because of my height). And, as often mentioned, I want to ride out to Black Rock Point (about 10 miles away). So I'll be getting used to the bike and getting my biking muscles in shape between now and then. Be aware that going beyond the perim...

Bike locks and theft
i am coming from the east coast and need to rent or borrow two bikes......any ideas Rummage sales along the way perhaps? I picked one up for ten bucks. What kind of bike locks are the best to use? If there's nothing to lock it to do you just lock the wheels up? What about people taking the seat, does that happen? My vote is for the U-lock with the combo on the barrel. I bought mine at Mike's Bikes in san rafael, CA. I've used it for 2 years now, a...

If you didn't wash your bike and lube your chain/gears after last year (like I didn't), check your chain, it may be in need of replacement. I just looked and mine's all rusted and unhappy. The best dry lube I've found for playa use is PROLINK. Not all bike shops sell it, but they should. I don't li...

Novato dyslexic burnerns UNTIE!
Hey Meg, Sparky here. This will be my 7th consecutive burn, so although I may have no idea what I'm talking about in the "real" world, I do live in Novato and I have seen BM in many of it's iterations. If you have any questions or want to see more pics, I have lots of semi useless advice about the p...

So... remind me again.... the rock salt needs to go on TOP of the ice, right? Does this really work? I know you use rock salt somehow to MAKE ice cream in those old fashioned ice cream makers, but I can't for the life of me remember how the hell this works... last yr I took a colman xtreme cooler , ...
