This is what we used last year: http://www.cloudtops.com/greenhouse_shade_cloth.htm The 80% black, knitted stuff. It was awesome. By mid-morning the temperature difference between outside and inside our shade structure was probably around 15+ degrees. The wind goes right through it, but it does filt...

Hotel Rwanda
Just saw Hotel Rwanda starring Don Cheadle the other day. It's a great movie, though quite disturbing. It's a story based on true events that occurred during the civil war / genocide in Rwanda in the mid 90s. It was a very powerful film. On a lighter note, Lemony Snickets was also quite good. Jim Ca...

http://www.homeofpoi.com also has some free instruction. The video clips are great. In less than 2 weeks, I've learned a number of basic techniques from that website.

There are a number of things that I think I did right for my first burn, beginning with saying what the hell and deciding to trust someone from this forum who I'd never met. He offered some space to transport some of our stuff, so we decided to caravan with him. Turned out he also made the same offe...

If you have a YKK zipper then do NOTHING. You made me curious as my, and most other high quality tents are made with YKK zippers these days, so I did a little googling. From the YKK website ( http://www.ykkindia.com/abzip/main.htm ) SUITABLE METHOD OF CLEANING A zipper should be closed and the slid...

It was my first year at BM. I thought the pre-burn show was great. It had been a little over-hyped all week by friends, so my expectations were extremely high when I got there. As a result, it didn't hit me as amazing from the get-go. However, the only thing that I thought could be improved was the ...

Pee funnels don't work with shit. The signs advertising pee funnels all warned that the directions must be read. If you did not read them and got pee on yourself, that's what you get. If a guy gave you one and didn't tell you the directions then you should pee on him in return. If you followed the ...

My hands were hurting pretty bad after dinging them up while getting my structure/tent put together. I found that being religious with bandaids over any exposed skin cracks or cuts, plus using a Dr. Bronner's wash & vinegar rinse actually brought them back to pretty good shape by midweek. Basically ...

After some research at Home Depot and actually pricing things out, I've decided against the metal structure after all. I've actually decided to basically mimic the concept that Max Icon came up with here: http://www.maxicon.com/Burning_Man/PVC_Structures/pvc_on_the_playa.htm And if this doesn't work...

Joe from Livermore... get thee to the flea market or surplus store and get some proper connectors, the type they use on flea market awnings, if you're already plumb stuck on conduit. Not really plump stuck on it. It just seems to be the cheapest, most efficient way to do it. I have the same fears a...

Hi there. Long time listener, first time caller. I'm trying to cook up my own shade structure, to cover my tent and hang out area for a 2 virgin campsite. My current idea is to use our minivan as 1 anchor, the windy side hopefully. I'll probably just drive the wheels right onto 1 edge of the tarp, t...
