Jumping 20 years into Burning Man

September 2, 1991, Spadaro's Airport, New York - Three of us stood there in front of the ancient Cessna 206 - me and two fellow first jump students. This would be my third attempt to get in the air. The first two attempts were scuttled by wind and clouds, all too common during early fall on Long Isl...

Re: Help, please Electrical Question

The pictures are back up at the craigslist link. OK, you have a 240 volt panel, but nothing in your panel requires 240 volts; all the circuits in the picture are 120 volt circuits. That means you can connect the red and black wires in the old cord to the black wire in the new cord. White goes to wh...

Re: Help, please Electrical Question

Red is+, black is-. In AC wiring, white is neutral, green is ground, black and red are hot. Often black and red are opposite sides of a 240 volt circuit. In newer solar and DC installations, white is generally negative, red or black is positive. In older DC installations (car stereos etc) red is + ...

Re: gonna buy a deep cycle battery & inverter. Recommendatio

Thanks for the advice... but not sure what you mean by "use a fuse" ...? some sort of inline fuse in the battery cable? Yes. Radio Shack sells inline fuse holders. Generally you'll be using fairly thick (10-12 gauge) wires going to crimp-on connectors (or alligator clips if you like living dangerou...

Re: gonna buy a deep cycle battery & inverter. Recommendatio

>Any recommendations on where to buy an affordable yet capable deep cycle battery? Depends on your loads. Figure out how much each of your loads uses, multiply by the number of hours a day you will want to use it, add all of them together, and that will give you how many watt hours you need. For 100...

Re: cooling your tent or van

Question: Could I turn greywater into something safe to use in a swamp cooler using a backpacking-style hand pumped water filter? I'd say no, that's low output and clogs very fast if you are looking at crypto-rated (i.e. small pore) filters. Our graywater system used a metal mesh filter and that go...

Re: Art cars

Would that be ICE COLD Beer? Depends on the beer! The saison and wheat beers will be cold; the imperial stout will be a little warmer. (And available on tap if you stop by Burning Sky.) And which half of a flight would you desire, the front half or the back half? Just the front half; I'll get out b...

All I can offer is some very good beer. But then again I'd only ask for half a flight.

Re: Batteries - rent/buy/donate?

OK thanks for the suggestions. Sounds like my best bet will be to stop by the alternative energy zone on Sunday morning with the batteries. I may need some help getting them over there; not sure how many T105's I can carry on a bike. We're in the Burning Sky camp at 5 and Graduation. I'll also have ...

Re: cooling your tent or van

Can I use a small solar power water pump and a battery operated tent fan? Both are going to be pretty underpowered. If you want to run them via a solar system, then a regular 12V fan and a 12V pump (as listed in the first post) and a medium sized panel (20-30 watts) would work pretty well. The dema...

Glass bottles?

Any problem bringing in glass bottles? I'm planning on bringing a few cases of homebrew and giving them away. I can haul them out if people return them, although I'm not going to insist.

Fair enough. How fast does the line move? Are you creeping at 5mph for 5 hours or is it start and stop? (i.e. can you shut off the engine between traffic surges)

Given that, what's the best time to arrive (to minimize time in line) if the plan is to arrive on 8/29?

Batteries - rent/buy/donate?

I plan on using 4 T105 Trojan batteries for our power system this year. I don't want to cart them from San Diego, so I plan on buying them in Reno. But lugging them back to San Diego seems like a silly use of gas as well, especially since I don't have a use for them here. So: 1) I assume that the id...
