Looking for burners in Thailand, India

I'm backpacking through Thailand and India in the upcoming months and would love to connect with some international burners (or USA burners also travelling).

With love,

Re: Student needs access to computer w/ internet

Thanks for the somewhat helpful, somewhat snarky comments. We had already arranged with a friend to register for her as a contingency plan, but we figured we'd see what we could arranged ahead of time on playa. I didn't think about the Gerlach option, so thanks for that idea. It's funny, as a somewh...

Re: Lighting Plan - requesting comments

Re: the math I find it way easier to convert battery capacity to Watt-hours, rather than working in Amp-hours. A 100Ah-12V battery has max 1200 Watt-hours, of which you can count on about half, so 600 Watt-hours. Which is 60 hours of your 10W bulb. Almost enough for the 80 hours you wanted; add a t...

Re: Lighting Plan - requesting comments

Thanks for the replies, so I'm taking it that my math is solid? The reviews of the light seemed like that it is designed as 12VDC with the transformer to 120A/C installed for their AC version. I've ordered ahead of time to hopefully allow for returns & reshipment if they send me the wrong model. I t...

Lighting Plan - requesting comments

I'm building a deep playa art installation, hoping to power a single 10W DC flood light w/ a single battery. (light - http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005MLXAF4) I asked around on eplaya in the past and got some good advice on the math. From what I understand, the light (DC) consumes 10 watts / 12V...

Student needs access to computer w/ internet

Hi all. My wife needs to register for her school classes during the burn but obviously we don't plan to have a computer, internet, etc. and using smartphones isn't reliable. Does anyone know of a camp or group that could allow her to use a computer w/ internet for 15 minutes or so that week? I'm thi...

Thanks for all the responses. I'm still not sure if I'll show or cover the brands, but at least this gives me some opinions and input to weigh in the process. See you on the playa!

Art question - brand names on boxes?

Hey all, So I'm working on an art project which itself is part commentary on commercialism. As part of it, there will be a small piles of boxes (amongst other things) representing the material world. That said, I was planning to use appliance, computer, electronics, etc. boxes but it crossed my mind...

Re: Solar / Battery Power for Art Project

Thanks guys, this info is really helpful. I reassessed my situation and have decided to try to just use 2 15w (hopefully DC) floodlights powered by battery (consuming ~300w/night) and do the rest with solar lanterns I have laying around. The floodlights are the true thing lighting the piece while th...

Re: Solar / Battery Power for Art Project

Sorry, can't edit my original thread. I'm continuing to research. Based on what I read, I'm thinking I need less lighting as my planned flood lights are ~15 watts/each * 16 lights = way too much usage. I figure that if I can keep consumption at less than 250 watts/night, it would be best to just buy...

Solar / Battery Power for Art Project

Hi all, I've fully planned my art project except for one item: lighting! I'd like to avoid generators at all cost since I both have nowhere to store them and just don't like them. I'm looking to power about 16 CFL or LED flood lights during the nights on the playa. Looking at other people's posts fo...

Re: Art Project help - guywires

Thanks everyone. What's the fascination with T stakes? I see them mentioned in multiple threads re: rigging art projects, typically with U bolts. What type of benefit does it provide me versus rebar pounded 1' in and a 4x4 or chain link / cyclone fence post atop said rebar? They both seem to need gu...

Re: Art Project help - guywires

Ahhh, I'm actually planning to use steel poles instead, hence my concerns regarding the holes. I think I'd have some significant issues getting 4x4's into the playa without heavy equipment. I'll have to look around for past project with a similar design and see how they handled the issue.

Re: Art Project help - guywires

Thanks some seeing eye. Re: the eyebolts, do you have 4 eyebolts per pole for your shade cloth rigging (2 for the structure, 2 for the guywires)? I was planning to use eyebolts for the cable running between each pole but was concerned that adding two more eyebolts for the guywires would have a negat...

Art Project help - guywires

I'm working on an art project, the main structure of which will be a 30' open air square. The square will be formed by fabric hanging from guy-wires running between each of the four corners which will be 8' tall poles. There will likely be an extra pole or two between each 30' span for support. Rega...

Re: 2013 Theme - Cargo Cult - thoughts?

It does have a nice social / burner commentary aspect to it. Personally, I knew nothing of the cargo cults until this, so its enlightening as well. The more I read about it, the more I like it. In my view, it seems to be a manifestation / commentary on decommodification, which should spark some inte...

2013 Theme - Cargo Cult - thoughts?

So its up: http://burningman.com/art_of_burningman/bm13_theme.html My first thought was WTF? The man base sounds very ambitious and techy. Granted it fits with the theme very well, but I (personally) had hoped for a return to a simpler base. That said, there's a lot of possibilities art-wise. Any ch...

I looked through the YOUtopia website and did some "googling" but couldn't find much. Things I'm interested in are: -Layout of the event -...

Re: Does this shade structure need guy lines? Running riggi

We're going w/ bungee balls this year too. Last year we attached our tarps w/ zipties. That seemed both wasteful and provided no flex. Part of the design of the monkey hut / PVC shade structure is to allow a little flexibility which reduces the overall load it needs to bear. The small flex of the bu...

Re: tent stakes

+1 on the vice grips. Last year was our first w/ the PVC shade structure / monkey hut. We use 2' rebar, driven 1' in. Clamp the vice grips on the rebar, twist a few times, and the stakes came right up w/ minimal effort. We candy caned a few rebars, but they ended up being very difficult to pound in ...

Re: Keen Newport Open Shoes okay for Playa?!?

I wore flip flops for a good portion of the burn last year and didn't have any major problems. That said, my feet were pretty dry by the end of the week. Regardless of if you wear shoes or not, do the vinegar foot-washing that many people recommend. Its a real life saver.

That sounds like a good idea. Thank you for posting. You said that you had not preformed a "test run" of the monkey hut before you got to the playa. Did you buy your PVC at home and travel with it, or did you buy it in Reno? I'm flying in, and therefore can't bring PVC pipe. I've got a sneaking sus...

Monkey Hut measuring suggestion

This year was my wife and I's first burn. We used the monkey hut measurements from multiple people on the forum and it worked out great, even though we didn't even do a practice run before getting there. The only problem was that our stakes weren't perfectly square, causing a slight twist in the hut...
