Re: The playa and amplified sound
As someone who will be bringing amplified sound to our camp because I really enjoy playing, playing with, and listening to music, I hope to contribute a bit of "I haven't heard this song in forever!!" and a fair helping of "what the hell IS that?" to the soundscape. All I know for sure is that nothi...

Re: What do you like to hear on the Playa?
I am glad this thread has gone the way it has. These descriptions are much more interesting than you guys saying some of your favorite bands. (but thank you to those who are saying favorite bands! I'm definitely gonna check out those samba/bossa nova artists. thats a genre I always enjoy, but know n...

Re: What do you like to hear on the Playa?
From these responses, I take it the eplaya doesn't listen to music much? Fair enough. Read the responses again. I think most people here like music and listen to it. The playa is just... different. The music is pervasive. The whole place just thrums at all hours of the day. And you can find it all....

Re: What do you like to hear on the Playa?
That pulsating sound emanating from all different directions that makes you feel like you're in the middle of some massive space battle... If you don't know what I'm describing, you should probably just ditch that music you think you'll be "grooving to" at the playa, because you won't use it. What ...

Re: What do you like to hear on the Playa?
and as a virgin secondly...as a first year camp, you may want to think about maybe creating something other than a "dance club & chill space" which seems to be a trap many fall into....there are THOUSANDS of camps like youre describing........nobody goes there.....seriously. sure, it's fun to have ...

Re: What do you like to hear on the Playa?
Awesome. Have you guys seen many live metal bands out in the dust? I would be so amped if I came upon a righteous live metal band. The more similar to this the better: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GrVUFWJ_CAw I'm surprised I hear so much about DJs and so little about bands. DJ equipment seems muc...

What do you like to hear on the Playa?
Hey friends, Our camp is planning on putting together a sound system of sorts, and as a virgin I was wondering what your favorite sounds are out on the Playa. I have some Ideas about what I'd like to hear, but I imagine many of you are into some pretty awesome music that I have never even heard of. ...

Re: Metayurt (3 hexayurts sharing interior walls)
We do a similar structure, though we don't "share" the walls. We just abut the walls and seal them with tape. And there are only two of us using the structure. It makes for a very comfortable abode. We air condition it and have instant hot water showers, freezer and refrigerator and a playa tech el...

Re: Metayurt (3 hexayurts sharing interior walls)
I've never really been a yurt guy myself, but it seems to me that as the number of yurts increases (or as the yurt farm grows), they'd lose their appeal. They never get any prettier or cheaper per square foot of shade. Plus the yurt panels are kind of a pain to transport and store, IMO. We hauled a...

Metayurt (3 hexayurts sharing interior walls)
Hey all, My camp (30 people or so) is planning on using a few hexayurts for sleeping. I was thinking that if the yurts shared some walls, the structural integrity would not be compromised, but we'd be able to bring a few less walls, and minimize the dust flow. Here is what I was thinking. http://i.i...

Re: Disco Dome part 2
Thanks so much for the replies folks! Using a reflective fabric seems like it might solve a few of the potential problems. A cut, hem, grommet, and zip tie approach might work with the right fabric. I fear it will get a bit pricey, but if its done right the cover should last at least a few years yea...

Disco Dome part 2
Hey gang, A few of you may remember this thread from about a year ago asking about the feasibility of building a Disco Ball looking dome on the playa http://eplaya.burningman.org/viewtopic.php?f=78&t=46274 Well this year I got my ticket and really want to make this idea happen! I'm camping with some...

Thanks for the warm welcome all! This forum doesn't seem nearly as grumpy as most online forums. The community is just intolerant of ignorance, which I understand. Relative anonymity tends to make people that way. If you start preparing now, you will most likely NOT be inadequately prepared! 6 month...

Hello ePlaya!
My name is Tim and 2013 will be my first burn. I made an appearance on the ePlaya a year or so ago when I was learning about Burning Man but now that I am actually going, I figured I might as well introduce myself. I'm finishing college in NYC right now, but I come from Los Angeles. I love visual, a...

Peace wants love, Will help

I was wondering how I could apply my skills to making burning man a better time for all involved. Are serious connections made on the ePlaya? Should i approach specific camps offering help...

Great! Thanks so much for the advice.Ugly Dougly wrote:Mylar or something like it would be a good choice.
A one-way mirror usually has plenty of tint. If you have vent at the top as well as the bottom, it will create its own airflow.
Have fun at the Burn, see you next year I hope.

Re: Have we ever liked a Theme?
I like Rites of Passage for a theme. It is a little too broad though, but I guess that's the point. Wouldn't it be interesting if the burn had a very specific theme? I often find that the more restrictive the guidelines, the more creative people are/ have to be to meet them. What if the theme was Go...

Great idea! Jiffy pop is one of the most exciting/ satisfying things in the world. The smoke from cooking on an open fire always makes the popcorn more yummy

people enjoy threes.
holy trinity, 3 2 1, 3 good star wars movies etc.
Cycles of three have a built in beginning middle and end, which I think the mind enjoys.

Re: Worth, price, and scalping
I experienced something like this with Coachella this year. Tickets selling out so quickly made it so a higher percentage of the crowd were the die hard fans that really wanted to be there, which I think created a better vibe. Maybe I just projected that vibe onto the crowd because I knew how quickl...

Thanks for the replies all! I know that there are a lot of things in the way of doing this, which is why I am thinking about it a year early and asking for advice. My goal is to panel a dome with the exterior being reflective and the inside being heavily tinted, creating a one way mirror effect. I h...

Re: An Open letter to the Large Sound Camps.
This is a great idea. Say what you will about rave kids, but they certainly know how to listen to Dj's and performers. I remember how effective Will I Am and Lil Jon's appeals to the crowd were at EDC 2010 when it was turning into a shit show. People really did listen. It actually gave me a lot of r...

Re: Ideas on how to create an art piece dome cover
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tFLa3BIc7Lg I would attempt to do something like this but on a larger scale. Get a large piece of Cloth and Apply multiple coats of spray paint sprayed from a distance. The organic spread of the paint from the aerosol has a really great galactic dust effect, especially...

Secure Glass to Geodesic Dome
Hey all!
I am a hopeful future Burner who wants to bring something great to the Playa, so I have been thinking out possibilities for art pieces to bring to the 2012 burn.
Does anyone know a good way to panel a geodesic dome with glass? Would it be welding? Caulk?
Thanks!
