Need a space for your impromptu event?
Do you need a space to host your event or interactive playa gift? The Magic Lantern at EBB & Glow (3:15 and C) is a beautifully appointed space of opportunity. Our garlic-shaped lotus belle tavern is filled with old furniture, exotic curios, and comfy floor pillows, and is open to the public 24/7. Y...

Re: When A Plug & Play Camp Breaks Up With You...
Dude. GIANT cannisters of Mountain House are the way to go, paired with a small camp stove. Hot food, every day, supplemented with fresh food from our cooler. We have become quite adept at comfortably roughing it, while managing to shove everything we need into a Mazda 3. Incidentally, we saw they w...

Re: law enforcement 2013
We had the misfortune to arrive just as the gates were opening (early entry mixup... had to stay the night in Reno). Entry was terrible, and far from the usual happy dusty hug-and-greet. From the distance on the main road, we could see a string of flashing police lights glimmering in the distance, f...

Looking to contribute in the Bay Area
About us: I'm Monica. He's Rob. We were heavily involved in building Anubis last year. We're sort of part of East Bay Core, though we live out in Pacifica. As a team, we can make pretty much anything, and we're looking to use our skillset on an ambitious project this summer. Me: I'm a graphic design...

So glad people like the Anubis pendants!
I'm really looking forward to flexing my fabrication muscles to make perks swag for whatever our project is next year.

Re: What is better than Burning Man?
When I finally got out to Burning Man this year, I had done so much research into the event that I came with expectations (shame on me) that fit the actual experience almost exactly. I felt very little of the wonder and astonishment I think most first-timers experience. I had, in effect, cheated my...

Re: What is better than Burning Man?
What a great post. Maybe what you mean is other ways to have peak experiences? Rather than Peace Corps (2 year commitment, no real choice of country), you can sign up to teach English for a year in pretty much any country you want. Really low work commitment (usually under 20 hours a week), TONS of ...

I've heard mentions of trying to secure private land on which to permanently base the event. Are there any realistic options for this where you could get a comparable "playa" environment, or are most of those federal/state land? As I understand it, that would also eliminate the requirement for a po...

Re: Food: What's good/bad?
I second Mountain House. They come in big ol' $30 canisters on Amazon. That's about 10 servings, officially, and more like 8 servings realistically. Doesn't require refrigeration, doesn't go bad, packs light, and all you need is a pot of boiling water and you're set with a Real. Hot. Meal. Which act...

If you're not stickering over the label of the beer you're handing out, or stickering over the liquor in your bar, I see no reason to sticker over lip balm. It's a ton of work and extra money to order 1000 stickers and stick them on (lots of waste, too), or to special order custom labeled balm... fo...

So, was he simply jostled a bit and ran away? Because that's not any sort of justice in my book. I would've made him scrub it off himself, and go apologize / clean up all the camps that he tagged. Of course, if I were really angry, I'd have him pinned down and spray him with his own can head to toe....

I've done several Tortoise trips back in the day. It's a great experience. That's great to hear! It sounds like a good option for international students then. And I second the suggestions for National Parks. Every single one I've been to has well lived up to their designation as national treasures,...

One of the 10 principles is Radical Self-Reliance. So if you can't afford to take care of your basic needs at BM, then it's better to wait until you can better afford it. If you want other people to take care of everything for you, then be prepared to pay even more money for that (and get, in my opi...

I made the Anubis pendants out of our leftover wood for the IndieGoGo fundraiser. They're actually made from sliced up 2x4s that we've probably used as bracers during construction. We didn't have time to send most of them out before we left for the build, but they should be out now.

Re: What happened to the 57K tickets sold in 2012?
I've considered that even up until last year, people could plan and wait and get tickets up until very close to the event. People getting tickets a month or two ahead of time are more likely to know for sure they are going. But having the bulk of available tickets sell out six months before the even...

Playa is better'n gold bond is what the boys tell me Funny that. I developed a mad case of thigh chafe while building on the playa. Were the bikes locked? I know, right? To be fair, I had my locked bike stolen in 2010, but I'd never changed the lock from the default combination (0000). A good idea. This year we decided to stay for the temple burn, unlike 2011 when we left Sunday morning. While the burn was pretty, I don't think it was really worth the dangerous 2AM departure to the gate, 2.5hr wait (really not that bad), having to pull over to the side of the road to sleep at 5:3...

We left Sunday morning and drove , at reasonable speed, straight through the exits. "Never staying for another temple burn again," we thought, and patted ourselves on the back for our foresight. Then we heard that Monday Exodus was pretty much a non-issue either, with something like at most a 2 hour...

No, I'm curious too. There was such a fiasco over tickets selling out, and after they got BLM to raise the population gap to 60,000, they sold more tickets as well. Everyone was expecting a record attendance based on the fact that there were more tickets sold than ever. I think most people were surp...

Amazing burn. Had some regrets about not seeing everything we wanted to see, but BM is so big and constant that it's hard to have your cake and eat it too. We wanted to scheduled events this year, including morning Yoga classes and whatnot... and well, that's a trade-off between staying up until 9am...
