Re: Is calling a turnkey employee a "sherpa" racist?
Not racist, since the Sherpa are not a race. If you use "sherpa" to mean "schlepper," for fuck's sake, at least use lowercase.
Unnecessary appropriation, for sure. Who says, "Jew someone down" or "get gypped" any more? How are those different from calling the hired help "sherpa"?

Re: PAGE TWO
It's not Sherpas, it's sherpas. "Sherpa" is an ethnic group and takes a capital S; "sherpa" is hijacked, appropriated word that means "to schlep with minimal compensation." Do you use "Sherpa" as your last name? Are you ethnically Sherpa? Do you speak Sherpa? Could I find something more significant ...

Nothing of substance to add, except deep empathy. To those who tried but were unable to stop what sounds like an inevitable tragic outcome, I hope you can find ease and self-forgiveness (if you are holding any guilt or self-blame). To those across the Internet who feel this lends itself to an easy j...

Don't know who said it, but this: "You're wrapped up in this lame Puritan view that redemption only comes from labor."
I think it came from one of the many, many, many threads on the right and wrong ways to burn.

Drama versus crankiness and grumpiness
I am interested in hearing from others about drama. How do you recognize or define it? To me, crankiness and grumpiness can be worked through and solved, sometimes relatively easily (e.g., drink some water, take a break, acknowledgment of the emotion, engagement without defensiveness, etc.). Drama i...

So someone disagrees with your discussion point and now you feel you've been labeled a bad burner who can't freely post for fear of snark-back? That's your own thing. Truly. Re: Artists that changed your life
For me, it was Joseph Beuys. I remember a lengthy front-page article on him in the New York Times Arts and Leisure section back in the early 1970s. I was very young and was blown away by his life story and the notion of conceptual performance art. Like, "That can be art?" And it could. And his work ...

Go to the library immediately and check out "The Cornbread Gospels" by Crescent (not her birth name) Dragonwagon. It's the definite book on cornbread, packed with history, scholarship, and recipes. Make as many cornbread variations as call to you. Host potlucks and get invited to potlucks. Bring cor...
