Re: Good Advice for Virgin Burners

Just sent this out to the n00bs in my camp...... I’m not your mama, I’m a Burning consultant. And although you Birgins (Burner Virgins) have probably gotten plenty of advice I’m gonna hit you with the MOST important stuff: tl:dr: chill the fuck out and be a little prepared. 1. HWY 80 HAS LANE CLOSUR...

Re: How to shower at Burning Man with the wind???

First year I designed a simple shower enclosure. The wind made a mess of it. I was camped one protective RV width from the road that ran near Arctica. As the wind blew, an art car stopped on the other side of the "protective" RV and I just waved, nakedly at the people dancing on the top level who ha...

Re: Fantastic Way to Seal Mesh Tent Screens

I machine- sewed old sheets over the outside of the large mesh ceiling vents of my large tent. The sewing took a couple of weekends because manipulating a large tent through a regular non-commercial sewing machine is a pain but very doable. The only dust we had was from entry and exit during dust st...

Cheap golf cart tires found!

I found a place online that was selling USED golf cart tires for $20. Said they were in very good shape. Since my cart is a late 60s model and needed a new tire, I figured, what the heck. Well, they just got delivered and they weren't kidding about 'very good shape.' They look like new. I'm amazed. ...

Re: Fabric covered vehicles

Make sure the material is pulled nice and tight, and use marbles instead of grommets. No holes, no sharp edges. How would I use marbles? ( tried a search but search engines suck at the diff between slabs of marble and round marbles) Edited two secs after post: Oh,wait! With a loop around the fabric...

Re: Fabric covered vehicles

Thanks, everyone. I feel stupid in not considering flammability. Last year I ran up against the base visibility problem (yeah, it made a nice way of locating camp when DMV passed on licensing us), so I'm very cognizant of changing the base shape and making sure wheels in particular are invisible. Ju...

Fabric covered vehicles

Yes, ideally I'd do a welded, all metal vehicle, but that isn't in the cards this year. this year I'm doing a wire sculpture covered in fabric. (yeah, I'm all designed, submitted and conditionally approved by DMV.). The fabric I'm using is a stretch fabric that is not completely opaque and I'm a lit...

Re: My packing list. Am I missing anything?

One more thought: sleep mask. It can help if you are light sensitive. It's dry enough that I just use a little powder to avoid thigh rash. If you're sensitive to the heat, get a scarf and a small handful of pearllite (the stuff that holds water in your potted plants). Sew the pearllite into your sca...

Re: Did you get a STEP Ticket?

Monday I got my STEP email. :D I had a 12:10 email time. Yeah, I've read the discussion above about the times being relatively meaningless, but seeing people get tickets through STEP and seeing their times kept my spirit up. I came THIS CLOSE to putting my art car base up for sale. Now I'm rushing a...

Re: The stony silence of the BORG

I think it's all comes down to passion and commitment. What keeps the current employees at work isn't the money, it's passion and commitment to the ideas behind Burning Man. Can you be an MBA and have passion and commitment? Just look at the annual census. There's plenty of education on the playa. I...

Re: The stony silence of the BORG

When all LLC decisions are made on a consensus basis (i.e. everybody has to agree), decisions take time. This isn't meant as a defense, just a little illumination. As for my opinion: communication has NEVER been their strength. You can tell that by the website. News updates should be right upfront o...

Re: International question

In 2007 & 2008, the census showed 15% (+/- 1%) of people who answered the census were not eligible to vote in the us. So somewhere below that would be the international population...assuming you can extrapolate from the census data.
