Re: Interest? Bike to the Burn
Yea, not so much Eric: Scrutiny : noun Critical observation or examination I like how you only chose one of the two important words (and a definition that uses "critical" instead of "close"), the one that you could twist into something closer to what you wanted it to mean, when what that sentence a...

Re: Interest? Bike to the Burn
I have one suggestion already for a bicycle repair zone. This makes some sense, but its also one of those things that's already done. Cycle repair may become so ubiquitous that you'll be able to get your breaks adjusted next to every bar if we're not careful. As Trilobyte said, that would belong in...

Re: Interest? Bike to the Burn
MyLarry and I were following a girl on a bike back to her camp to help her unlock her car (she'd locked her keys in upon arrival and was in tears out on the Esplanade looking for help). We stopped at the Trailblazer to pick up the jimmy set, while we were stopped, Larry adjusted her bike for her. I...

Re: Interest? Bike to the Burn
Update I have updated this thread moving discussion and organization of the camp away from this horribly mangled thread. To be clear, this new thread is being posted to seek out other burners who happen to share an interest in self-support bicycle touring. It is not a place for discussion of your o...

Self-Supported Cycle Tourists Camp
Self-Supported Cycle Tourists Camp (needs a better name) The Idea Self supported bicycle tourists already have an active community of radically self reliant travelers. Why not bring our know how to the playa. The idea is to organize a camp focused around our particular love of cycling and the do it ...

Re: Interest? Bike to the Burn
Spent some time reading and thinking in particular about the response I hoped for and the response I received here on ePlaya to my proposal about a cycle touring theme camp. A quote from Ngulchu Thogme came to mind: If someone cuts off your head, even when you have not done the slightest thing wrong...

Re: Interest? Bike to the Burn
So uh.. when were you guys planning on doing this? Fuck you JS! Notice something, all those arms and legs flying somewhere are attached to people. Re: Interest? Bike to the Burn
Every year, one more person with the grand idea to bike to the burn. The idea usually involves someone in a motor vehicle hauling in all the necessary "self-reliance" stuff so that the cyclist can be free to pedal his or her way to the burn. It's like a safari where "bwana" has his camp hauled arou...

Re: Interest? Bike to the Burn
Seeing as how I've ridden Jungo road before, I would suggest you go out there sometime before the burn and try to ride that road on your bike. It's not going to be easy on you or your bike/trailer/kidneys. I'm not saying it's impossible but it's likely MUCH harder that you think. Thanks TT120, I ha...

Re: Interest? Bike to the Burn
so you post a thread suggesting biking to the burn. immediately expeirenced burners say not to, and why not. Your response is to argue and call them cagers or worse. Let me say, these guys have seen the results of stupidity on 447 and entrance to the playa as have I, so they aren't being anti-bike ...

Re: E-Playa Bicycle Fleet?
Finally, pedals.... The plastic ones made these days are truly crappy. So keep an eye out for old bicycles with steel pedals. These pedals have rubber to step on, but the frame of the pedal is steel. And they have proper ball bearings. I sometimes pick up a junk ten-speed just for the pedals. To re...

You're right, we can't dictate your mode of transportation, just give you advice. Since you seem too arrogant to listen to it, just please tell us what day you intend to do this. I want to avoid your bunch of bikes for my own protection. I know you are taking the risk of your own life, but (g*d for...

Re: Interest? Bike to the Burn
Seriously folks, Stop saying "I told you so", stop pointing out how it can be dangerous to ride a bike. I originally intended this as a post to see if there was any interest in a theme camp of cyclists. Specifically cyclists that enjoy long distance, self-supported touring. Yes, I know cars have con...

Re: Interest? Bike to the Burn
What is your plan?? Everyone needs at least 1.5 gallons of water per day they are on the playa. A gallon of water weighs 8.35 lbs so that is a weight premium of 12.5 lbs of water per day. So for 7 days it would be 87.5 lbs alone... plus camping gear, clothing, food, etc. Ten people is the target, 2...

I hate to say it, but that reply was 110% stereotypical obnoxious bicyclist-with-a-chip-on-the-shoulder. This isn't a big bad car vs. poor cyclist thing, this is a logical safety issue. Props to Elliot for explaining it in a clear, concise manner. Yes props to Elliot, he's been sticking to bike mod...

Re: Interest? Bike to the Burn
Wow Junglesmacks, What a car centric view. I mean all those people touring all over the world on roads packed with cars being driven by tired, strung out drivers must also be risking life and limb. Shit man, everyone should get a car. And when I say car, what I actually mean is a big fucking SUV, be...

Interest? Bike to the Burn
I missed 2012 and it was a shame. I've resolved to not miss 2013, especially for the same reason as last year. So here is the idea. Next summer I will spend as much time as I can muster back in the saddle of a bike. This is primarily because I love to ride bikes, but secondarily because I now have a...

Re: AUX/House VW Power System
The wire listed is more costly than needed, though it won't hurt anything. I'm not familiar with Blue Sea. I've used Marinco 12 v outlets. Bear in mind that the alternators listed are rated at certain rpms only, probably 3500 or higher. Alternators are available with high idle ratings, up to 300 am...

Re: AUX/House VW Power System
Guess I should probably point out the vehicle that this system is being integrated with is a 1983 VW Vanagon with a 1.9l NA Diesel engine and a few other (minor) modifications.
You can read about it here if you're interested.

Re: AUX/House VW Power System
Thanks EspressoDude, I'm currently running a Bosch 60 amp alternator which feeds the AUX system only after the starter is topped via an IBS battery tender and relay . Howdy Folks, I've been trying to get on top of my AUX electrical system recently and could use some help from folks who have more experience and perhaps know how in this area. Acceptance has kept me sane for more than a month now. I haven't worried about tickets or going since the whole ticket problem started and not getting into STEP was only a mild irritant which lasted minutes. Yes, acceptance and a couple of margaritas made all the difference. Even better, today, via ...
