Re: Do the math: over 50% of tickets went to scalpers

<--my brain is liking what this guy says Sadly, my experience of citizen-speculator-types is from Reno where BM is constantly in the news as a hometown event. If others elsewhere are not seeing the same thing, it may just be a localized condition, which would not play a large role in bringing ticke...

Re: Who plans on submitting tickets into STEP program?

I think BMorg forgot that newbies still live in the default world, not the burner community. Burner rules don't yet apply, default profit motive probably does. How many times have I heard "$1600 BM tickets on Craigslist" from non-burners? All of them. Every time. $1600 is a meme now. I think I need...

Re: Do the math: over 50% of tickets went to scalpers

Well that's that then. Burning Man 2012 will be "The Year of the Fiasco": where the ethos of non-identity tickets met the professional scalpers and burners lost their shirts and many old theme camps shrank and folded. Or as I said yesterday, BMorg tried to invent a wheel that was even better than th...

Re: Do the math: over 50% of tickets went to scalpers

Let's see BM grows less than 10,000 people a year, even shrinking one year, but when a Lottery is announced against a backdrop of last year's network news about $1600 tickets on Craigslist, we suddenly jump from 54k to 133k ticket requests. Oh I want to believe it is the message of Burning love and ...

STEP Succeeds or Fails Based on Perceptions

If the market perception is that 133,333 people want to go and only 40,000 got tickets, the scalper market will demand gold, up until the truth comes out and there is a crash (we should know how a speculative bubble works by now.) If the market perception is that half the tickets got sold to scalper...

Re: Do the math: over 50% of tickets went to scalpers

I think KestrelSF got the numbers and the problems spot on in his post above: * Burners got 30% of the tickets they wanted. * Scalpers and hoarders got 50% * Newbies account for the rest. When the glut of tickets from scalpers and hoarders come to market the prices will come down and most people wil...

SAVE THE THEME CAMPS AND ART PROJECTS

BMorg, please save the major contributors with an application process from proven teams before the last 10,000 tickets go to 7,000 more scalpers. The results show old time burners getting about 30% success, and a massive 70% failure to get tickets. This will devastate the "plan ahead crowd" - theme ...

Re: Who plans on submitting tickets into STEP program?

True burners know way too many people without a ticket to put them back into a generic STEP when they can make friends overjoyed. The newbie and the one-week-a-year-burner will be (more than) tempted to sell at a profit, and surely not pay a "restocking fee" (WTF BMorg!). What does that leave for ST...

Re: Burning Man 2012 Tickets FAQ

The trains, at say $100 a roundtrip ticket and $350 for additional BM tickets, a gross revenue for 10,000 people of $4.5 million. That means there could be money to lease land from the RR and build a simple station east of Gerlach as well as running the chartered trains. A parallel "spur" track, fen...

Re: Burning Man 2012 Tickets FAQ

What I think we really need is some kind of 'burner pick & shovel summer camp' - we'll widen that road ourselves, dammit! It might take a couple summers, but would be worth the collective effort to be able to change the game so we're not bumping our heads on a BLM cap every year. Every year I see f...

Re: Burning Man 2012 Tickets FAQ

Elsewhere was a great idea of keeping the early access to STEP limited to 'lottery losers' for a period of time. This is a similar idea. A SECOND CHANCE LOTTERY! * BMorg announces to all lottery winners they have one week to decline/cancel any over-purchased tickets for a full refund so BMorg can re...
