Re: wind generator

A car alternator is the first thing that all of us try on the journey to wind power, and it is usually a short stop, because a car alternator wants higher RPMs than you're likely to sustain for any length of time. A low-speed, high voltage motor out of an old tape drive is about the best thing you'l...

Re: Tracking solar concentrator from scrap.

solarflower, The Lustrous Industrious camp has a number of renewable energy projects under construction. We've been contemplating a solar concentrator for a small Stirling engine. We'll take a look at this and see if it lines up with the Stirling project. Thanks for bringing this up again, and pleas...

Re: 2013 TICKET SOLUTION

First, welcome to the board. I hope it proves helpful and informative. Ok, I know, I know, the regular ticket program is announced Jan 4, but what was the program for 2011 as far as how many tickets any one person can buy. We are impatient as we plan for this, and we need tickets for our whole crew ...

Re: 2013 Theme - Cargo Cult - thoughts?

Seems like a number of the people on the website actually get it. I wonder how many other people will realize that we burners ARE the cargo cult. When BM started, with influences from Cacophony Society, zone trips, etc. it was just an attempt to be alive. There was no dogma, no 10 principles, just a...

Biggest catastrophe: Letting someone else drive early in the trip. Because our camp was decimated by the ticket situation last year, we'd been building solar arrays, refining fuel (I built a micro fuel refinery with which we make enough fuel from waste motor oil -not vegetable oil- to power the whol...

I'm calling it tiers, $350 in the cheapest tier, and the majority going for $500. Part of me celebrates that tickets have shipped. Part of me wonders how we got here--we used to celebrate when we bought the ticket, or when we arrived at the playa, and the ticket process producing the desired outcome was a given. Now we're jumping up and down like we've received mana from heaven w...

Nerp, tickets are freeing up and will continue to do so. The longer you are willing to wait, the easier it will be to get a ticket at face value. A friend of mine just got her two tickets awarded through STEP. It's late enough in the game that she's like "fuckit, I made plans for Scotland instead", ...

It seems like many can agree that non-transferable or STEP-transferable tickets would have been a better solution to the new ticket-demand situation than a lottery. However the OP blaming it on BMorg's greed seems totally irrelevant to me. It wasn't greed, it was A)increase demand and B)craptacular ...

Despite the Colorado burn ban (lots of forest fires in CO right now) Apogaea was groovy this year. I kept hearing phrases like "regionals are the new Burning Man". I'm not sure I'd go that far, but there was roughly twice the art this year at Apogaea, much more ambitious than previous years, because...

Re: MV Registration...Up, Down, the Same as 2011?

What will be most interesting to me is the ratio of invitations extended compared to those that actually show up on the playa. With ticket issues this year, I expect unusual attrition. We dropped 2 out of 3 art car projects so that we could make sure that the one was bangin' despite the short staff....

We have RV's from Denver/Ft Collins, CO to BRC

The ticket situation has opened up some seats in our caravan. We have multiple RV's headed out from Denver and Fort Collins areas, with reasonable storage capacity and a good crew. We're looking to share fuel expenses to and from the burn. We'll be towing art cars/theme camp stuff, but with enough d...

Re: Trucking options from Oakland

Often trucking companies will charge loading and unloading time not because the driver had to load it, but because the shipper took too long to load it. I used to run flatbeds and we avoided do-it-your-selfers who didn't have forklifts, etc. Keep in mind that we could generally load a 53' trailer wi...

Seems like you're at the juncture where you must a) let the situation go, accepting that they just don't get burner philosophy because they have never been or b) let the whole relationship go because their values are so inconsistent with your own. I'll be interested to see which route you choose.

Some box vans have bench seats for 3 up front... I've seen people pack 4 in but it's going to get pretty uncomfortable in the 300km to the playa. Also, there are only seat-belts for 3. Don't wreck. :-)

Re: Advice on renting a trailer

Uhaul rents small enclosed trailers. This starts to get complicated, though: The SUV you rent probably won't be equipped with a hitch. You need to make sure it has a hitch receiver or a bumper hitch ball to hook it up. Then there's getting the lights to work (Uhaul uses a 4-pin flat wiring connector...
