97 was one of my favorite years. Burning Man was still small. What would be completely ignored today was big then. Anyway I digress. What made 97 unique and memorable for me was the fact that you could go swimming over at the hot springs during the day. I remember thinking, how odd it was to be at B...

I didn't experience what I was fearing regarding cell phones. I thought I'd be hearing people on the phone in the port-a-potties, or in lines for the portapotties, or walking down the streets. (side note, I got about a 50% hello response when walking aorund... that makes me a little sad.) I guess i...

Ok, tuned in for the webcast burn, and must say "Wow!" that totally blew. The webcast itself was very nice, in that the stream was very clean and not very choppy like years past. What blows is the stupid, lets jump the shark one more time commentary from guys in "The studio". What was missing was th...

If you are going to use a tent (which I always do), just accept that you are going to have to become one with the dust. That's the way it is. To quote the collective "Resistance is futile" If you got medium to big tent plans, please stake that thing down!!! With rebar, not those little cheapy stakes...

It's not so hard, but may require you to bring a gun to BM. I know, I know guns are not allowed at burning man. Just another thing wrong with BM I tell ya. Step 1: Once you are out of Reno, turn off your car's air conditioning and/or fan. Leave the windows up the entire way to BM. Never, as in NEVER...

I say leave the Sat phone at home, more we keep the default world out of BM the better! Here's a great idea that someone needs to do, make a bunch (enough for everyone at BM, I suspect the numbers will be down this year with the economy and all) of Shwag bags for people to carry their gifts in. Must...

Hi, we went the same route initially, first the sledge hammer, then the vice and ultimately the press. The sledge hammer was not very accurate and the vice route was equally hard, mostly on the body. I suggest you get the press, sell it when done. If you get the press, make a little guide for the po...

I brought my dog to the first few burns I attended(96-98). Though he was having enormous amounts of fun during the day with the endless amounts of stick throwers available, at night with all the lights and noises etc., he was not quite as happy. For me, the stress of leaving him at camp, wondering i...

Gag! (to use a pun) And yet another rule. Curious, since I haven't received my ticket yet, does it even have the words "Dangerous" in the disclaimer anymore? Is Burning Man considered a Safe and Sane, event now adays? What's next? Sex, Nudity? Large wood structures? Freaks? We all need to stand up a...

The spiritual people are going to ruin this event , I tell ya. The temple burn jumped the shark years ago, once the "Sit the Fuck down!!" types showed up. I think to prevent from getting the Shwag label, make sure that you don't just pass out to any ol Burningman attendee. This isn't marti gras. I find that the only gifts that mean anything to me are the ones that I get after I've met somone, we've talked or had some sort of connection in the Burningm...

Was 1996, on the night of the burn, I had no idea what to expect. There we were all of the attendees standing in one big giant single row around the man, yes single row, can you imagine that?! All of a sudden Larry Harvey steps up and says "Who wants to light the man?" I raise my arm and he says "Co...

what a great position to be in, as others say read the survival guide. Don't worry about having a camp to be in. Use this year to explore and make friends. Camping with a bunch of friends is great but really does not make for that much of benefit. Believe me you might save alot headaches by not bein...

Simple answer is, you don't keep dust out of your tent. Or your car air conditioning, or your.... so on time 1 million. If you get a fancy tent, for the rest of it's days it will have dust from the playa in it. Thats the facts. Learn to love the dust, and then and only then you and Burning Man can b...

Great tip with the balloon tops, but I beg to differ about: Our first dome died a very unhappy death 2 days in, in 2000. Why? Parachute. I'm guessing it died because of too weak a structure. Thicker struts or higher frequency probably would have saved the dome. I like things strong, not just barley...

Our first dome died a very unhappy death 2 days in, in 2000. Why? Parachute. Dome 2.0 we decided to use a new fabric, this time a hot air balloon top. This worked very well. We cut half moon air flaps every where and in general we survived very nicely. We combined that with a material called Botex, ...

We've given up on the air mattress thing and get a futon for free off of craigslist each year now. Trick is to roll up the futon like a big Ho Ho. Bungey it, so it'll stay rolled up, then wrap in garbage bags, and duct tape. Very easy to move around once rolled up. Much more comfortable that an air ...
