Re: "New" shade structure material
The stuff does not rip, its essentially a white poly tarp with a reflective coating on one side. Noise wise, it was noisy in the wind if it was loose. again , essentially the same as a poly tarp. I had 4 years of use for my attic foil covers. While still reflective overall, a lot of light comes thro...

Re: Water table depth at BRC ?
Every Dpw shade structure is built with 4x4s and augered holes. Hundreds of holes and trenches are dug every year. They are allowed, provided they are done correctly. I am trying to do rudimentary structural calculations for a submission for very large art project for to be proposed for 2019, augurs...

Water table depth at BRC ?
I know this may sound odd, but I was trying to figure out the "typical" average depth of the water table in late August on the playa. Given that the playa is a lake in the winter, and by the Burning man event the surface is rock hard, Is the water table in the hundreds of feet, or tens of feet, or e...

I always prefer "au natural" but its not always convenient or even welcome to others at BM BUTT... over the last few years, I have had nothing but praise for traipsing around in cute undies (from the boys and the girls) . It is a perfect solution for warm weather, and if cold, you can throw pants on...

I suggest you consider "Buy vs Make", as you will spend many many an hour developing code that others have labored over and refined...What do you consider your time worth? A growing number of people on the Playa use the "LED Lab" application by Christopher schardt. It is the software he uses to cont...

Re: "New" shade structure material
Hi all, Just to give everyone an update as to how attic foil has held up on my yurt... I did indeed re-use the same attic foil cover for my "jiffy-pop popcorn" Yurt for a second year. Absolutely no problems and it did not bother me that there were some light leaks. It did not seem to affect the mate...

Re: Accept me for who I am
I have to agree with gaminwench, bring your spouse if you can. It is likely to precipitate some discussion, and might be a litmus test for the relationship in general. I hope it helps her understand your desire to be there. My own story is that I brought my first wife with me in 2006. It did however...

Got camp? Join 'Often Naked Orphan Camp'
This year, camp plans have blown up at the 11th hour. So I will do my own! I have basic shade and kitchen infrastructure, Let's do an orphan camp! There will be no camp dues and this will not be an organized camp, more just a convivial , but independent collection of people sharing a common kitchen ...

Re: "New" shade structure material
Hi, Just to refresh this thread a little... I built a cover for my traditional wooden yurt using this material. My camp mates affectionately called it the "jiffy Pop popcorn yurt" . The entire thing was cut out and then taped together with filament tape. For areas where I wanted to reinforce the edg...

My yurt will be on the "B" side of the street, it looks like this... yurt with cover sm.jpeg Come find me if ya need the ...

Re: Attic barrier/ Insulation
For me, the sole job of the attic foil is to reflect the daytime sun. Good point about reduction of efficiency due to crinkles and dust, I will keep that in mind. My yurt cover choice was either a vinyl billboard or attic foil. I decided i had a marginally better chance of coolness with the attic fo...

Re: Attic barrier/ Insulation
I am using atticfoil this year as the covering for my Yurt. Here is a photo of the Yurt while i was "fitting" the cover. I used bifiliment tape on the inside and foil tape on the outside. I used 1 inch webbing on the edges, and added grommets. I will report back on performance of the materiel after ...

Re: Securing Shade Structure, Among Other Questions
Glad the info was helpful. Hey, just in case the PVC does not work out, I will go ahead and throw 3 extra 8ft 2x4's into the truck. If you find you need them, come find me at my camp. It's called Firmament. We are a placed at 7:15, and will have the entire strip between the A and B streets. Look at ...

Re: Securing Shade Structure, Among Other Questions
Hi, I have built a few different tensegrisity structures over the years. Last year I did a 20 ft tensegrity shade structure with aluminet top. I used 6 - 8 ft - 2x2 inverted "v"'s. They were ultimately a bit light so I would be concerned about your choice of PVC pipes, they may be too flexible, mayb...

Re: "New" shade structure material
Hi, After visiting your very successful monkey huts last year, I decided to use atticfoil for my Yurt covering. I have a 16 foot yurt that will be placed around 7:15 between A and B, (Firmament camp). I am using the attic foil for the both the top and side coverings. I will post photos once i have t...

Re: "New" shade structure material
I spent a couple of afternoons in these delightfully cool "hunky mutts". most of our camp (lamby camp) hunkered down in them during some of the sandstorms last year. I can attest to their functional coolness. thanks for posting, it's a great reminder of a very effective product and some very fun and...

Ligthing your Art is a good thing!
Hi There, Last year my burning man project was to help "The Artery" light up art installations that were not safely lit. I built a modified, smaller, verssion of this last year and it handled all the water from coco velvet and the adjacent camp... I used a 2x3 cement mixing tray, a sump pump, hardware cloth, a deep cell battery which we never needed to recharge and misc bits... easy to build and it really works great....

Billboard vinyl as a covering - my experiences in 2005
I used a vinyl billboard as a covering form my PVC hoop "Quonsett hut" this year. It is good stuff but it is HEAVY. a "standard" sized billboard is 14x48 feet and weighs about 75 pounds. Nice thing about it though is that it does not flap around in the wind like lighter materials. It's rugged but de...

Last Year, Almost every piece of lumber I used for my BM project came from wood reclaimed from building sites. we used over 20 full sheets of plywood and lots of other heavy timber. A really good supply of plywood is from concrete form work of big buildings. They use it once, then chuck it. If the bu...

Yeah the relief agencies always prefer the cash. Truly, I know that there are very good reasons for that. However I also know that typically less than 50 % of any donation actually arrives to the needed location. Then when it gets there, it is subject to whatever local barriers that exist (i.e. corr...

So I was thinking about the fact that we have hundreds of thousands, maybe a million displaced souls in Asia. Sending off a donation to your disaster relief fund of choice is all fine and good, but I like the direct action approach. We burners have a pretty dang good supply of quick, cheap, easy to ...
