Re: Where to buy rebars in LA?

FYI the Home Despot store sells straight rebar pieces, not candy-canes
At least in my experience. If you're shopping for candy cane pieces there are a few sellers on that Rainforest or E-auction site, search for "J Deer Stakes" and get 18" pieces for structures, or 12" for small tents are OK.

Re: Yet another post about PVC pipe

Yeah I just meant there's still enough time to order parts and get everything you need in the next 2 weeks. ( Vs some other structures that require a lot of pre work and construction at home ). The emt structure may require cutting poles and attaching to the playa is important, vtho so you may want ...

1 inch emt shade structure. Playa tested, easy for beginners and very versatile. You can do one in 2 weeks of you order the parts now.

Re: cooling your tent or van

Cousin Vinny, you can wire the fan and pump direct to the battery terminals, you don't need an inverter for the swamp cooler. If all you did was put the fan wires on the battery, and it fried, something is broken and you should return the fan under warranty because that should have worked. If you pu...

Yes, done it, it works fine. The shade cloth cuts down on the wind and dust gusts somewhat and side shade is nice.

Re: cooling your tent or van

Metalhead, Here's my setup for a trailer/RV with the swamp cooler: I pop out one glass window pane from the bed area. I cut an RMAX foam panel to fit into the window frame and wedge the foam panel in. Cut a circular hole in the foam to match the duct from the swamp cooler. I have to put the swamp co...

I had terrible luck with bilge pumps:, shoreline, attwood, rule, any of the little 12v canister-style pumps---they all crapped out as soon as I got to Reno, it seems. Avoid.

Re: Lag screws vs everything else...

Can anyone speak to personal experience with the more "Budget" friendly impact drivers for lagbolts *on playa*? Such as the $60 or less Ryobi, Black and Decker, or Harbor Fright drivers? Trying to keep a lid on expenses, as much as I'd love a fancy premium brand toolkit, can't justify it this year. ...

Re: Lag screws vs everything else...

Pedro, it doesn't matter how many or how long the lags are that you put thru the Foot Plate of your EMT structure. All that does is hold the footplate to the playa--the leg poles still try to wiggle out of the footplate and go flying away. (The only thing keeping the leg pole in the footplate is a s...

Re: Dry Ice in a FigJam?

Let's not. Dry ice has to offgas and some CO2 will escape even if it's wrapped in plastic. Otherwise the plastic wrap will swell until it bursts. The bucket cooler would suck CO2 gas and inject it into someone's tent or structure where they are likely sleeping. The nap would start off great, but cou...

I like the 18" stakes just like that, they are cheaper on that Eb*'/ auction site, search : 18 j hook deer fencing.
(I don't work for them their prices are just better) :)

Hi, yes in theory that would work, I wonder about the strength of the ring welded to the rebar tho. Also the pointy part left exposed is a trip or foot impaler, please bring a safety cap for them. I like candy-cane rebar (also available for sale online if you don't want to bend your own), others lik...

Re: Fixing/replacing Bottom bracket on huffy Cranbrook bike?

I've only done a bottom bracket fix/replace once and it was challenging and required special bike tools. I'm handy too and I got it done, but it's not something I would want to do on playa (alone). There are some bike repair campers on here and if you could get some help that would be ideal, maybe y...

Hmmmm, an EMT 10footer is about 10 bucks. PVC 10 footer is about 5 bucks. Are you really saving the bank by swapping for PVC? Also the outer diameter of a steel pipe is not the same size as a PVC pipe, so the connectors won't match up. https://flexpvc.com/Reference/PVCPipeSize.shtml https://steeltub...

D3: there is a fix if your blue cylinder is too short. Make a cylinder out of chicken wire around your existing blue-pad cylinder. This way, the chicken wire will stand on the bottom of the bucket, but you can adjust the height of the blue pad by pulling it up and out an inch or so, to make a good s...

Re: Parachute shade structure Q's

The conduit structures are infinitely customizable, that's why they are really quite good. If you did a 10 x 30 foot structure you could fit 2 tents and a courtyard between them as a patio, and be pretty good for simple/cheap. Just modify the plans to add 10 extra feet and a longer tarp.

Re: Monkey Hut vs Carport vs Other Shade Over Van??

Have you thought about the steel EMT structures? They are easy and can be customized to your vehicle size. My campmates park their cargo van under a EMT shade structure at an angle, so the van door opens into a nice shaded "patio" with a sidewall for dust and wind protection, pretty sweet setup. Che...

Chicky, you're getting accurate feedback and parachutes are very hot and not ideal. The EMT conduit structure is an easy, efficient shelter that's good for a beginner, and you can customize it as you advance. See the other forums here and/or pm me if you want some plans. Good

If you get 3 10x20 tarps you can cover your 20x30, and it also gives you future options for different configurations. I like a white roof tarp--I think white actually reflects better than gray/silver but who knows? Aluminet or mesh tarps breathe better, but don't protect from rain. You just have to ...

Re: Flat Top Shade Structure Guidance + Am I Missing Anything?

You'll be in good shape w/ that setup, but consider getting a single 10x20 tarp and a second bag of bungee balls. A cheap 8x20 tarp can be a sidewall for wind/shade. Another 10x20 cheapy tarp is a good floor, tack it down w/ small stakes. It keeps the dust down and makes MOOPing easy at the end. In ...

Re: Flat Top Shade Structure Guidance + Am I Missing Anything?

LLSteph, we have used the flattop shade structure and they are great. Tips: Put a candy cane rebar at each corner and ratchet-strap from the top corner of your structure to the candy cane. Tighten up every day or so. The corner fittings of your structure probably come with an eye-bolt that you twist...
