The grips at the top end of the nail make me think that maybe they are gutter spikes. That would be where it would hold the gutter a bit. Maybe just a higher grade spike.

Yes, I think your right. The rain gutter nails are of aluminum and appear of a lighter weight. Vise grips should be able to remove it, if used on the Playa.

I believe the large nails you are talking about are for fastening rain gutters to the side of the fascia boards. They usually go all the way thru the rain gutter and then into the fascia boards about 1.5"
