Re: Tarps vs. Shade cloth for flat roof structure
I just want to co-sign the running rigging suggestion as a way to spread wind-load across tarps in these flat structures. We have the burner-built/Black Rock Hardware EMT structures and in spite of having all the bungees included, we rigged with paracord last year. Though it wasn't super windy, we c...

Re: Easy sewing for playa wears for the everyday fat girl
First, thank you thank you thank you for this thread :D My favorite playawear is pretty bras (I take/wear my 'default' world bras b/c G-cups are WAY too expensive to have multiple sets of) and a variety of skirts/sarongs/wrap pants. The pants and sarongs can be made out of just about any large piece...

Re: Black Rock Hardware Shoppe - 8:30 & Rod's Road
Hi Marc, We're the MacGyvers' Union and we'll be almost neighbors on 7:45 and Cinnamon. We're a support and social camp for fixers and handyfolk, and while we dream of eventually providing a tool shop, this year we're community building. :) We'd love to be able to list your camp as a resource for un...

Re: 7:30 Neighborhood Camps
We are the MacGyvers' Union and this will be our inaugural year on the playa as a camp. We will be providing a lounge, resources, some tools and supplies, to all member MacGyvers who sign up at Union HQ on 7:45 and Cinnamon. We're also throwing a few events including: Reality Court - Monday at 3pm -...

Re: Bike Porn!
They fold up so the longest 'bone' is parallel to the bike, so they increase the width of the bike by about a foot. They detach for shipping/days when I don't feel like dealing with them. They're based on these cosplay wings https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=62jhoXa4ckI but include modifications so th...

Re: Bike Porn!
Finally got a decent-ish picture of my bike wings in motion! They open and fold closed using braided cabling that hooks over a pipe clamp on the frame to secure them. The wing 'bones' are pvc and the surface is an iridescent fabric. This year's improvements: better angling so they don't droop as muc...

Re: Playa Project Work In Progress 2014
On a smaller scale than the above projects, but something I had to learn how to do from scratch and got a good test result on today: http://pbs.twimg.com/media/BlNTr57CYAAJhMb.jpg Duct tape rope for decorative use at the MacGyver's Union! This is a three strand twisted rope. I will probably use 5-6 ...

Re: Caravansary Outfits & Accessories
clown costumes? Are you kidding? Caravansary? Clowns? Ummm... I'm having trouble with this. Self expression --- yes. Self reliance --- yes... But Clowns? Ha! Carnies travel by caravan, and you bet there were performers on the silk road. :) Last year my outfit/costume theme was "peacock", so nothing...

Caravansary Outfits & Accessories
Let’s talk themed outfits! It’s early, but early means more time to think and brain storm and prep and cut up old things and turn them into new things! This year’s theme is pretty much suited for wearing Burner chic in general, but I always love having at least one really on-theme piece. After a bit...

Re: Comfortable Bicycle Seat... ?
I have a bike seat like HappySarah's and though I don't have titanium hips, I do have a big fat ass, and I find it super comfortable. I've also heard of people using tractor or lawn mower seats with back support, if that would be better for your situation, like these: http://www.northerntool.com/sho...

Re: Food/Drink: What worked - what didnt
What worked: Frozen, vacuum-sealed meals (pot roast, red beans & rice) Muffin-cup sized frittatas (shredded potato, wilted greens, garlic, bacon in a muffin tin, topped with beaten eggs and baked until they puff up. Then freeze in a gallon ziplock. Eat hot or cold for a quick snack) Quesadillas - my...

Re: Tent and cover tips needed, please
- I will bring my lounge chair and an extra one for y'all to come visit. (great tip, thanks!) Don't forget to stake those down, too, and on short enough chains that they aren't going to go flying into your tent. (alternately have a really good windbreak.) And, no one burns alone. :) Tell your...

Re: Yeah, You! No Hovering in the Porta Potty!!
With the "gifting" spirit at BM I don't imagine any tenders will be stepping up any time soon. There was a potty attendant at the 7:30 & C jots for one afternoon late in the week last year. He'd set up a velvet rope and was wearing a tux and after each 'guest' would go in, wipe things down, spritz ...

Re: Utility belt?
I hoop, so am not a big fan of having extras around my hips. I went with a harness/holster type. Mine is canvas, but you can make them out of basically anything: 1) create two loops to go around your arms and attach in the back with elastic (you can use belts, heavy fabric, whatever) 2) put some d-r...

Re: String wrapped hair?
Post-burn update/notes for this year: The silk ribbon worked great both as hair wraps and braiding into my hair. I did about halfway down each strand of hair and left trailing ends and loved it. I'll be doing it again with rainbow ribbons made out of recycled silk clothes, and probably adding in bea...

Re: precooking meals for reheating on playa
are the food saver bags them self ok to boil or is there a certain kind you have to buy that work? They will work as long as you don't over-fill them, make sure you get a good heat seal with your food saver, and know 'boil in bag' is a misnomer. It's more *simmer in bag until eating temperature". I...

Re: String wrapped hair?
Thanks for the tip, gaminwench! I think the silicone bands should hold their integrity, but anchoring the ribbons in the braid at the top and bottom is a brilliant idea, too.

Re: String wrapped hair?
I'm planning to do this with silk ribbon (so hopefully it will be less of a pain in the ass to get out afterwards) and silicone braid rubber bands. I'm hoping this will keep my (long, fine, curly) hair from immediately turning into dreads after about a minute of dusty wind. My biggest problem with h...
