Re: I still don't understand blue flags and placed vs. unplaced

So - that helps a lot... Just to update the picture, this is the right way to look at it? flags4.JPG If I'm driving along a road looking for an open spot, I should be looking for a spot between double flags with NO yellow flag in between them or between a double flag and the edge of the road (this w...

I still don't understand blue flags and placed vs. unplaced

Everyone says that if there are blue flags surrounding a campsite, then it's placed and you shouldn't set up camp there. Ok ... but this has always struck me as confusing. Image you have a placed camp surrounded by flags: flags1.JPG ... and an unplaced camp next door: Flags2.JPG Now imagine that nex...

Help me with this year's Playa Puzzle!

Hey all! For the past couple of years, I've been handing out a puzzle for people to solve at Burning Man. The puzzles are kind of elaborate rube-goldbergian things that have participants running all over Black Rock City to do things, participate, and collect information. Last year, there were severa...

Ha ha ha ... I started with someone else's moonshine; so, it's not THAT impressive.

Besides, I think you missed the whole point of my story up there: I watched episode 8 of Twin Peaks season 3 without Gin.

Welcome to the Black Parade? Temple flashmob?

Before I went to bed last night, I drank a homemade gin martini with a splash of lemonade. I'm not sure what made me do it, but there it was - in front of me at midnight. I had just watched the latest episode of Twin Peaks and I guess I needed a little something to settle my nerves. After the drink ...

The Rent-A-Wreck we had was an E350 - and it really was perfect for all our stuff. We had some extra crap in a couple of cars, but really, it worked out quite well. Good to know they are pretty darn reliable.

Re: BM Transport - Buying a truck?

...I ended up buying a used 14' tandem axle cargo trailer instead of a vehicle. Yeah - that would be ideal for us as well. However, no one has a vehicle rated to tow ANYTHING ... so, of course my first thought was "I need a new car -- this Jeep looks cool ... and it can TOW THINGS." But, then I flo...

Re: BM Transport - Buying a truck?

Great thoughts and suggestions folks! I especially appreciate the "what to look for" post @motskyroonmatik! While I suppose I'm worried >somewhat< about weight issues, I'm more concerned that the engine, tires, and tranny all get to the playa and off the playa in one piece and without excessive dram...

BM Transport - Buying a truck?

Our camp has some structures that take about 12-14' of horizontal or vertical space to get to BM. In years past, we've 1) Rented a U-Haul (UGH oh God no), 2) Rented an RV (Shoot me in the head), and 3) Violated our rental agreement with Rent-A-Wreck and drove a cargo van out to the Playa. Out of the...

Priority in STEP?

For those folks who were registered for the main sale and ended up not able to get tickets because they were sold out, will they be able to get priority in STEP?

"You are already registered ..." message

I tried to pre-register for the ticket sale and got the spinny thing for like 10 minutes ... then, opened another browser window, and tried again. The second time, I got a message: "You are already registered for the Individual Sale." I looked back at the original page and it was still stuck on the ...

5/8" garden hose. But I think you're overthinking. Hahahha I'm a software architect ... I *always* overthink; so, yeah ... probable dead on diagnosis. Garden hose is an AWESOME idea. This is why I'm not a structural engineer. Gimme some code and I can make it sing; gimme a broken tuba and I'll put ...

Re: Rebar stress - question for those who have tried

id imagine if i was doing a design like pictured i would tape up/cushion the edges/corners of the rebar so that it wouldnt provide a sharp stress point on the PVC. .... I like the idea - I think perhaps wrapping something cushiony around the rebar might be the right answer: Like matress foam or som...

Re: Rebar stress - question for those who have tried

In theory , you will not pull the rebar out of the ground. What a 100 MPH gust of wind will do? that is the question.... At least you're not saying I'm totally crazy ... that's good! :) It's the first year we're going to do a DIY structure, and I've been OCD about the whole thing. Thanks for the va...

1/2" rebar, 24 inches long (home depot or similar). We could probably drive it down 16-18 inches. Is there fancy math you're going to show me ? :)

Rebar stress - question for those who have tried

I have a question: Has anyone tried this - Drive a piece of rebar into the ground - Slide PVC Pipe over the rebar - Bend PVC to connect at the top of a shelter Will the resulting stress pop the bottom of the rebar out of the ground? I'm sure someone has tried and failed at this... thoughts? http://i...

Anyone else compromising your ideals?

I'm in the step program (I think... I got like 3 emails saying I was in at different times ... so I *guess* I'm in STEP. No way to verify this). I've set my email account to alert me via text, telephone, and everything short of relentlessly blinking all of the lights in my house if I receive an emai...
