Found - Invertebrate Totem / Staff

Was dropped in front of our camp. It's based on a broomstick and has two very detailed plush creatures hanging from two bamboo hoops. I think they are shrimp or lobster.

Re: A solution to suicides (at the man burns/ temple burns)

Many will agree with you but it's likely that the BLM will not. I guess discussion here is an attempt to take control of the situation and come up with a solution we can live with, before a solution is dictated to us. But then, it's not like anyone in BMORG will be reading this and using any of the ...

Re: A solution to suicides (at the man burns/ temple burns)

I think they're describing a situation where the whole man burn is surrounded by temporary chain link fencing panels. Some Perimeter crew would be stationed at several points in the fence where an easily opened gate is present; that would allow anyone inside the fence (Sandmen, fire crew) to escape ...

Re: Elliot's Naked Bicycle Service, Piano Bar, & Much More 2017

The camp has a nice peaceful barbershop feel to it. There is a bit of purposeful hum in the background with people fixing bikes, occasional piano music, good shade, kinship with others who have managed to destroy their bikes. Exchange stories with a truly random sampling of the city, as the only com...

Re: A solution to suicides (at the man burns/ temple burns)

A ring of stakes with a pair of ropes would at least be an obstacle to slow down someone running inwards. A runner has to navigate it somehow, whether trying to roll under it or climb over (or ideally, running straight into it). A rope doesn't have a limited field of vision, and can't be distracted,...

Re: A solution to suicides (at the man burns/ temple burns)

It's irresponsible to say that nothing should be done, when there are simple and effective ways to barrier the big burns without obstructing view or diminishing anyone's experience. People in this thread have said to just let it happen. I don't think that the entire community is equipped to keep an ...

Re: A solution to suicides (at the man burns/ temple burns)

I think the OP went through all the above debates internally and came to the conclusion that the BMORG will have to take some kind of preventive action in order to allow any burns to proceed next year. I would say that's a reasonable assumption. From there, why not discuss effective ways to do that....

Re: Bikes on the Playa

I've brought the same Wal-mart fat tire bike for 5 years. I have my own spare parts, easily found online. It has a three piece crank and I grease it up well...it has never had a problem and it glides like a dream on the playa through the deepest dust and roughest streets. I guess if you plan to not ...

Re: Sealed wheel bearings for Cruisers?

Given that the Yellow Bike program is using the Huffy Cranbrook, and that they keep bringing them back year after year, and that I rode a well-used Yellow Bike at the end of the week and it still wasn't screeching or hard to pedal...what magic are they doing to the Huffy Cranbrook that even the well...

Re: Who is Terbo Ted? Should workers get paid for running camps on the playa?

Plain and simple, anyone who pays any camp to provide for them rather than showing up 100% self sufficient is one of the people who screws the whole thing up. Anyone who provides for others so that they can show up unprepared is just as much of the problem. It all starts with an attractive person n...

Re: Who is Terbo Ted? Should workers get paid for running camps on the playa?

I think there is a continuum of camps with dues to camps with megadues. I'm all for any camp with dues opening their books to their campers. Exactly so. Both ends of the spectrum provide amenities for a price - it's just a matter of degree. That's oversimplifying the issue to a braindead level. Mos...

Re: Elliot's Naked Bicycle Service, Piano Bar, & Much More 2017

We dropped by your camp with a potato chip front wheel. I knew there was some trick to getting them relatively straight, but forgot what it was. No one at the front of house knew the trick, so we waited for full service repair (pointless to get on it with tools as we didn't know the trick). Once the...

Re: A solution to suicides (at the man burns/ temple burns)

I was a little disappointed that it turned into a joke. I'm not going to deny the vanishingly small possibility that someone may in a sober and reasonable frame of mind someday decide that it was time to end their life. But 100% of the people who want to run into the fire need help, not a wave goodb...

Re: eBikes and Burners who Ride them

The gas powered stand-up scooters are legal and allowed, as long as it hasn't got a seat. If it's got one, it's a motorcycle and not allowed. Rules, we already got. Enforcement, we ain't. Yup. Only saw a couple of the stand-up scooters this year. Although I have a thought....a stand up scooter stil...

Re: eBikes and Burners who Ride them

I think that there will be no response or reaction to ebikes next year. As one person who spent the least amount of time out of camp ever this year, I still saw multiple gas-powered mopeds speeding down city streets. If they can fart around with impunity I have a hard time imagining that ebikes will...

Re: eBikes and Burners who Ride them

Perhaps the BMORG will do nothing. Perhaps next year, if your ebike behavior catches the eye of law enforcement, your bike will be subject to additional scrutiny and if overpowered or if breaking the speed limit you will receive a ticket. Keep it down, folks, and always be pedaling.

Re: Anyone built a RMax-type structure on a utility trailer

There was some talk about making a hexyurt "RV" of some sort like that, but I don't think it was actually made. It sounds like a utility trailer would work fine for that as long as you can level it up and seal the bottom with something like some carpet. There might be more noise transmitt...

This is probably what they're going to end up using to surround the burns from now on...... https://www.premier-fence.com/images/2010comm_img/tempfence_comm/temp_com_01.jpg They somehow scraped up enough to surround the temple burn. At least, it looked like the temple was surrounded by fence from w...

Re: A solution to suicides (at the man burns/ temple burns)

One of the point of our comments is the current "prevention system" is already evolved over many years. As suggested above, more violent action of the guards may be a solution. Complex fence systems are less likely to work. How about (my favourite 'fence') fill up the perimeter space with...

It is no use trying to prevent any attempt, and I can only hope them who tried to prevent him and those who miss him manage. I want to disagree with this statement. But I realized I don't have enough information. Over the years, how many failed attempts have there been to run through burn perimeter...

Someone was yelling "I LOVE YOU" really loudly and repeatedly at the Temple burn, too. But I can fully believe that someone would do that without any altered state (preceded by four howl waves)

My own bearings were overpacked with grease and never got bad, but I was giving people a squirt of chain and cable lube into the bottom bracket. It's supposed to evaporate leaving a light grease and teflon particle film so hopefully doing more good than harm.

I brought 20 gallons of gas for personal use and used about 15 for air conditioning and keeping a chest freezer below zero, plus an impact wrench for lag screws and charging up some deep cycle batteries for lighting. The hexayurt lighting and accessories (exhaust fan, etc) ran on a small 30W panel +...
