Re: Not Going to Burning Man at Burning Man

The only way to guarantee having an awesome experience when you go out is to be the one causing the experience to happen. Person A: walks around, looks at art, chats a bit with people also walking around looking at art, goes to a sound camp, doesn't like the music, goes to deep playa, gets cold, wan...

Even if you select 1” emt, which is fine for 10’ lengths, 60’ x 100’ grid is ~ 200 sticks of 10’ conduit.
It's also about 2100 pounds of metal for the conduit. Then you add in all the fittings, rebar, and tarps. It's a heavy duty trailer load or half of a large rental van all by itself.

Re: Conduit. Let's come to a decision.

My main question at this point is, are approximately 20’ spans between uprights doable/feasible? We’re thinking about using 10' lengths of top rail/conduit as well as 20’ x 20’ tarps for the roof, with cross canopy fittings
Hell no.

Re: Feasibility of Window AC for RV?

You could take a window unit and build a box that fits over the roof hole and the unit hangs outside the board. Of course this is super inconvenient. You could also think outside the box and realize that for your beat up Burner van, why limit yourself to existing side panel windows? Cut a hole anywh...

Re: Biggest MOOP in the history of Burning Man

I see a lot of MVs where everyone has worked together to gift rides to as many people as possible. Specifically, clothes are bulky and take up extra room that could be used for another rider instead, so a lot of the passengers are women who have sacrificed much of their clothing for the cause.

Some might point out that Baker Beach was easy, but really...I think Burning Man only found its soul when it moved to the desert. So yes, it's supposed to be hard, and that's what drew most of us to the event. I can easily go three months in the default world without feeling angry, sad, hungry, lone...

Re: Biggest MOOP in the history of Burning Man

I'm still taken aback by the assumption that, if you disagree with the way Big Imagination handled things, you must not build or bring anything to the playa. A lot of problems these days are rooted in some groups rejecting internal criticism and trying to eject dissenters rather than to self-examine...

From what friends who were there told me, they did have periods where they had a private party or parties for donors. There were also capacity issues as it attracted a lot of people. You don't even need to rely on what friends said. Ken Feldman, the project lead, posted publicly the times that they...

Re: Biggest MOOP in the history of Burning Man

Most of the stuff at Burning Man is what happens when the preschool macaroni artist grew up and bought a welder. It's not a very high bar and nobody really wants to raise it, because fun art is better than serious art. The bars for inclusivity, self-reliance, not being a burden on the community, not...

Re: I made a Lag Bolt Hand Crank Tool!

It looks like it has more leverage than a normal speed wrench, but you probably don't need more leverage. I used a T-wrench and 30" extension this year, instead of bringing power tools. It was so easy to screw them into the playa that it was boring. A regular speed wrench would have done the trick. ...

Look up voice tech that is not cloud dependent if you choose to go down this path. Snips is an example of standalone voice AI.
I've experienced a Snips setup, it is what you want. They are designing it specifically for applications that won't or can't use a cloud-hosted service.

Re: What’s the best way to hang/suspend things inside a yurt?

A smallish enclosed trailer and something that can tow it really is the sweet spot for 2-4 people. They are cheap to rent, inexpensive to buy. If you buy one and have a place to store it, then you also have an enclosed storage space for your infrequently used gear. Hexyurts eat up a lot of space, bu...

No one seems to have a problem with boats or couches or carpets being MVs, why not planes? It's definitely harder to get any new motorized couches approved these days. But you make a good point. Regarding chain links...that's what I use. It was the easiest thing in the world and I made bin of them, more than I'll need. The chance of being first in a pulse is worth it. You get to rummage around in your bins and dig out snacks to share, and then you get to be first off the line (with much buildup and fanfare) in a snail race. We had a pair of motorcyclists believe they could split lanes THROUGH the pulse. The Ranger...

I think the biggest factor in easy Exodus, by far over anything else, is that from our spot in open camping at 5:30 and L we could see there was always a continuous stream of people leaving Burning Man starting on Thursday.

Re: 2018 Exodus / Traffic, stories

We stopped at the Pilot in Fernley, and ate cheeseburgers with fries and a small chocolate frosty. A burner in a pickup truck and trailer rolled past, and I made exaggerated fry-dunking motions. He nodded and appeared to pull over to the Wendy's. I hope he took the advice, that was heavenly.
