Re: Lag screws vs everything else...

The playa was just so flat and hard this year...it was really beautiful. Great weather too. Reminded me of 2012; super flat playa, great weather, just a couple dust-ups.

Re: Lag screws vs everything else...

Regarding chain links...that's what I use. It was the easiest thing in the world and I made bin of them, more than I'll need. I would just clamp a link sideways in a vise, then with a few strokes of a sharp hacksaw make a cut through one side of the link. Then with pliers twist the link along the ax...

Re: Lag screws vs everything else...

After-burn report! Summary: I packed light this year and didn't want to bring a generator and impact wrench, so I tried a manual solution. I used an extra-long 1/2" x 30" socket extension: really great. Made it easy to screw in the lags without hunching over each one. I'd consider using it with the ...

Re: "Burning Man's Culture is in Danger"

A lot of people don't burn at the burn. Let's say that if you did not have to worry about handling anything other than your ticket and your outfits, you didn't burn.

Re: 2018 Exodus / Traffic, stories

The chance of being first in a pulse is worth it. You get to rummage around in your bins and dig out snacks to share, and then you get to be first off the line (with much buildup and fanfare) in a snail race. We had a pair of motorcyclists believe they could split lanes THROUGH the pulse. The Ranger...

Re: 2018 Exodus / Traffic, stories

I think the biggest factor in easy Exodus, by far over anything else, is that from our spot in open camping at 5:30 and L we could see there was always a continuous stream of people leaving Burning Man starting on Thursday.

Re: 2018 Exodus / Traffic, stories

We stopped at the Pilot in Fernley, and ate cheeseburgers with fries and a small chocolate frosty. A burner in a pickup truck and trailer rolled past, and I made exaggerated fry-dunking motions. He nodded and appeared to pull over to the Wendy's. I hope he took the advice, that was heavenly.

Re: 2018 Exodus / Traffic, stories

Left camp 1PM Monday, arrived at home in Oakland at midnight. Camp to pavement was about 2 hours, pavement to Fernley was about 3 hours.

Usually budget 10 hours considering backups and refuel/rest breaks, so it wasn't unexpectedly slow.

Re: Conduit. Let's come to a decision.

I have a 1V dome (icosahedron) made from 10 foot 3/4" EMT sticks and 10 foot triangular shade sails. It's tradeoff between strength and something that is still light enough for 25 tubes to be strapped to the top of my car. I can easily agree that for a square corner structure, 3/4" would be too flim...

Re: The 5-1/2 yurt

I like it except for that roof panel. The H12 can't really be screwed up if you can successfully cut a rectangle diagonally. The plywood door panel helps with the lack of a yurt band.

I will borrow an impact driver if the opportunity arises (have loaned mine out enough times) but it sounds like my plan has a chance of working. I've removed a couple with a ratchet, but never tried the other way.

Re: Lag screws vs everything else...

Wasn't planning to go this year, but the playa reached out and waved tickets in my face. But want to go with a more minimal setup. That means no generator or impact wrench. I'm buying a large socket T-handle and a 30" extension in the hopes that I can just brawn those lag screws into the playa. Only...

Re: Almost no $425 tix posted- hmm, what are the odds?

I was on board with the concept that "presale ticket extra cost is expended once you pay to ensure you have a ticket, after that it's the same as a regular ticket and should be resold for the same as a regular ticket." I'm not so sure anymore. Right now, regular priced tickets are scarce, but the ex...

Trade: Will-Call VP for Physical VP

Hey! I have scraped together the right collection of tickets and vehicle pass, but the pass (only) is will-call. If the fear of losing your tickets and vehicle pass keeps you up at night, and you have will call tickets but a physical VP, I'd love to swap passes either in Oakland (near BART) or Missi...

Re: Thoughts on a Coleman Instant Cabin 6 Tent

I use the Instant 4 dome tent for normal camping and for a quick tent to use on the first and/or last nights at the burn, when all the heavy duty setup is packed away. They take up very little space and are some form of shelter, you can pitch it and be sleeping within 5 minutes. I wouldn't leave it ...

For the presale tickets it states some are $900 and some are $1200. I understand a ticket is a ticket and all and there are no perks. What is the difference? By that I mean how do you get one over the other. The extra money goes to support the art etc. The value you receive is the peace of mind kno...

Re: Like Access to ePLAYA? Last Best Chance To Save Net Neutrality Today!

Net Neutrality IS what we had before 2015. The rules were formalized because ISPs finally killed off most of the smaller competitors and started to do shady stuff. Let's say there's a law that says "It is illegal to bring a ravenous bear to a kindergarten." Kind of weird but no big deal. Then a grou...

Cool trucks for sure, I saw them in person. You can join their camp next year, base price starts around $10,000 and you can add on options up to around $54,000 for the deluxe experience.

Would you say pulling the battery out of the car, dragging it out to a hot desert full of corrosive dust, and running heavy loads after being wired up somehow by a neophyte counts as abuse?

That's actually a pretty impressive runtime for battery-operated AC. I can understand the attractiveness of the idea, it's just dangerous and won't work.

300 volt battery will kill you. Go get a couple deep cycle batteries and hook them up to your solar panels if you're not bringing the whole car.

Re: A solution to suicides (at the man burns/ temple burns)

Another idea: ring of rope around the burn lying on the ground. If Perimeter is going to miss someone, two of them can pull on the rope; there's a chance it would snag or trip the runner. Could be replaced with a 3 foot band of cargo netting, or have the slack rope tied to stakes at intervals so tha...

I thought it was obvious that I was lampooning the idea of the GPS tracker + network + app by repeatedly specifying that the device was attached to a steel cable with combination lock that you must loop through the frame and a wheel.

Cooler heads prevail, and unnecessary complications / overreactions are optimized out of a situation after a large multi-agency bureaucracy has had a year or so to chew on the problem? Sounds pretty likely to me!

It happened, and that's just like...a real shit-ton of paperwork, you know? So BLM will likely do (as in, tell BMORG to pay for and execute) whatever they can to ensure it won't happen next year.

Re: Preventing Bike Theft / Finding 'Lost' Bike Ideas

Sweet, we could design a custom LoRa GPS logger with flashing and audible alert, geofence feature, custom iPhone app with map of the city, a mesh network to extend range, and solar-charged lithium batteries, and it would be attached to a metal cable that goes around your bike frame and through a whe...
