Re: Using EV (car) batteries to store power on playa

Would you say pulling the battery out of the car, dragging it out to a hot desert full of corrosive dust, and running heavy loads after being wired up somehow by a neophyte counts as abuse?

Re: Using EV (car) batteries to store power on playa

That's actually a pretty impressive runtime for battery-operated AC. I can understand the attractiveness of the idea, it's just dangerous and won't work.

Re: Using EV (car) batteries to store power on playa

300 volt battery will kill you. Go get a couple deep cycle batteries and hook them up to your solar panels if you're not bringing the whole car.

The appeal of Burning Man has always been how much it sucks. We just have an steady influx of people with new, creative ways of making it suck.

Re: A solution to suicides (at the man burns/ temple burns)

Another idea: ring of rope around the burn lying on the ground. If Perimeter is going to miss someone, two of them can pull on the rope; there's a chance it would snag or trip the runner. Could be replaced with a 3 foot band of cargo netting, or have the slack rope tied to stakes at intervals so tha...

Re: Preventing Bike Theft / Finding 'Lost' Bike Ideas

I thought it was obvious that I was lampooning the idea of the GPS tracker + network + app by repeatedly specifying that the device was attached to a steel cable with combination lock that you must loop through the frame and a wheel.

Re: A solution to suicides (at the man burns/ temple burns)

Cooler heads prevail, and unnecessary complications / overreactions are optimized out of a situation after a large multi-agency bureaucracy has had a year or so to chew on the problem? Sounds pretty likely to me!

Re: 3/8"x14" lag screws for good price

It's not a huge problem, that last few inches is the only part reaches firm playa anyway.

Pull-out strength is absolutely why we use lag screws, and with just a few inches of bite about 10 inches below the surface of the playa, it's many times more secure than rebar.

Re: A solution to suicides (at the man burns/ temple burns)

It happened, and that's just like...a real shit-ton of paperwork, you know? So BLM will likely do (as in, tell BMORG to pay for and execute) whatever they can to ensure it won't happen next year.

Re: Preventing Bike Theft / Finding 'Lost' Bike Ideas

Sweet, we could design a custom LoRa GPS logger with flashing and audible alert, geofence feature, custom iPhone app with map of the city, a mesh network to extend range, and solar-charged lithium batteries, and it would be attached to a metal cable that goes around your bike frame and through a whe...

Re: Compact Drill vs. Impact Driver for Lag Screws

I've been using the same HF impact driver (1/2" corded model) for 4 years, about 20-30 16" lags depending on camp setup. If it breaks, it will happen on the playa for sure, but I'll either be able to find someone's driver to borrow or just use my socket wrench.

Re: eBikes and Burners who Ride them

I'm pretty sure the 5mph speed limit doesn't apply to human powered bikes on the playa. I wonder if it might apply to eBikes though. Maybe not, if Nevada code isn't fine-grained enough to understand the distinction.

Good advice. I got 20% of the way through building a wind powered evapotron thing this year. Ran out of time. Good thing, because there was no wind! Now I have a sealed bucket of half full of gray water that I still haven't dumped in the toilet, because it's slowly bulging out the lid and I'm scared...

Was dropped in front of our camp. It's based on a broomstick and has two very detailed plush creatures hanging from two bamboo hoops. I think they are shrimp or lobster.

Re: A solution to suicides (at the man burns/ temple burns)

Many will agree with you but it's likely that the BLM will not. I guess discussion here is an attempt to take control of the situation and come up with a solution we can live with, before a solution is dictated to us. But then, it's not like anyone in BMORG will be reading this and using any of the ...

Re: A solution to suicides (at the man burns/ temple burns)

I think they're describing a situation where the whole man burn is surrounded by temporary chain link fencing panels. Some Perimeter crew would be stationed at several points in the fence where an easily opened gate is present; that would allow anyone inside the fence (Sandmen, fire crew) to escape ...

Re: Elliot's Naked Bicycle Service, Piano Bar, & Much More 2017

The camp has a nice peaceful barbershop feel to it. There is a bit of purposeful hum in the background with people fixing bikes, occasional piano music, good shade, kinship with others who have managed to destroy their bikes. Exchange stories with a truly random sampling of the city, as the only com...

Re: A solution to suicides (at the man burns/ temple burns)

A ring of stakes with a pair of ropes would at least be an obstacle to slow down someone running inwards. A runner has to navigate it somehow, whether trying to roll under it or climb over (or ideally, running straight into it). A rope doesn't have a limited field of vision, and can't be distracted,...

Re: A solution to suicides (at the man burns/ temple burns)

I think the OP went through all the above debates internally and came to the conclusion that the BMORG will have to take some kind of preventive action in order to allow any burns to proceed next year. I would say that's a reasonable assumption. From there, why not discuss effective ways to do that....

Plain and simple, anyone who pays any camp to provide for them rather than showing up 100% self sufficient is one of the people who screws the whole thing up. Anyone who provides for others so that they can show up unprepared is just as much of the problem. It all starts with an attractive person n...

Re: Who is Terbo Ted? Should workers get paid for running camps on the playa?

I think there is a continuum of camps with dues to camps with megadues. I'm all for any camp with dues opening their books to their campers. Exactly so. Both ends of the spectrum provide amenities for a price - it's just a matter of degree. That's oversimplifying the issue to a braindead level. Mos...
