How do folks feel about keeping to the BRC speed limit of 5 mph? Or are motorized personal conveyances exempt from this?
It's a good question. I typically operate my bicycle between 10 and 20 mph when I actually get on the damn thing. Is that also bad?

Re: After action report from One Wheelers on the Playa?

torrey.smith (or anyone), Do you wear safety gear out there? Just curious. I broke my wrist riding a Onewheel, I don't go near the thing without wrist protectors on. If I am riding anywhere near max speed, then absolutely, as sudden nosedives are just killer bastards. With that said, I have owned a...

Re: After action report from One Wheelers on the Playa?

Hi all..I know this is an old thread but I just went to my first Burn this year (2018) and it was awesome! Just wondered what you did if anything to prevent it being taken (as many bikes are taken there if you don't lock them up when parking to go off dancing etc) and how you did with the range and...

East Bay Burners is hosting a free social tonight at Classic Cars West in Oakland.

I might go out dancing after that. There's an Electro Swing & Funk Dance event in SF that looks fun and a lot of my favorite people are attending.

2018, or "I, Asphalt" I was honored to be invited out early for the Galaxia build, and it was there that we started to realize that pilot holes were going to be almost universally necessary for the big PE-46 penetrators (of which Galaxia used 100!). This was an extremely humbling year for me, as th...

This is a 30 second clip of our first test! We love the new sound, but it's super quiet even putting 20,000 watts into it  If you crank the volume you can hear the music pretty well but the hum of the generator is definitely interfering. We have a few knobs to twist; we're gonna bring this ou...

Re: Lag screws vs everything else...

Are 2-3 12" 3/8 lags at the feet of each pole on a 10x20 EMT shade structure with 2 16" 1/2" lags connected to the top corners connected by ratchet straps going to be enough to keep it from flying away? Sextant had a lot of success with one or two 3/8" lags in the base last year. I think ours were ...

It varies of course. Typically between 4 and 6 ft before the chocolate pudding starts. When we do anchor pull tests we get a good read on it by seeing what comes up with the anchor. https://youtu.be/p_bHbuLeDE4 https://youtu.be/eGlyBvB4F7U Here you can see a combination of damp Playa and too-tight t...

Sextant Tesla Coil (high fidelity sound!) Fundraiser

Sextant is excited to be working on a new kind of sound with our big coil! The basic idea is using a new ultra high speed solid state switching circuit to be able to overlay lots of tiny sparks in an attempt to construct a complex sound with a sweetness to it. So, like, human voice and stuff :mrgree...

JMS, Joining a camp is NOT EASY. This is not some resort where you just show up and sign in. I know I’m going to sound harsh, but you are in over your head (based on all of your posts). You have no clue where you are going and what you have signed up for. Fly yourself out to the US. Rent a car. Fig...

Sextant is looking for people with interest in sound. We're on the verge of a breakthrough into making high fidelity sound with our giant Tesla Coil. It's currently limited to a very harsh MIDI sound, bit what comes next could be very fun with the right team. A fair number of us have been to Afrikab...

KS4RGE here. We went Ham last year to great effect. Sextant does study sessions and carpools to test locations so we can get a contingent of legal Hams in camp to run the radios between the Tower, vünderbar, zipline LZ, mobile leads, and camp command. The 888s is a remarkable option because I can pu...

Well it arrived and I'm intrigued! It's a hollow welded-up assembly of mild steel that's been galvanized, which gives it some unique properties.

I'm going to cross post to FIGJAM's main thread.

Sextant will definitely test this on our next round.

Re: Flat Top Shade Structure Guidance + Am I Missing Anything?

One thing I'd like to point out is that at Burning Man, a spacetime vortex causes the sunlight to always come in dead sideways to bypass the top and hit you right in the feels. I recommend side panels on the sunny side, and to plan your orientation appropriately. Sextant has a 40x190 ft shade struct...
