Re: Paul Addis

On second thought, after seeing a different picture of the structure in 2007 (the one I saw before was apparently wrong) I can see it was a bit more involved than just the "man." So yes, I changed my mind about it being a dumb prank. The online articles didn't explain the story very well. refreshin...

Re: Paul Addis

After reading a little more of this thread I would like to respond to the posters that comment about Mr. Addis' mental condition. Was burning the "man" early THAT radical of an act the only a "crazy" person could have conceived?? Please, you people need to get over yourselves. And as far as mental i...

Re: Paul Addis

This story really bothers me - sending someone to prison for burning a wood pile effigy of a man early??? Seriously though, shouldn't this have been a civil matter or at the worst some jail time/probation and restitution but sending someone to the pen??? The hypocrisy of the whole thing is astoundi...

Re: Clarification of Terms

Psst, BBadger buddy... you're committing the standard American act of confusing Socialism & Communism (one of my major pet peeves about our shitty education system)... Socialism is where people pay higher taxes to contribute to higher benefits for all (health, education, welfare, etc) while being a...

Re: Should Camp Finances be Public?

You should be more concerned that the price you paid was worth it to you rather than what that money was spent on, or what might have been the profit. It's like being outraged that convenient stores pay pennies on the dollar for fountain drink syrup and water. Was the price of the drink worth it to...

Re: Should Camp Finances be Public?

Awesome! Put your money where your mouth is. We'll see how your project works out. I don't have high hopes considering how these silly notions of true socialism have (not) worked in the real world. I'm thinking you'll quickly become disillusioned: trying to justify the cost of time you spend, or th...

Re: Should Camp Finances be Public?

It's amazing to me that 99% of the responses disagree with you, yet you cling to the idea that you were utterly blameless and that someone else was a "robber baron". Personally, if I get this much disagreement I might want to look deeply at what happened and see if my actions played a role in the o...

Re: Should Camp Finances be Public?

You're not so much the bad guy as the bonehead. Looking to the org to regulate tens of thousands of camps because you made a bad decision is kind of ridiculous. Even if they would and could make all camps do what you ask, who's to stop you from making bad decisions then? You don't need Burning Man ...

Re: Should Camp Finances be Public?

It sounds like this board is full of robber baron/camp minions, must be nice to be in the "in group" did your camp daddies give you extra ice cream to "cool the burn???" I'm starting my own camp next year. Like the Socialist Republic of BRC or something like that. And unlike many here I wont profite...

Re: Should Camp Finances be Public?

You and many posters on here sound like VERY selfish people. The new "ME" generation here, just as long as it's good for YOU and screw everyone else Pot, meet kettle. I think you should sue the camp for... whatever it is you can sue them for, and then sue the Org for not protecting you from the evi...

Re: Should Camp Finances be Public?

Soooo... Did your camp have a Sobe tent that I missed? was it sponsered by Costco? Did they have a Krug champagne bar? Nope. They didn't. Did you pay by the drink? Did they have you buy your apples at a commissary? Nope. You decided to pool resources with a larger camp- and got by all accounts way ...

Re: Should Camp Finances be Public?

Just out of curiosity, what were you expecting to get for your $150? $150 doesn't go anywhere near as far as you apparently think it does. I get it, you're bitter that the camp leaders spent some dough on plush accomodations, so what? Did that adversely effect your burn in any way? Sure, I'd say it...

Re: Should Camp Finances be Public?

Re: Should Camp Finances be Public?

A $150 payment does not, in any way, grant you a controlling interest in the camp and therefor....FUCK OFF.! I never said "controlling interest" ROBBER boy, but I and other members should have a right to know how dues are spent and the camp should be OBLIGATED to disclose this info. What have you g...

Re: Should Camp Finances be Public?

This makes no damn sense at all. Which camps? Mine doesn't even do dues, we're an autonomous collective with a dash of communism and a cool camp mom (at least this year). Who's "finances" are we going to disclose? What are "dues" anyway? Is it dues when each of us is told or asked to bring a specif...

Re: Should Camp Finances be Public?

Basically what needs to happen here is the Borg needs to require ALL camps fully disclose where and what camp dues were spent on. No it doesn't have to be down to the penny but at least somewhat accurate - maybe something like the afterburn report issued by BM. This may not be a popular suggestion f...

Re: Should Camp Finances be Public?

I've been biting my tongue on this subject, but I just have to finally chime in. First off, I'm damn glad dontflipmejack isn't with Barbie Death Camp. Re: Should Camp Finances be Public?

20,000 dollars is about a half-time to full-time job for one person. Not a lot of money in real terms. If you don't think that it's at least a quarter-time job to put together a camp, then you are naive. Maybe someone could post a camp budget for us, so that we at least have something before us tha...

Re: Should Camp Finances be Public?

Dontflipme: next year camp solo. See what it costs you, seriously. While I've never joined a camp with dues (and, personally, probably never will), I know what people put into it & how much things cost. My food for the week cost me about $120. It was crap food - dehydrated soups, chips & salsa, lot...

Re: Should Camp Finances be Public?

If you think your $150 bucks even paid for one trip to the gas station to haul that sound station and bar to the playa, you are sorely sorely mistaken. Everyone seems to be missing the point (on purpose perhaps?). The dues MIGHT only be $150 but we had about 120-130 campers this year (they couldn't...

Worst: Waking up Sunday to my car's quarter panel having been kicked in (with a boot print to match) sometime on Saturday night. Finding a big name (for the Playa) DJ peeing on the car before his set. I don't care how popular you are, you can fuck right off. Just when I thought i had it bad...........

Re: Should Camp Finances be Public?

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention some of the camp perks for this year. After working a full shift at the bar serving cheap @ss mccormick vodka and other cut rate liquor I was offered a pint of ben and Jerry's icecream - apparently the thoughtful camp leader and his counsel filled their freezers with B&J...

Re: Should Camp Finances be Public?

The only hypocrisy is that it takes a lot of money to do this "nonmonetary" thing in the desert. That's BMan's dirty not-so-secret. You should have seen the Reno Wal-Mart last night. Looks like your only option are (1) rideshare - even try to hitch a ride with a truck driver - I80 is a major transportation corrador (2) Greyhound, not sure about baggage but they probably travel that route

good luck
