Awesome idea.
I think you could save 70 or so dollars buying the ratchet straps at costco (nice yellow goodyear ones) and using lag bolts and chain link instead of playa staples.

Re: Lag screws vs everything else...
The difference is that you don't pay for the cut links and their footage if the store cuts them. I had to pay for all of the cut links. I wanted to complain, but then again, they did all the cutting for me. We need about 60 or so, but I only asked for 20. Figured I would make a few trips. But...

The one guy that kind of helped me, when I told him what I wanted he said he couldn't do it because he would w...

Re: Lag screws vs everything else...
Generally you buy chain from a hardware store...they'll have some 3/8" lag screws around. Went by today and got the 1/4" chain link. No one was there to cut it, so I've started with a sawzall and bolt cutters. Both ways are pretty simple. It was better than standing around waiting for someone in ho...

Re: Carport Ratchet Straps
Costco is currently carrying Goodyear 16' 1000 lb/3000 lb ratchet tiedowns. A 4-pack is less than $20. In my Costco, they were right next to the carports. Do you know the width of the strap? 1", 1.5" or 2"? ( I just googled and looks like they might be 1.5") I'll probably swing by and check them out.

Re: Building space in SF for geodesic dome construction
That's weird, we've set ours up there a few times. People use the panhandle park area to set stuff up.
Is it one of those shelter systems playa domes?

I guess thats true. I have some shorter ones laying around I could take. I guess the heads are the same size. I should have realized thatFIGJAM wrote:Then take a 3/8" bolt to the chain store.

Re: Lag screws vs everything else...
I tried searching but haven't found it.
What size chain link for the 3/8" by 14" lag screws. Want to get a head start on cutting the links before the screws arrive.

Also, are 10ft lengths long enough, or would longer be better. We are test setting it up this weekend, haven't taken it out of the box yet.

Carport Ratchet Straps
What type/rating ratchet straps is everyone using? Do the 1000lb Harbor Freight straps do a good job? Does anyone have photos of how they strap theirs down? I've found some stuff, but a lot of the advices is from 09, 10 etc. Wanted to get a newer thread going with how people are securing them today....

Don't worry about the tickets. Keep planning and preparing and you will get tickets through STEP or the last chance sale. Either way, you will find tickets for face value if you keep an eye out. Don't be afraid or overwhelmed. It is a lot to prepare and think about, but its not even march yet. You h...

We did use dry ice for the frozen food. We bought I think 40lbs on the morning we left and transported it in a cooler with frozen food in the back of a pickup truck. We kept it covered and in the shade the whole week. We bought it in San Francisco, at www.sfice.com got there 10 minutes before they o...

Awesome that you are making the trip! A lot of people say don't stress out too much if you don't get a ticket. Every year as the event gets closer, tickets become available (STEP exchange, last chance ticket sale, and people with plans that fell through). I definitely saw that last year. Obviously t...

Re: Returning for year two
As you can tell, the professor in question was not a math professor. Even more excited that its only 8 months away. This year we are considering building a dome to use as our communal space. We used two monkey huts last year, and they worked well over all. Thursday morning, one large gust of wind pu...

Returning for year two
Hey Everyone, Super excited to return this year for my 2nd burn after going for the first time in 2012. Been lurking around the boards since ticket time last year, but haven't posted too much. Hoping to change that. Last year I went with three good friends, and we camped out on 8:15 and K (the green...

Re: Southern California First Time
Last year was my first burn, went with three other friends also first timers. We researched, prepped and watched all the videos in the world. I also agree with not watching too many videos, just enough to get you excited, but nothing will be the same and its best to go in not expecting anything. We ...

We are a small group 4-5 that wanted to camp in that area. We have no generators, just a couple huts and tents. Seems like we could group together, we were planning on arriving around 630am monday morning.
