Re: My son wants an ATV

When you pick one out, ask the dealer about a beginning rider course. Adults (and children) are seriously injured or die every week in ATV/UTV accidents....just like automobiles and motorcycles.

The vehicle performance dynamics can be quite challenging to even a experienced driver.

I just bring an (rechargeable) electric razor to knock off the tall stuff. I recharge it in the few times I run my generator. I have BIC razors as backup, Get a good shave when I get home.

Re: Critters on Playa?

A couple of years ago, a kangaroo rat (apparently a stowaway in a shipping container) adopted us at ESD Camp 3. The little feller would scamper between our feet during shift briefings in the shade structure. Some kind soul eventually caught him humanely and transported him to some vegetation at the ...

Re: Rest In Peace

I hope this is my last trip to the Temple to post a memorial in my lifetime. My father, Korean War combat veteran. and 20+ year peacetime soldier, peacefully passed away this Monday morning. He was almost 90. He was in assisted living for almost two years, but suffered a rapid decline in the last 10...

It’s not the odor, it’s the constant slamming of the spring loaded doors that’s annoying as all hell.
Only for the first few days. After that most of the doors get ripped off the hinges, and the smell dissipates easily, born aloft on the gentle breeze.

Re: Ashes in Temple

In the EIS comments, the local Indian tribes objected to any human remains (including cremains) being left or interred on the playa. Sounds unenforceable to me. Just too many places to look. Use an unobtrusive container for the ashes, like a manila envelope. Don't ask, don't tell. Nobody, except you...

Re: The basic problem with modern BRC

There is a lot of "Park and Leave" parking out by the DPW fuel depot and Wet Spot at 5:30 and way the hell out there past L. I know some camps (including our ESD work camps) that direct their members to leave their cars out there after unloading since there isn't enough room to park them in camp.

Transmission indicator pointed at wrong numbers...check your motor mounts, The 454 has a lot of torque and if the motor mounts are broken, the whole engine can rotate just a bit (until the fan hits the shroud) which can move the indicator off one point. Had that in a Dodge PU with a 360, but the mot...

TSA pre check coming to a festival near you

TSA contractor signing up festival goers for PreCheck as a way to bypass security screening, both at airports, but festivals and sporting events. I wonder if those of us already in the PreChecksystem will be permitted to fast track the BLM contracted "screening" goons at Gate? Link to USA Today: Mir...

720 pages of public comments in Volume 2, many of which are virtually identical. Pages upon pages of dumpster, light pollution, and wild animal protection comments. BLM appears to have just given up replying to each, just referring the commenters over and over to a previously printed answer, many of...

I think some residents of placed theme camps or villages are reluctant to invite in outside campers, is that if these new residents leave a MOOPy mess or commit some other malfeasance, it can reflect badly upon the placed camp and jeopardize placement in future years.

I heard a rumor that a camp adjacent to an irritating PnP set up an open access node with no backhaul to the Internet and with an SSID implying it was in the PnP. The PnP was then questioned incessantly by passers by, who should not be connecting anyway, on how to connect. That would be a combinati...

Yes filing a FOIA request for all comments on the EIS is bound to make for some interesting reading. Are BLM and other Feds eligible to send in their own comments in an off-duty average citizen role? That sounds like stacking the deck to me, if so. Doesn't really matter though. BLM has already made ...

You might consider an underwater housing for any high end camera and lens. The dust out there is super invasive and a professional post-event cleaning may not get it all out. Myself, I just use a Nikon water and dust proof point and shoot and just hose it off with a little vinegar and water when I g...

Or perhaps the BMOrg subsidizes the existing solid waste transfer station near Gerlach, funding several staff positions to keep the normally closed station open on the Labor Day weekend, and renting a sufficient number of roll off dumpsters. Dumping fees would be kept low enough to encourage folks t...
