Re: Cycling TO Burning Man
As you can see from this thread, every single person with a car will try to kill you then blame you for "getting hit". It is a fact of our county that we are hell-bent on ruining the environment and any attempt to do otherwise is met with vicious aggression, so get yourself an SUV and rape the earth...

Re: Are you losing interest in Burning Man too?
Oh no worries: I'm not going unless I feel really compelled. Definitely not this year. And Re: Token, everyone has a different experience. Parties bore me to death—if Burning Man was just some big party (for me) I would have never come back. But (for me) it was a way to try new things ... to test my...

Re: Are you losing interest in Burning Man too?
Stumbled into this one with a lot of feelings about it. Cause I've gone thru that, lost my playa mojo, skipped a year here and there. Then had a couple of years where I went but I didn't participate. That was the worst and I basically built a wall around myself and didn't allow it to happen. During...

Re: STEP tickets actually directed to specific people
Ya, there is an all. All of the tickets released into the STEP are actually directed to certain people. They are not sold to any old person in the so called queue. The queue is a lie just to cover up what actually happens to the tickets. In a Schrödinger's Cat kind of way, yeah, I guess it is. At t...

Re: Let's nerd out about Blacklights
365nm lamps come with warnings that they may damage your eyes. Now, I don't know if they have this label just because the light is invisible so one may find oneself staring into the light for a while and not knowing they were exposing their retinas to high levels of incoming light (pupils will not ...

Here's a simple test before heading to Burning Man: shine the laser in both your eyes. If you're unable to drive to the event anymore, you shouldn't bring the laser.

Re: Are you losing interest in Burning Man too?
Thanks everyone for the comments. It's rather inspiring, actually. I've skipped years in the past, but this seems more permanent ... I've had moments when I felt like those non-Burners who just can't figure out "why?" at all. I have told some friends who were on the fence about Bman: if you're not f...

Put aside all the kvetching about how it was better next year and all that ... forget about ticketing and plug-and-play camps ... I'm just not that into it anymore. Maybe it was because I had a really good year that I didn't think could be topped. Or that I'm so bloated with expectations that I can'...

Re: What is the evidence for taping ALL panel edges?
I've been rereading the OP several times and I continue to feel like I'm missing something. I'm assuming you're dealing with aluminum-faced rigid foam board. The edges have exposed inner foam which is reasonably tough, but it is also easy to pick out and make little bits of mess—especially compared ...

Re: End of radical self sufficiency - shift to radical commu
We suggest practical self reliance along with radical community. This is an interesting way to formalize what I've been seeing in my own experience. Once I got over my virgin year, the "game" was: "how do I do this?" I shot for 100% self-sufficiency and largely succeeded. But that depended on a hug...

Glow-in-the-dark paint is very very dim after only 15 minutes. The "24-hour" paints are cool but only useful in pitch black.

This "going green" stuff at Burning Man is pure bullshit. You have your toys and your party, and I'll have mine. Burning Man is when I get to play with the green tech—can I do it? How much power do I really need? All that stuff ... I call it fun. Getting my hands covered in grease trying to get the...

All the artists and makers and volunteers will attend the real Burning Man—the one that happens in the week leading up to the public one—just like they always do. The only difference is in 2015, they'll pack up and leave on the first Monday of the public event rather than the last.

I gotta say I'm trying to empathize, Lonesomebri ... It must have been almost 10 years ago now that I was debating with the leader of a regional group. It had to do with the group claiming to be of pure and noble Burning Man heritage, yet complicit in the online bullying of the meek members of the c...

Re: Toward a PnP Code of Ethics and Best Practices
One thing I've noticed about the BMORG is that they have always treated Burning Man as an event that is ever-changing. And in doing so, they risk alienating people who think they Burn correctly. To be blunt, there's no such thing as "Burning correctly"—in theory the best you can do on that front is ...

Probably "Burning Man Personal Assistant" is an accurate title, leading us to "burnpa."

Re: Toward a PnP Code of Ethics and Best Practices
I think the first step—if we're going to talk plug-and-play camps is to try and define "plug-and-play" at Burning Man. As best I can tell, it's a moving target and subjectively defined. The first person to show up in a Bruise'Merica RV was probably "too plug-and-play". The first group to pool resour...

Re: Plug n plays running amuk
Rich people coming to Burning Man with plug-and-play camps all set up by a servant class are there because of one thing: they are unable to create anything themselves. They must rely on people who know how to "build, troubleshoot, and tweak" something made with their own hands. So far that's the way...

Re: After how many burns do the memories blend together?
Every year I've gone, I've done it differently. But I think that even if I tried to create exactly the same experience one year to the next, there would be no way it would be the same. So then I wonder if I can recall any experience that could have been any year. One was when I was drinking from a b...

It Still Stings camp had 55gal plastic barrels for gray water and we got them pumped out just fine. I had thought that using an RV connector would have been advantageous, but they had no problem going through the existing hole.

This is so embarrassing to admit... but I actually brought plastic bead necklaces to "gift" my first year. Basically, if this is your first burn, do not bring cheap store bought trinkety shit to give away. If you are giving something store bought away it should be something utilitarian (lip balm, l...

2013_Final_Web_SM.jpg For what it's worth, the shortest navigating path is always to cross the open Esplanade to the radial clock street nearest your destination and follow it straight to the circumferential letter street of your destination. No matter what you do, you may encounter someone who will try to shit on your parade. Glass is an awesome material. Its MOOP-potential is only if it breaks, just like blinky lights (especially cheap ones full of little plastic pieces, batteries, and ridiculously fragile construction), and PVC pipes ...
