Re: What happens when your playabike craps out on the playa?
Pretty sure I've lost all nerve endings on my backside from my regular bike, but we'll see how a week of playa dust + sun folds into this!! With normal, strenuous riding, the downward force of your legs takes much of the weight off your butt, and even a skinny saddle is comfortable. When cruising a...

Re: If you are carrying EMT anyway, check this bike rack.....
I made a couple of those last year, but beefed up: 1 1/2 horizontal, 3/4 legs. It could hold a least one person hanging in the center. If you're still concerned, cut the horizontal piece down from 10 ft to 8 ft long. To make drilling the leg holes easier, I got a coupling for each end and drilled th...

We'll be open from 9am to 1pm, with DIY tools available other hours. We could always use more help! If you know how to fix bikes (or you're mecha...

Re: Bike Porn!
I'm a big fan of polyurethane-based adhesives - much tougher thsn silicones. I used clear Shoe Goo to attach EL wire to my aluminum bike frame, and black Shoe Goo for retreading the tires (and medical grade PU adhesives in the default world). If you need a lot (which you might for the upholstery) a ...

Re: Bike Builders Unite
I use a 1/2" drive ratchet wrench about 10" long, so the torque is getting up towards that range. It just seems that if the crank has been ridden while loose and the tapered hole has gotten mushed out, no amount of torquing will keep it from eventually loosening again. BTW, I meant to say PBR (PBS i...

Re: Bike Builders Unite
I've found that wrapping a strip of soft aluminum (cut from a beer can) around the square taper before pounding on the crank will make the crank stay on for days instead of just hours. I maintain that a piece cut from a Fat Tire Ale can works best, but #1 Son insists on PBS. Go figure...

Since I’m a morning person, we’ll officially be open from around 9am until 1pm. Other hours, we’ll have tools and tubes available for...

Elliot,
Glad to hear you're going for Theme Camp status. Last year, Center Camp Info directed every ailing bike on the playa to us - we're happy to spread the joy.
Re. the original topic - my wife plays piano. We'll be sure to swing by for a shift at the keyboard.

Re: Cranky and Sons Bicycle Repair
I've always wondered why we fix so many flats, given the scarcity of thorns and broken glass on the playa. Well, I just inventoried the tub of flat tubes we hauled home from our lat burn. Maybe 20% had punctures. Half the rest had no leak at all (!) and the rest had tears at the valve stem. This see...

Cranky and Sons Bike Repair has been placed at Cinnamon and 5:15, close to where we were in 2012. (We missed the last burn because of son NotJoe's wedding.) We're officially open from first coffee until 1pm, with tools for DIY repairs other times. We’d be delighted if any free-lance bike mechanics d...

The proximity is coincidental. Our closing time was, in part, intentionally set to dovetail with the opening of Elliot's Emporium. (The other part is related to the half-life of my morning espresso...)

Another good two-minute topic would be lubricants: what you should put on your chain, where you should use WD-40, how to revive a skipping freewheel, etc.
