Fixer camps sound off 2016
Ok folks I am back with this. Last year we created a cheat sheet for all the fixer camps to let us all know where the others were and what they did. I am happy to create and distribute these again for 2016. If you are a repair/fixer/welding/etc camp and want to be part of this and get a list, sound ...

Re: Are there any portable Air conditioners that will run on a Honda 1000i
A Honda EU 1000i will probably be able to run a 5000BTU AC. However, it may not have the power to start the AC, which requires more power. I'm sure you can use your Google-Fu to search for air conditioner prices online. While AC is definitely nice, why don't you consider making an evap cooler inste...

Re: Bringing a welder to the playa.
We have brought a welders to the playa for the last 3 years, and we will be bringing 2 or 3 again this year. Flux core and or stick is the easiest to deal with in the wind and dirty conditions, but we were able to use MIG with bottle last year by bringing plywood to create a wind break. With that sa...

Gears and Beers 2016 is looking for fresh blood for the machine gods!
Gears and Beers is back for 2016 and we are looking for more mechanically talented folks to add to our menagerie. We are a camp dedicated to helping any and all the folks who have mechanical, electrical, and occasionally emotional problems on the playa as well as the proliferation of free beer. If y...

Re: G&B request for what went wrong..
I love the wooden/replacement pedal! I am going to have to steal that as well. That is a great idea. We do have a acetylene torch we bring out each year, I will play with it and see which one I like better, thanks for the suggestion. We also do have a cheap ac/dc tig rig that I am bringing out, but ...

Re: G&B request for what went wrong..
Elliot, I am glad that those sheets were useful. We will do them again this year. If we can pull the crank arm off and get it into a vise, we should be able to keep is straight. If we can repair the threads, that will be the first option. We are bringing a tig welder this year so we can braise (or w...

G&B request for what went wrong..
Good afternoon folks, Gears and Beers are heading back to the playa, and as a fixer camp, we would love to hear for anyone out there who had mechanical issue what you ran into, what you ended up needing and were you able to find it. Last year we made this call out and it was really useful for planni...

Re: Ice Maker and a Prius...?
I have actually tried this a few years ago with a bank of 4 of these. Three things you need to be aware of. 1. They have a temp sensor that gets fouled by the dust, so find that and just plan on cleaning it. It the silver tube that is connected to the board by a wire here: http://www.edgestar.com/Re...

I think we paid $75 each for our 2 3/8" 50' coils. Worth every penny so far.New 50' coils are about $100 or so, so not crazy expensive. I found several used jockey boxes on craigslist for fairly cheap, and took the coils to make a 3 tap box.

Re: Beer - Colder Than Ice....
That is what we are using at G&B for the last two years, it works great. A little pricy, but worth it. Also cooling the keg in a plastic garbage can helps a ton as well.Stainless is the way to go if you have a set-up that works & you intend to keep using it. I'm just not there yet.

Terrific idea test517! Even if my camp rides out the week intact, a neighbor's camp might not, or I can imagine perhaps some other scenario where this reference card would become really handy to have and share. Thanks! A lot better pressure than the garden sprayer. More like a shower, less like a mister. That is the problem we were trying to solve here.

My pump shower
Since I have been asked about this a few times this month and in response to the Playa shower thread, here is a quick write gallery how to for how we build our pump showers from last year. I actually stole the idea from someone else (Jethro from Camp Delicioso) and made some minor tweaks, so its fai...

Re: Gears and Beers looking for more mechanics/fixers
I'm a newbie, so please forgive me if this is a dumb question, but what's the tool situation? Would you need fixers to bring their own suite of tools? Not necessary. I am bringing a set of cheap harbor freight tools that we have been using for the last few years. If you a professional set, you will...

Re: A request from Gears and Beers
Gears and Beers, I have an Econo Tig (miller) that up until last year was my welder on playa. It's an older one (1997 or so) and it has been great. It is a little light on power to Tig Aluminum well but does great with stainless or mild steel and it is really nice to have a machine that can stick w...
