Chaffee Shuttle Art car looking for a starbase

Hi, Over the years I have seen several Star Trek shuttles and art cars on the Playa. This year I’m bringing my remake of my Type 10 shuttle “Chaffee” back to the playa and am looking for a friendly starbase to camp with. I’d also be grateful for any information on how to contact any of the other spa...

Re: Vehicle Pass Problem

If a person gets a ticket, and no V pass, what then? Will people be able to drop off their gear and then park in overflow?

Registration button just showed up. Used it and got a confirmation code.

So, not good to go unless you get the confirmation code from the profiles page.

Thanks. Jesus this process is nerve wracking. Just a little "you done dude" message would have been cool.

Thanks.

Neutralizing playa dust

So we all know, or should know, that playa dust is highly corrosive when wet. I’ve been told it has the base ph of Drano, and have seen the volcano effect when I poured a splash of vinegar on the playa. Now, the conventional wisdom is you wash everything, especially metals and moving parts, in vineg...

Woo, hoo. Got the “phaser” components together. Ebay is a beautiful thing. 1350mw green DPSSL laser, Telescope computerized tracking motor drive, and a 10x laser beam expander lens. Working on the control system now. So, a typical laser pointer is 5mw. At 1350mw, this thing can literally be seen fro...

Re: Manta Car Structural Help!

Depends on if you need to disassemble it for transport. I just completed structural framing for my mutant using pvc. If you heat gun the ends of the pvc you can flatten and bend then as needed. This would allow you to attach the frame to the car using sheet metal screws. Drill through the car body/c...

Re: "Chaffee" new shuttle build.

"Work" has been progressing nicely. Here, the additional windows in the front have been added. Eventually, for the playa the glass will be removed so it doesn't attract dust and make for poor visibility. Krylon fusion was used to give it the Titanium gray look. Pods and a few of the decorations have...

PVC pipe and fittings would make a good understructure. Add a heat gun and you could make just about anything, and it could be madee to come apart for transport.

Re: "Chaffee" new shuttle build.

Over the past few weeks I added the shells of the engine pods, the internal support structure, and cut and framed the main windows. An additional set of windows to give better visibility are going on the front sides. In the process of adding the top fixture, and doing minor fill ins and panels, such...

Re: Heat, dust and small engine Questions

So, after much research, mostly uneccessary, I found a coupple of things. The best air filters for the dust problem come from K&N filters. They replace the air boxes on most vehicles completely, and are well known in the ATV and racing industry. The filters get sprayed with oil to help collect parti...

Re: How fast can you charge an electric cart?

Have to concur with the fuck electric camp. I built three electric based MVs over the years trying to be green and cool. They suck. For a bunch of reasons. Charge time. 4 hours if you’re lucky and have lots of power. 1000w gen is very inadequate for a golf cart. Low capacity. You never get the range...

Re: "Chaffee" new shuttle build.

The doors will be removable, and there may be screens or removable window sections. Haven't got that far yet. Rear panel will probably include partial shade fabric, but have to weigh all this against shelter from dusting. Another possibility is build a fan into the shell. We shall see. In other shut...

OK, so getting the dune buggy took half-way to forever. The one shipped was a cheep POS, so had to be sent back to be replaced with another POS, but this one was fixable. The origional body for the shuttle was too long for the buggy body, so it was shortened from 12 feet to 10, the engine pods will ...

I've been looking at base vehicles for a few years now. I wanted a duel use set of wheels so I can play with it off road when not at burning man. Ideal base would have been an Argo 8 wheeler, but way too expensive. Golf carts have some inhernt problems IMO. Electric just doesn't quite make it on the...

Heat, dust and small engine Questions

Two years ago I ventured onto the playa with a mutant vehicle “Rat” based on a 50 cc GY6 scooter engine. It made it to Wednesday before the engine choked on the dust and seized. Got towed back to camp by a giant cat car. Lots of fun before that though. This year I’m building a bit bigger; making an ...
