Re: "New" shade structure material
Capinator, I don't understand the "on the diagonal to keep things taught". Can you maybe post a diagram or pic of what you mean? I too tried a taping based cover for this year's burn. Tip #1: If possible do ALL taping before you're in a desert where the constant dusting negates the adhesive of the t...

Re: Lag screws vs everything else...
Lag screws and the impact driver were golden. When you add in the two-chain-link-attachment trick, I started putting them in my pocket like they were the new prison yard currency. Still though, I was almost giggly knowing that I was using this pansy-ass way to secure everything better than ever inst...

Scaled Portable Monkey Hut - a little larger, with 5ft pipes
I just went through this with a friend and I thought it might be worth sharing. This is how we scaled up the usual MH and no pipe is over 5ft in length. What we're about to do is replace half of each rib with a 1.25" diameter pipe and add a 3ft apex segment and then join it all together as best that...

Re: Questioning the "Spine" of monkey huts - I dont underst
As can be seen by the answers, you can do it without a spine, but you need an alternative to it that has been designed to replace it. In practice, there are compressive forces that the spine is meant to resist in its role of keeping the ribs a fixed distance apart. Additionally, having a spine at th...

Only slightly off topic... my first burn, we came out in a 4 door hatchback packed from bottom to top. We had everything we needed in there. However, when it came time to leave.... let's just say that if you've never folded a large tarp before, naive (though logical at the time) attempts to fold it ...

Re: Elevating a monkey hut
What you're attempting is perfectly doable. My hut from last year was around the height of what you're requesting. To do this robustly, I'd advise you to use additional construction techniques that aren't needed for standard Monkey Hut dimensions. My starting point is what I posted here earlier as a...

interesting concept. however like many things on playa, they will get bent, hammered together during assembly, covered in dust. what slid together at home may be a way larger pile when you get ready to leave the playa. Amen. I had this issue with PVC last year. I ended up cutting the really bent pi...

Don't overlook the root cause of ticket shortages: this event is held on public land. I can imagine BMorg increasing the number of tickets towards the demand. That's how America works. Make more money after all. But the attendance is set by the land managers. Your gov't at work. If no ticket the ba...

If it makes you feel any better, there are usually more than 1,000 tickets in the OMG sale. That is the only thing that would make it better. I hope you're right. Thanks. Ok, 80k registered for 40k tickets. Lets assume each lucky bastard that got in bought two tickets. This means that 20k got in and 60k got boned. Now, as of today, there are 60k angry registrations looking for 120k tickets (again, going with 1reg equals a desire for 2 tickets). Even if 2/3 of those r...

Re: Which cars can fit 10 foot pvc pipe inside?
Off topic but since there's a mention of cutting the pipes in half, I wanted to chime in with the best way that I found for re-fitting them back together. First, especially for a monkeyhut design, do NOT try to use the standard fittings or couplers. While this may hold at first, in my experience, th...

What did you learn this year?
I'll start it off: I learned the critical importance of proper weight distribution when loading all yer shit onto a pickup truck. It was a harrowing ride to BM just to wait in line an extra 20 hrs for things to dry at the gate. On the plus side, I'm one of the few who have been hailed upon while at ...
