Re: "New" shade structure material

This year - portable leaf blower mister. It's pretty sick. Plus all the stationary misting goodness!

Re: "New" shade structure material

You can find white 10x10 tarp for maybe $10 if you look. An equivalent attic foil tarp, taped and grommeted, is probably about $20. Is it worth it? I think so. It is significantly cooler and darker under the attic foil. But, I didn't measure anything. It's just a matter of preference - and for us th...

Re: "New" shade structure material

We expanded our traditional 10x10 based shade structure this year and added 10x10 attic foil tarps that we had taped together and grommeted (so much knee time!). The material is also epic for that. Significantly cooler under the reflective tarps. So much so that when the sun moved and came through g...

Tower for mounting LED art up high?

Hi all - how are people mounting their LED sculptures up high - like the "H" for camp Hardly? Are those Ham Radio Towers? How do you secure the base?

Thanks!

Design for platform on top of a container?

We finally got through the waitlist and got a 20’ container from Black Rock Storage this year. Yay! It was great standing on top to view the sunset. But, the top is flimsy and obviously there are no railings. Does anyone have a good design for a deck to put on top?

Re: "New" shade structure material

I would say these will last a few years. We built two tents last year and enlarged them this year. The old parts were fine. Everything is folded up again and ready for next year. Nothing tore, everything is ready to go. We have some minor rips around two of the zippers that we will need to tape and ...

Re: "New" shade structure material

These worked awesome! My DIY swamp cooler failed, but these were completely dust free and comfortable to sleep in until about 1:00, without active cooling. For the one where we gifted misting, we had people in for hours to get out of the dust and heat, and one couple tried to consummate their relati...

That's like asking how much money it costs to have a race car. The answer is the same no matter what kind of racing. It takes ALL of it!

For those following the various attic foil monkey hut threads. Here is a photo of our first prototype build. We made some changes to seal better, and I think it will work pretty well! (knock on wood). We will be at 4:45 and E with four of these if you would like to check it out! See you all there! n...

Re: Aluminet over tent

We had a structure with aluminet over white tarp, and it was not that effective. You really need to have breathing space under the aluminet. We have switched to attic foil radiant barrier, which we have found to be much more effective (and cheaper - but more work).

Re: Fresh Water Delivered?

In the questionnaire, they are asking for purposes of the "civic water program". If you have a tank, they will fill it at $1.00 per gallon, which I think is a discount from USS rates. We run a misting tent and were "approved" for the program last year. The approval email didn't come until August 4. ...

Re: "New" shade structure material

Hi zigzag, here are the drawings. You need about 46 linear feet. You would need to figure out some way to attach it to the frame (tape). If you make the frame length maybe 12 inches shorter than your top width, the top will "hang" over the edges of the cone and help keep wind or rain from catching. ...

Re: "New" shade structure material

Hi ZigZag, Cone math is easy once you get the hang of it. Cone attaching is difficult. Our design this year depends upon having PVC fittings. It is hard to explain, but the cones are tied to the PVC frame, and the frame gets its rigidity from the fittings. This design allows us to keep the top, the ...

Re: Monkey Hut Plan

I've used 1-1/4 PVC cross, tee, and other fittings with 6" sleeves for 1" PVC. I know that most others use tied spines (or even no spines at all), I prefer the fittings. I haven't had an issue with shattering. Some of these fittings were used in extremely high bending tension to make a PVC dome. Usi...

Re: Monkey hut frame help

Taping - you will need some space and at least two friends. Cut pieces to length, stretch them out side by side. then tape the seam with the bi-filament tape in one go. You can walk on the attic foil and it won't mind. If you can walk on it in socks it is better. Turn the foil over and put aluminum ...

Re: Monkey hut frame help

Main thing - and mentioned in prior posts - is using the fact that 1-1/4 pvc fits nicely over 1" pvc. We use 1-1/4 fitting, glue in a 6" piece of 1-1/4 - this makes extended and stronger fittings less likely to slip out and/or break. On playa we insert the 1" and then screw them together (predrill e...

Re: "New" shade structure material

Hi ZigZag, We are working on a modified design this year so some answers are changing. 1) How do you attach the material to the ribs or is it just pulled taught? Last year we had one monolithic cover that stretched over the frame and was staked to the ground. It was not directly attached to the fram...

Home Depot often, but not always, has the 1" in stock. If you have a Home Depot Pro in your area, they have always had them in stock for me.

Hi all, Sorry for not replying sooner - I haven't looked at this thread for a while. @hooker - we have a monkey hut with 30' 1" PVC ribs at a little over 3 feet spacing. It did great in 2014, bu this year, with the wind, it almost flattened. We had to tie it to my truck to keep it up. Spaced at 5' w...

Re: "New" shade structure material

Hi everyone, I'll try to answer those questions: Seams - we used 6 inch bi-filament on the inside and 3 inch aluminum on the outside. Edges - where the tarp ended in an edge, we folded 6 inch bi-filament over the edge (3 inches on the inside, 3 on the outside) and protected the outside 3 inches with...

It fits perfectly in translucent white 1/2" PEX tubing, which is super cheap. It's not as good as clear plastic tubing, but it is WAY cheaper.

Re: Taller monkey hut?

We have three large monkey huts all with 1" PVC. One is made with 30' ribs at 3.5' spacing. We do a lot more cross bracing; cross brace every 5 feet. We also build a half dome at either end with a cover, so that it is "sealed". It has been very successful, but this year it was squished pretty flat i...

those are great questions, and I wish I had better lighting pictures. for 120v, pretty mundane stuff - fans, pumps for swamp coolers, pumps for greywater to the evapotron, battery chargers, air pumps for air mattresses, stuff like that. We had three structures - so when you have a fan in each one - ...
