Re: Hello and Welcome... What's your name? Tell me about You

Hi all, I'm Kevin from Las Cruces, New Mexico. My wife and I are attending our first burn this year after hearing about it year after year from some friends of ours (who, sadly, won't be attending this year :( ). I'll throw up my own topic here in a bit to introduce us a little better. See ya, and g...

Re: old ripped bedsheets as shadecloth

My one thought on the bedsheets idea is that I think (from what I remember of blanket fort construction) tying knots in the corners generally leaves more slack in the center, turning them into scoops/sails. You may want to investigate a workaround to get them flat--either a way to take the slack ou...

Re: Lag screws vs everything else...

I just read this entire thread. Great stuff here.

Will these work well as the upright stakes for a monkey hut (that the pvc slides over), maybe using the 24 inch-ers, or am I better off staying with the rebar for that?

Re: Large monkey hut to shade a pop-up camper - Good idea or

Lol, I went and found it straight away. Thanks for the help though. The hut they're talking about is for times the size of what I'm looking to do, and the photo FIGJAM posted goes me hope. Since this is for shade mostly, and wind block secondly, I'm thinking that we may cut some coffee can-sized fla...

Re: Large monkey hut to shade a pop-up camper - Good idea or

Jackass, that's fantastic! I'll have to give that a go sometime. Crypto, I did a search of the board before I posted, but I must have missed that. I'll be able to anchor the top of the arch to the top of the pop-up, so my thought is that it'll be even more secure than the average hut. I'll have to d...

Re: Shade structure question -- post hole digging

Hey Fossa, I was aware that only post holes were permitted and that larger holes messed up the playa pretty bad. Didn't know the post holes also screwed up the scenery that badly. I've opted not to do any digging.

I hear that! So do the EMT feet sit over a protruding rebar? Just wondering how it's all anchored to the ground.

Re: Large monkey hut to shade a pop-up camper - Good idea or

Thanks Jackass. That's a pretty impressive setup you've got there. I'm going to remodel this trailer in the fall, and I think I'll look into putting together an EMT shade structure then. Does it all fit inside the popup? Also, how long does it take you to set up? Monkeystyle, the cost will be about ...

Re: Shade structure question -- post hole digging

Alright! That's all I needed to hear. So the lag bolts would replace the rebar in option 1? I could try that out. I don't have an issue with the rebar (might pick up some Home Depot stakes, though), but the lag bolts sound interesting. I'd have to borrow a cordless driver from someone though. All I'...

Large monkey hut to shade a pop-up camper - Good idea or no?

My wife and I are popping our Burning Man cherries this year. After a lot of hemming and hawing trying to decide whether to pitch a tent under a monkey hut, build a hexayurt, or just bring our vintage 1991 pop-up camper; we're starting to settle on the idea of the pop-up. I'm going to rig up some so...

Shade structure question -- post hole digging

Hi there! This is our first burn, and we're pretty excited (as you can imagine). Anyhow, I will be building a triangular shade structure that requires three 2x4 upright posts. I've got two options: Option 1; I place the posts directly on the playa and use tension between the posts and six rebar stak...
