Much of SL is a ghost town. If you hang around long enough you'll have some furry come along with more than free hugs to give you. Burn2 or not.

Re: Burning Man festival in Second Life

I gotta build tigerman camp this year. Downloading the second life viewer to check this out again now. Virtual reality is probably a ways off, despite the hype on oculus / vive. But this second life burn thing has been going on for some time now. And if you need motivation to see a virtual world, it...

Re: Friend seeking to volunteer at BRC

I'd actually warn off center cafe based on my experience this year. Ice cashiering is a good idea. We have another older burner pal who worked DMV for the first time this year and had a great experience. I recommend this friend consider volunteering at a regional if possible before the burn. Volunte...

Re: Belt Bikes

I ride a Priority bike for commuting and it is a belt drive. I have never seen anyone else riding them in the cities I've lived in with it, they are quite rare. Randoms enjoy remarking on their oddity, bike shop people tisk-tisk at their unfamiliarity. These things are pretty tight and I don't think...

These electric bikes are buzzing around all over the place. This guy ran into the back of the truck. http://boston.cbslocal.com/2017/09/30/pelham-bicyclist-killed/ Yes, this is an helpful and relevant anecdote, sham. I’m curious how this furthers the discussion in this thread about ebikes at burnin...

Re: eBikes and Burners who Ride them

Here is one I am building for BM , next time I come out. Still has no brakes yet . It weighs 100lbs , the motor came off a mc bike that weighed 125lbs and could hold a rider 176lbs. So im good at 142lbs :) It goes about 15mph tops , still alot of work to do yet , and if I want to paint it I have to...

Re: eBikes and Burners who Ride them

I think that there will be no response or reaction to ebikes next year. As one person who spent the least amount of time out of camp ever this year, I still saw multiple gas-powered mopeds speeding down city streets. If they can fart around with impunity I have a hard time imagining that ebikes wil...

Re: eBikes and Burners who Ride them

I had my Ebike at Burning Man, best idea ever. Helped my cargo bike transport up to 3 people (besides myself) at a time. I use the largest size Kryptonite New York U lock, actually locks up fast and ez with it, and takes a battery powered cut off wheel about 10 minutes to cut through, with a lot of...

Re: Preventing Bike Theft / Finding 'Lost' Bike Ideas

My first year, I really did think people on ePlaya were being weird about locking up bikes. But I went through with it all the time anyway. I think the Org needs to be pushing bike lock ups, much harder. Like a Jackrabbit speaks in the weeks leading up to the event with the first headline: LOCK UP Y...

Re: How I charged my electric vehicles

Anyway, back to OP's topic, think for the capacity of eBikes, and electronic vehicles a solar setup should do it. In the other thread on eBikes, a person with 64Ah of battery did only one 4 hour charge all week. This can easily be handled with a 100W panel, a 35Ah battery and a $20 controller. Also ...

Re: How I charged my electric vehicles

You may do a minimalist camp, I never have. I like to run a big enough A/C to cool my whole rig, not the smallest little thing that hasn't got a hope in hell against the desert heat in a bigger space. I like to run an air compressor, for tools, tires, and having a live blowgun to blow the playa dus...

Re: How I charged my electric vehicles

The one thing you mentioned that isn't accurate is that generators are "expensive". Considering the cost, weight and complexity of a solar setup that can deliver a continuous three or four thousand watts, solar hasn't yet gotten anywhere near the point of practicality for temporary portable use, fo...

Re: How I charged my electric vehicles

I dislike that solar > charge controller > batteries > inverter > charger > batteries cycle because every step results in lost energy. But sometimes it's not about squeezing the last watt. For smaller loads solar panels are pretty darn useful...never underestimate harvesting 300Wh per day from a ti...

Re: Electric LED Surfboards?

We use a lot of parts from off the shelf electric skateboards from China, but there is a bit of work on speed, braking, battery monitoring, etc. Battery estimation turns out to be a pretty hard problem, we are using some chips designed for laptops to do this that use a machine learning process to t...

This year we worked with a surfboard shop in Santa Cruz to cover the boards with semi-transparent fiberglass. Previously this shop had made real surfboards with LEDs in them. We also ...

I don't see how sleeping alone has anything to do with the great tips and info on sleeping in a car. There's clearly room for more than one in there if someone else wants to make that work. This is good self-reliance info for a potential burner who might otherwise looking to plug and play. Eplaya is...

Re: cooling your tent or van

I think the heat rendered even good cooler spec designs not helpful enough. It was really hot this year. That said I think there is a reasonable case to be made for bringing out complete 5000 BTU air conditioners and doing the building portion in the solar space. Solar is cheaper and better than eve...
