I don't know the etiquette of what I'm about to advocate... but your first arrivals might try to arrive with as much 'infrastructure' as possible. I would include in my definition of infrastructure: shade structures, evap ponds, shower facilities, and tents. you can always re-pack the infrastructure...

Just off the op of my head, the weak point in the brolly seems to be the inversion effect. What if you open the bumpershoot , then sew some unstretchable strap around the outer edge.
