i use the stuff at work sometimes and yes it is slick !! a well done knot ( bowline, sheet bend, double sheet bend is all i use ) backed up with half hitches and then secured with tape and it will hold.... to cut it, i usually twist it so it is rounder and cut them with lineman's side cutting pliers...

i am going to throw this out here because it may help someone else that is not confident enough to let others know... i had to have surgery on my testicles a month ago and i am thinking that by the time the burn happens i may not be back to 100% ... meaning that any bike i get will probably not have...

gonna throw my experience with wire rope in here --- used to use it as a clothes line.... strong, held up well, got some used lengths left over from work... i used (crap can't remember the name off the top of my head ) wire rope clamps to secure the ends... long story short,with all the kids hanging...

IMHO the miniscule glass shards would not only be impossible to clean up thoroughly , you run the risk of getting an "invisible" piece lodged into a painful area of the foot ... not a great idea in my book, but others may know or have a workable solution... coming from someone who has had one of tho...
