Re: cooling your tent or van

Not sure if you plan to have the pumps running 24/7 with the fans, but if you don't, once the media dries out you will fill the tent with dust because the media is not fine enough to stop dust when dry. I put a float valve in mine as a kill switch for if/when the water levels get too low. My main m...

Re: cooling your tent or van

Does anyone have a favorite float switch to automatically shut the pump and fan off when the water runs out? I've found a lot of small ones that are only rated for 300-500mA which might not be enough(??) to run my pump and fan. I'm trying this one http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004LR4J78 but it'...

Re: cooling your tent or van

Have you turned it on yet? lol! yes of course :). Verified that the remote works to operate the fan and pump independently. Verified that the toggle switches work too ( as a backup in case remote is lost/broken/etc... ). Verified the pump stops when the water runs low. Verified that the air f...

Re: cooling your tent or van

While testing the cooling effect here in San Francisco, I don't really observe the bucket cooler dropping the temp by more than ~6 degrees or so. Is this to be expected due to Carl the Fog's presence? I basically don't see much (if any) difference when the pad is wet or dry. Should I be concerned?!...

Re: cooling your tent or van

I finished my bucket cooler setup, with the low-water level automatic pump-switch-off, wireless transmitter/receiver to control the fan/pump separately and from within my yurt, PLUS two physical override switches just in case I lose the remote, batteries die, or the receiver/relays fail for one reas...

Re: cooling your tent or van

I'm a little nervous when it comes to wiring the 2 together with water being involved. is it safe to splice the pump together with the fan? any tutorials or photos on doing it? All of my solder points are inside the bucket (fan and pump). I solder'd, then goop'd the solder point, then heat shrank t...

Re: cooling your tent or van

Ok so I finished my prototype of my bucket. Couple of notes / thoughts / ramblings below. I would love feedback / inputs if anyone has some! 1. Wired up two separate switches to control fan and pump independently so that the pump can get the material nice and wet before I engage the fan. 2. I went w...

Re: cooling your tent or van

What kind of shelter, is it shaded, is it insulated, does it have a radiant barrier, etc... This year I've built an h15 hexayurt (~160 sq ft footprint, 6 ft walls with the center of the roof at 10ft). The yurt is made out of 1.5 inch thick RMax. It will not be under our camps shade structure. What ...

Re: cooling your tent or van

The size is fine, but the CFM is not going to be enough to make you happy happy. Thanks for your input! I figured the 138 vs 190 wouldn't be much of a deal breaker, particularly given the price difference and 1A current draw difference ( and given that most of the other portable swamp cooler instru...

Re: cooling your tent or van

I bought this fan for the 5-gal bucket swamp cooler: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001JKNMBE?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00 Any input on that one? From what I can tell, the CFMs are pretty good and the price is low. It seems like it may be a little bulky, but I think that the...
