Re: Redirecting some energy and efforts for lack of big events for which to build big art and community this year
My plan is to buy 200 acres about 30 minutes west of Portland, including an old boarding school. The property has a dozen buildings including 150 bedrooms (mostly dorms, some apartments and houses), a big commercial kitchen and some smaller kitchens, 14k sqft of wood / welding / auto shops, 100k sqf...

Redirecting some energy and efforts for lack of big events for which to build big art and community this year
I'm trying to organize a big coliving / maker / permaculture / burner / ... community project near Portland. Not gonna pitch it here, in an attempt to avoid moderation. Message me if you'd like to know more.

Yeah, I've been on some of those teams. I'm already reaching out to the land owners I have contact with.

Seeking statements about LNT and related topics from property owners where regional burns have happened
I find myself needing to convince a conservation land trust that burners (in general, not a specific existing regional burn event) are not equivalent to the people ruining campsites in national parks. While LNT and playa restoration stories about BRC are easy to find, I'm looking for something less ...

Re: How would you organize a regional burn if part of the land had to be open to the public during the daytime?
My first take would be to encourage 'public Art and installations' in the part that is open during the day; give it a voluntary, strong 'local, family, community' feel. That's definitely part of the plan! Keep any adult related stuff in the 'private area' of the woods and all camping in the open fi...

How would you organize a regional burn if part of the land had to be open to the public during the daytime?
Suppose you wanted to organize an event similar to Transformus, Firefly, Burn in the Forest, or any of the other mostly-wooded regional burns, but the land has a quirk... Most of the forest is open to the public during daylight hours. A small amount of forest and some open field space could be priva...

Re: The Perfect Ticket System
Are you familiar with Arrow's Impossibility Theorem ? It's about voting. There are three traits an ideal voting system should have, and this guy proved it's actually impossible to satisfy all three. Every voting system must give one of them up to achieve the other two. That's the situation here. You...

Re: 2019 Satellite Sunday BRC for finding open camping spots
"Satellite Sunday"
Is it expected/known that someone(s) will be tasking satellites for photos on Sunday each year? I've seen people in the past do things in the dust that they expect to show up on sat photos, but without knowing which day they would be seen.

Re: Advice for spotting scam camps?
Now I know that when future newbs ask the same questions this October, I can just tell them to wait for July before committing, when there will be a lot more (and more reputable) camps recruiting. That would be inaccurate at best, completely wrong at worst. The camps that are still recruiting in Ju...

I'm not arguing the rest doesn't exist. When you consider every part of the rules together, you get a ban on motorized surfboards.

With an aspect ratio so close to 1:1, I have to ask what drives the rectangle-ness of your plan? You will save a lot of organizational and logistical headaches down the line if you make it 30x30 or 36x36 instead.

Re: Misappropriation and commodification of BM camps
I ran into this crazy rule last year. Because my camp was conceptually affiliated with an off-playa nonprofit of the same name, I was forbidden from seeking people on this forum to join our rideshare (and/or camp with us?). I didn't make a list of all the other "violators" in my arguments with the f...

Re: Updated Vehicle Rules and Protocols at Burning Man
The requirement for working pedals is going to make some of my plans for small electric vehicles harder, but I think I can still manage. I had a technically-a-moped in high school where the pedals were really just a glorified kickstart and legal requirement than a useful option.

Re: There's nothing wrong with basing cleanup deposits on exodus cleanup results
How about camps don't invite anyone they don't want to cleanup after for free? Or as a gift? Or just cause they care about how their camp leaves the playa and not what their moop map looks like for next year? An act of love to the Playa itself so-to-speak? Any fee that ends up in someone's pocket r...

There's nothing wrong with basing cleanup deposits on exodus cleanup results
In their invite they state that 50% of their MOOP deposit collected from campers ($500/person) is dependent on the overall camp score (something only the last people leaving the camp can influence). My 9-12 person camp makes it very clear and explicit that we keep 100% of your cleanup deposit if yo...

Re: Mod abuse: Looks like I'm leaving?
I've been to the event in question. It is not in any way a burn, or even remotely Burning Man related. Some burners show up, there's some fire spinning, that's the whole connection. 90% of the people there are Chicago locals who are just attending a party in the park, watching some spinning performa...

Could they finalize this without approval at the state level?
Also, how specific is the BM location? I know it moves year to year, but I'm not sure how far. Feet? Miles?

After the CDL, get ready for California emissions compliance for diesel powered vehicles. The truck I haul horses to Ca and back in is being replaced with a new one because of this, at great cost. https://www.arb.ca.gov/msprog/onrdiesel/documents/FSRegSum.pdf Thankfully, "motor homes for non-commer...

Ah, OK, so all LIT folks have to go to will-call regardless. Hmm. Talk about complicating the rideshare situation. The guidelines about not doing willcall on foot are "should"s, not "must"[not]s. I'm still super wary of taking willcall folks on my rideshare, but I've heard a lot of people are going...
