Re: What is IP? Why is it Important?
BMORG likely have a load of IP lawyers who are also Burners that they can draw upon for little or no cost.

Re: Burning Man and environmental impact of travelling there
This is ad hominem. It's attacking the person making the argument and not addressing the argument itself. My conscience is pretty clear regarding the amount of flying I do and my carbon footprint generally, both of which are well below average. Instead, how, if at all, would you seek to mitigate aga...

Re: Burning Man and environmental impact of travelling there
Thank you, Ratty.
Every thread on here that broaches the environment doesn't seem to go anywhere and ends up with the poster being dismissed as being a troll, so, again, should that be all you have to say then please don't respond to it.

Re: Burning Man and environmental impact of travelling there
Again, I'm happy to address any reasoned responses to my arguments, but ad hominem is waste of everyone's time. Also, read what I'm saying again. I'm not saying that we should ban any explosions or the like, merely that there a range of options that could be introduced with minimal inconvenience or ...

Re: Burning Man and environmental impact of travelling there
Elderberry, I'm aware of the VP system and I'm aware of the rationale behind it. Instead of having the blindingly obvious pointed out to me in a sarcastic fashion, it would be have more constructive for ygmir to have tried to make a suggestion as to how the present system could be improved. Can I ma...

Re: Burning Man and environmental impact of travelling there
Again with the sarcasm. Maybe instead of that you could offer up a suggestion as to how the present system could be improved, unless you think it's perfect as it is.

Re: Burning Man and environmental impact of travelling there
Again, thank you for the responses and in particular the posts offering some clarification of where you're all at, as that was what I was really after. Okay, so banning burning stuff and generators is a no? Cool. Makes sense, and they contribute very little to the event anyway in terms of their carb...

Re: Burning Man and environmental impact of travelling there
misfit, my carbon footprint for attending this event would have been substantial unfortunately and I did wrestle with that aspect of it. As I said previously, I'm happy to admit my own pollution footprint, but it's probably more productive to focus on possible areas where the event could improve, or...

Re: Burning Man and environmental impact of travelling there
In terms of strategic direction, what are you suggestions? I do understand that this is a juggernaut of an event now and change must be carefully implemented and gradual, but I'd like to hear what you'd do, be it concrete suggestions or more broad aims.

Re: Burning Man and environmental impact of travelling there
Yuh, I got the sarcasm. I suppose I'm curious though as to why there's such resistance to proposals to make the event more green. Even from a self interest perspective, the more environmentally friendly Burning Man is the better as it does seem to be coming under increasing fire and plenty of people...

Re: Burning Man and environmental impact of travelling there
In point of fact, it's what motivated me to pose the question. Also, were the organisers to ban attendees from outside North America, then fine. But even if they did choose to implement such a ban, it's not something they could realistically control. Probably better to add an international supplemen...

Re: Burning Man and environmental impact of travelling there
Are you saying there is no problem? That there is a problem, but it's one that's difficult to address? Or that it's simply not worth addressing?
Still, should you feel compelled to flounce, at least you're doing it with Gene Wilder style, so you're forgiven.

Re: Burning Man and environmental impact of travelling there
The problem, as I see is it, is that the event is already coming under fire from various quarters for being environmentally irresponsible. Should Burning Man wish to continue in its present form, I think it will need to some extent embrace and encourage more environmentally friendly practices. The e...

Re: Burning Man and environmental impact of travelling there
I'd be interested to work out the relative pollution footprint per person for someone flying into the event from California rather than driving, say sharing the car with two other people. You're right though, that it's people flying long haul that constitutes the lion's share of the air pollution, t...

Re: Burning Man and environmental impact of travelling there
I've read other threads discussing this, but the problem is that many seem to be little more than deliberate trolling which somewhat impedes constructive discussion. The event has to be located in a remote area with little flora or fauna by necessity, I get that. All I am saying is that it would be ...

Burning Man and environmental impact of travelling there
This was a question that was raised in another thread relating to the issue of transportation, however, I have now posted it here as it seems to merit its own dedicated thread. I was in particular wondering to what extent increased air traffic squares with Burning Man's commitment towards the enviro...

Re: VIP makes me sad for them.
This is not presently a green event, but it does aspire to be. And there have been plenty of statements to that effect from the organisers. Environmental responsibility is even a central component of the Leave No Trace principle. At least, that is unless one is suggesting that any, presently informa...

Can we drop this now, please? As I've said before, the situation is substantially different to the one you're painting. I'm not going to go into the details as, frankly, it's none of your business. I would also like to add that anyone who might be in receipt of a LIT should not have to somehow justi...

Re: VIP makes me sad for them.
All that article says is that turboprops are more efficient than jets for planes that can carry less than 70 people. There is no reference to turboprops' relative pollution footprints relative to other modes of transport, which is what I was really asking for, albeit not in a very clear fashion, my ...

Re: VIP makes me sad for them.
You need to look at it on a per passenger basis, and in those terms aircraft are more polluting than cars, even heavily laden cars pulling trailers. Also, yes, turboprops are more efficient than jets, but remember that a 747 carriers more passengers relative to the total amount of fuel consumed than...

Re: VIP makes me sad for them.
There hasn't been a formal commitment in this regard yet, you're correct, but there has been repeated messages that Burning Man is striving towards greater sustainability. There's no reason that it could be a lot more environmentally friendly than it is presently, leaving aside that one of the core ...

Re: VIP makes me sad for them.
I was under the impression that the bulk of the greenhouse gas emissions for the event derived from transportation, and that planes emit considerably more pollution, per person, than would a car. I may be misinformed.
