Re: Adult Trikes: Any recommendations?
I have a trike that’s of the Monterey brand 3-speed that I purchased new through Craigslist for $150, and rode on it all week on the playa last year. I also installed an electric motor (to assist me with my freshly torn ACL) and it was the most comfortable ride I’ve ever had. It is very heavy, take...

Re: Burning Post-ACL Surgery?
I worked in med school knee surgery research. We did a lot on ACL and PCL. I know many aerial dancers. Risks are dependent on the repair. Discuss with your surgeon the risks. Around the house and neighborhood is one thing. The possible extremes in BRC are another. As a veteran burner, you know ther...

Re: Burning Post-ACL Surgery?
I tore my meniscus July 6, 2005. I scheduled my arthroscopic surgery for September 24, 2005...after the Burn. Was it painful...yeah, but not debilitating. I was able to walk short distances and ride my bike. Your ACL surgery is prolly much more invasive, so can't help you there. Also, everyone's pa...

Re: Burning Post-ACL Surgery?
Thanks all for the thoughts--appreciate it. My initial thought was also that seven weeks is too soon and that the conditions would be too harsh for my body at that time. I will see how surgery goes and how I feel after during the rehab period. I'm really hoping for a quick and painless recovery time...

Burning Post-ACL Surgery?
Apologies if this has been discussed before (I tried to search with little success), but I am curious to hear if anyone else has had experience with attending the burn post-ACL surgery. A little background on my situation, I completely ruptured my ACL and also tore my meniscus. I am currently in the...

Re: Preparing for 2016--Burner Express/Logistic Questions
Glad this thread could still be helpful! Now that we've finally washed the dust off most of our belongings, I figured I'd provide an update for 2017 here instead of creating a new thread. My boyfriend and I expanded a bit upon our original PVC tensegrity shade structure this year (much to my initial...

Re: Does anyone have a contact for Hoverlandia?
I camped with Hoverlandia next year. You don't need to apply! It is a space reserved for anyone taking the BxB, so as long as you take the bus, you can park yourself in the camp area.
There is a Facebook group that you can join if you so choose.

Get a big top hat for you man. Get a small megaphone. Get a small whip or maybe a riding crop. Get a clipboard and a stopwatch. Doll yourselves up to the tilt. Have some ice cold Jagermister for shots or similar as the prize for participating in the "Strong Man Sled Pull" competition. Get going and...

Re: Bicycle Cargo Trailer / Other Solutions for Transporting Gear Across Playa?
Great, thanks all for the tips! We bungee corded our totes to the hand truck yesterday and I think we're going to walk it back to camp instead of trying to do funny things with our bikes / take up the offer for a ride if someone drives by. We'll look into better wagon and transportation methods for ...

Re: Bicycle Cargo Trailer / Other Solutions for Transporting Gear Across Playa?
If you use duffle bags you can just throw them across the seat and handlebars and walk them to camp. Easy enough and you don't nee the extra hassle of handtrucks. They are 27 gallon hard totes, unfortunately! From the BxB website: "If you are part of a registered theme camp or meeting up with a gro...

Re: Bicycle Cargo Trailer / Other Solutions for Transporting Gear Across Playa?
We use a collapsible wagon attached to the back of a bike for our ice runs...(though I think the one we have is slightly beefier and/or has larger wheels) This looks promising! The dimensions are a little bit too narrow but maybe we could tilt our container to the side a little bit. I'll look into ...

Bicycle Cargo Trailer / Other Solutions for Transporting Gear Across Playa?
Hi all! I was wondering if I could get some tips / suggestions on how to transport gear across the playa without a car. Last year my boyfriend and I used hand trucks to drag our 200 lbs of gear to our camp site from the BxB depot, which was hugely helpful, albeit a bit of a pain. This year, however,...

Re: Playa Hair: Tips, tricks, and general accouterments
I used no rinse shampoo once this year, after three days on the playa, and to this day cannot figure out if I regret it or not... It took a lot of shampoo to even make a dent in my playa-fied hair. Maybe a third of the bottle. I used enough to actually wet my medium-length hair and then took a cotto...

Now that I've had time to recover from our first burn, I figured I'd post up our final results in hopes of it being helpful to others in the future. This is also a response to my other thread about our shade structure. Pictures of final playa set up below: http://i66.tinypic.com/j5jg2h.jpg http://i6...

Re: Securing Shade Structure, Among Other Questions
Looking good. But, again, if you attach links to the bottom of each pole, then the pole can be secured directly - and independently - to the ground with a lag screws. Now their anchor is independent of the ropes and those other anchors. This also means you can lose the ropes running across the grou...

Re: Securing Shade Structure, Among Other Questions
We properly guyed out our shade cloth today and I feel much better about the structure now. http://i65.tinypic.com/71rc3p.jpg We're anchoring the ropes at the bottom down with extra 12" stakes so if anything were to break, the pieces won't be able to go anywhere. We are thinking of tying a section o...

Re: Securing Shade Structure, Among Other Questions
Lag screws are not going flush in defaultia. People are putting 1/2" lag screws flush on the playa. You do not NEED to go down to 3/8". Do do not need 1/2" for the size and wind load of your structure. Going to 3/8" makes them easier to drive into the playa. = less chance of having to resort to a r...

Re: Securing Shade Structure, Among Other Questions
Others may need to chime in on whether this is a ridiculous idea: maybe you could buy some 1" conduit at the local (Reno) Home Depot ($8 each?) and wrap rope at the top of those. Though the rope would still be wrapped at the top, to prevent it from sliding down, some hook, large eyebolt, or T-shape...

Re: Securing Shade Structure, Among Other Questions
So the 3/8" diameter lag screws (that's the shaft, not the head) are generally the lag screws most people are using. They're pretty easy to drill into the playa with ordinary 1/4" impact drivers, and hold tight as well. The 1/2" lag screws may not be that easy to drill in, even in the softer playa,...

Re: Securing Shade Structure, Among Other Questions
You do need the lag screws all the way into the ground. What's the diameter of the lag screws? Large takes more force and uses more battery. But don't sweat the battery use. Defaultia isn't the same soil as the playa. Do bring a socket and ratchet for the lag screws as backup. The longer the ratche...

Re: Securing Shade Structure, Among Other Questions
I second that you will not be able to candy cane rebar with pvc pipe. It can be done without heat but takes a steel pipe and a way to hold it securely while bending - such as along the base of a building foundation. The 2.5 pound hammer should be fine. For my exposed rebar I simple place an inexpen...

Remember that you will want an impact driver, because you'll be screwing things in, not drilling. They're often more portable too. You'll never look back! :) Ah, thank you for the clarification! Hi, I have built a few different tensegrisity structures over the years. Last year I did a 20 ft tensegrity shade structure with aluminet top. I used 6 - 8 ft - 2x2 inverted "v"'s. They were ultimately a bit light so I would be concerned about your choice of PVC pipes, they may be too flexible, may...

Re: Securing Shade Structure, Among Other Questions
You won't be able to bend rebar into candy-canes with a PVC tube. Please if you prove me wrong come back and post how you did it. Once bent, rebar is not hard to pound into the playa with a mini-sledge hammer. Don't use a rubber mallet or regular hammer tho. I personally was under the impression th...
