Re: PVC based shade structure over 10X14 Kodiak tent advice
That looks awesome! I was just thinking that a PVC snap clamp placed near the corners might help prevent sliding/slicing into the aluminet at the corners...or a pool noodle chunk covered in duct tape (to prevent moopy fraying) as a corner softener. But nice to use the tent as the support structure

Re: Self Storage options close to BRC
I know this thread is old, but coming on here to bitch about Public Storage on McCarran near the Trader Joe's. Super convenient, nice to pay online blah blah blah, but I'll be damned if they aren't predatory landlords. Have had storage there since 2017, and our unit has DOUBLED in price into 2022. L...

Re: PVC based shade structure over 10X14 Kodiak tent advice
Good luck with your build! The aluminet/shade cloth I used was large to fit most of the frame. It's a lot of prep (cutting and taping) . With subsequent uses I just needed to refresh the tape stops. The box frame above is much simpler than my design, but easier to transport etc. I think the only thi...

Re: PVC based shade structure over 10X14 Kodiak tent advice
The aluminet was also covered in dust over the week, and likely lost some of it's reflective awesomeness. Tapping it to remove dust is not advised. Haha. That being said, the 2018 burn was broiling hot and the shade structure was a godsend, also held up with the mid-week windstorm. Aside from living...

Re: Fitting a kodiak tent in a monkey hut
A little late for this past year, but I modified the monkey hut design to fit over my 10'X14' Kodiak (placed sideways in the hut). Used aluminet for shade cloth. Check: "PVC based shade structure over 10X14 Kodiak tent advice" thread for plans posted. The footprint is 15'x24'. I've used it the past ...

Re: PVC based shade structure over 10X14 Kodiak tent advice
I'm limited as to position of my 'sub camp' at camp: I petition for my 35'x15' plot, and that is just enough for the monkey hut and van. As I cant rotate the hut to one side or the other, the tent is near an area where we get the most shade benefit in the AM. But, as some ESD shifts are PM or night,...

Re: PVC based shade structure over 10X14 Kodiak tent advice
Hi Hooker! I was wondering who you were! Your 'length research' pics that I referenced were fantastic. :) If I'm reading your post above correctly, you're using the 1.25" PVC for the bulk of the ribs with a central 1" insert for a connector? Or are you running 1" all the way along the length of the ...

Re: Volunteerism Decline Discussion
To Ratty, LOF does sell out. The culture of volunteerism is promoted much more with that regional and much more palpable in the air (to a lesser degree the Burn Burn, and I felt the Love Burn in Miami was closer to the party crowd of the Burn.) Having the 'reward' for volunteering be a ticket offer ...

Re: Volunteerism Decline Discussion
Personal experience only, but this will be my 5th year at the burn. 1st year got a ticket through main sale, and couldn't imagine coming to an event all week while watching others work. Volunteered for ESD, and am now a station lead. Can't see doing the event WITHOUT volunteering, but everyone has p...

Re: condition of lag screws after removing them from PLaya??
At a regional, I used rebar, and my friend helping to pack them up, after brushing off surface dirt etc, sprayed them down with WD40. She seemed certain of this. Anyone know +/- ?

Re: PVC based shade structure over 10X14 Kodiak tent advice
Looking forward to building this again for the burn. I made two more of these and set them up end to end for a regional burn. For those, we used tarps instead of aluminet, as rain was the bigger factor. There were occasional wind gusts, so I ran a rope along the long axis of each shade tarp and tack...

Re: Re-bar or Lag Screws for a Monkee Hut ?
Coming on this thread late for 2018, but I used 2' rebar to stake down my very modified monkey hut (15'x24' with a 25' arc). Then tied the end rib pieces down to the rebar with paracord threaded through each rib, using icicle hitches on the end, attached to the rebar. Might as well use that pounded ...

Re: Cargo Van Rental Anxiety
Also, I don't think they can sue you for taking the vehicle to Burning Man (you're not leaving the country or stealing the vehicle) but technically, you are taking a rental vehicle on an unpaved road. I think that if you had engine issues or a breakdown, the extrication process would be on your shou...

Re: Cargo Van Rental Anxiety
We rent a cargo van from LA . They asked me if I was going to Burning Man, and I decided to be truthful (I was taken off guard when he asked and just like that, the cat was out of the bag...)(Enterprise truck rental). He just asked to bring it back clean. Aside from the drive, the rental is way chea...

Re: Sleeping in a Cargo Van.
Hi. Found this thread a year later. Curious how the cargo van sleeping was. We are adding another person to our group (now 3). Previous setup was coming to the event in a cargo van; we have a 10X14 Kodiak under modified monkey hut shade. Now with 3 people (cots) in the tent, things are going to get ...

Re: Sizing a Monkeyhut.
I have a long thread on here agonizing over this topic (fitting monkey hut over a 10X14 kodiak in my case.) After some back and forth and wisdom from the hive, I made my own 15' X 24' design with Aluminet. Loved it. Worked great at 2017 burn and survived that windstorm that launched a full size tram...

Re: Anyone have feedback on a Kodiak 10x10 ft tent?
I have a 10x14' Kodiak and purchased a bunch of rebar spikes instead of the tent stakes (looks like rebar with a nail head welded to the top.) I think I paid about $40-50 for the set, maybe less. Have used them for 3 burns and they are brick shithouses. Picture is representative of what I got, but m...

Ok. I wrote the distributor. They order it in bulk from the overseas shipper but only have small pieces that are grommeted and taped. I asked them if they would be able to sell larger pieces custom cut, grommeted and taped and they said they would NOT be able to do that. (I just don't have the sewin...

Did you end up getting the Alumicloth? very curious about properties, etc. If Aluminet's patent has expired, I'm always on the lookout for good shadecloth. Making more shade structures for a regional burn, and would love to hear if you purchased.....

Sweet, we could design a custom LoRa GPS logger with flashing and audible alert, geofence feature, custom iPhone app with map of the city, a mesh network to extend range, and solar-charged lithium batteries, and it would be attached to a metal cable that goes around your bike frame and through a wh...

Oh my. How nice to think of women and your unique gift.
ESD has OB tampons (no applicator) and regular Tampax (cardboard applicator). If you really felt obligated to bring tampons, I'm sure it would be much appreciated.
Station 6 (really around 5:30) gets the most traffic.

I also find that hoofing it 5 blocks to the nearest portapotty under duress is a strong negative reinforcer to any of the aformentioned no-lock reasons.
