IAMU has openings!

IAMU (Its all made up) has some openings for campers. IAMU is placed in Home Rule Village at 4:30 and C We have great infrastructure, shade, necessary amenities and amazing food. We are absolutely not a bar camp, and while we hold some day time dance parties, not a sound camp. This is IAMU's third y...

Looking for a long time burner

Hey!

Last year during set up an awesome human being from San Diego who was a very long time burner joined us and lent a well needed hand, cherry attitude and sense of humor. She went by the playa name "Not Dead Yet"

If you know her please send me a private message.

Thanks!

Re: Difference between BM and regionals....

I'm glad to see this thread revived. Especially now that I've attended regionals for a few years and had my first year on the playa, so perspective! Maybe my experience is different because I live in an area where we have a pretty active community and I hang out/camp with people I know at both regio...

Re: Traveling From the East Coast

There is a pretty big burner community in Philly. PEX does a lot of parties, you have the Space Pirates and someone from one of those groups or their friends does a container truck out of Philly to the playa. Then you fly, burner bus, maybe burner bus to Walmart for food, and pick up your stuff on t...

I'd rather deal with assembly of a single speed cruiser than something with brakes and gears in the parking lot. Also, bikes come boxed with a ton of potential moop in the box, so having a place to put it, like a dumpster, is awesome! Still, If I was buying a department store bike and I had an optio...

Re: Bike Builders Unite

In 2014, all the Cranbrooks and other bikes with the same coaster hub (I forget the name. Obscure Chinese outfit. Three initials, I think) made a horrible grinding noise, and the hub often came apart -- the bearings loosened up severely, and the sprocket often popped loose too. I put some serious s...

Hey playa bicycle experienced people! I'll be doing a lot of the tending to my camp's bikes. Lucky for me, this is a duty that I am not handling entirely alone and it is passed to me by someone in camp who will still be around. The bikes are all Huffy Cranbrooks, of a species I've encountered in the...

Pee funnels FTW! Standard gear for female kayakers who use a dry suit - at least that's where I started using one. Getting in and out of a dry suit with gaskets (that you don't want to tear!) is no fun when you really have to go. Then I bought a second one for tent use and thought I was all clever w...

I have a 8' tall 13' diameter sibley bell tent. It stakes down with 13 stakes to attach the guy lines, and 13 inner stakes to maintain the floor shape/tension. I've already got a set of 13 rebar stakes capped with washers made by a local metal worker for the outer guy lines. I had a plan for the flo...

All Drawingablank's advice is solid! I have some foot and ankle issues, so good supportive footwear is critical for me if I'm on my feet a lot. Space for orthotic inserts is a must. I've had really good luck with tactical boots. They hold up pretty well, come in sand color (for the desert, yo!) or b...

Re: Difference between BM and regionals....

I think that your mileage really does vary when it comes to regionals. I've been to some extremely well run regional burns that were shining stars on all fronts. I've been to burns where I couldn't get off site fast enough. Some things I've noted about the good ones: The organization behind the burn...

Re: Burners who don't go to Burning Man?

Yeah, when you're on playa you have to specify which "burn" you mean...there are many. I feel that people lose the "burner" classifier once on playa, because everyone who is there is a burner. At least I rarely if ever hear anyone call someone a burner during the event. Off play...

That all makes you very well prepped and a natural for it... but you can't tell your grandkids - or anyone - "I went to Burning Man" if you were never at the actual event. True that! 'Course I wouldn't be reading and posting here if I wasn't planning on going to the playa ;-) It'll make a...

Re: Burners who don't go to Burning Man?

Regionals aren't really comparable to BRC. Regionals can have burns and art, but they aren't Black Rock City. That's the difference, and it's a huge one. That is absolutely correct, which is why I am very much looking forward to going to BRC. As someone who attends 4 to 5 regional burns a year, fro...

I carry around some arm/leg warmers in my pack if it gets really cold but haven't had to use them yet. Also, if you want one thing to keep you warm, start with your head/face/shoulders. Even a scarf wrapped around your head/face will help a lot. Apparently you only lose about 7 to 10% of your body ...

I usually just wear light clothes during the day (shorts, breezy pants, light shirts, whatever) For nighttime I'll throw another layer of light clothes on and top it off with a parka. Old snowboard jackets with hoods work great, especially if it rains. I usually bring a duffel bag full of outfits b...

I have super curly shoulder length hair, of the most interesting color I can get away with at my conservative job. Normally I just braid it into two braids at a burn, and brush and rebraid with some leave in conditioner as part of my morning toilette. I wear a hat, or a thin scarf or bandana over th...
