Ham and GMRS repeaters at the 2020 event
Team Human will bring the DMR repeater we had last year again to the 2020 event. Since we realize there are not all that many folks out there with an amateur radio license we will up our offering and add a GMRS repeater this year to help ppl communicate across playa. The technical data you need to p...

If you are still in need of a ride we may be able to help. We are coming from the east on US50 and will be going to the playa Wednesday late to arrive on playa at midnight (Thats when our WAPs are valid). DM me if you still need a ride and that would work for you.

Re: Questions on Solar and Deep Cycle Charging and MORE!
I tried operating a fridge on solar, and I even had a rack that oriented the panels towards the sun. With 200-300W panels that is a no go. So, if you want to have a fridge you have two ways to solve that: A) use a RV fridge and operate it on solar only for the electronics. Those sip very little powe...

Re: DMR repeater at the event 2019
Sorry, no, we cannot link a good old FM to a TG. At least not with the equipment I have. At the same time a cheap DMR HT is less than or around $70, or a really good one with active APRS beacon in is around $220. OR, you swing by at our camp, ask for me and get a loaner for the event. I will bring t...

Re: DMR repeater at the event 2019
In order to create a back haul we would need a RELIABLE IP(internet) connection of at least 38k. So, it’s not really high bandwidth but a cell connection on the playa as unreliable as they are during the week is not going to cut it. No, I cannot put anything onto a FM channel since the whole protoco...

Re: DMR repeater at the event 2019
I don't know if we can throw to Gerlach. I just measured the distance and at 12 miles we are certainly at the outer edges of the reach, but it might just be possible, since Gerlach is a few feet higher than the Black Rock desert, and with a perfectly flat horizon even two feet make a world of a diff...

Tall antenna: The antenna alone is 17ft tall and will be mounted either on top of a 10ft RV or on top of a 30ft antenna mast. Is that tall enough?

DMR repeater at the event 2019
I know I had this here before but since this gift is new to BM and has the potential of helping a number of people, I am trying to raise a bit more awareness. We are bringing for the first time a DMR ham repeater to BM 2019. A few technical details to limit the number of questions: Freq: 441.175/446...

Re: DMR repeater on the playa
Apparently there is already a TG for Burning Man amateur radio operators: 31326. I am of course going to statically carry that TG on the repeater while its not yet in BRC and it is also a good TG to chat with friends while in BRC.

Re: DMR repeater on the playa
Well maybe it's time I finally got that HAM license I've been meaning to get since high school (was a part of the HAM radio club back then). Hmm... Technicians licenses are easy to get. I even had my wife get one even though she had absolutely nothing to do with the hobby, but that way we can if we...

The BRC WiFi List, despite its title, is the de facto spectrum coordinator on the playa. PM if you don't know how to participate with them. I have made BMORG aware of the fact that I will be bringing a DMR ham repeater. According to the org as long as we stay inside the ham bands we are good to go....

Re: DMR repeater on the playa
I am aware there are FM repeaters around, the problem as I have said is that you have to listen all the time to the radio, which takes away from the event. I was putting in some thought before going down that path. The ability of DMR radios to be programmed to be completely silent unless your radio ...

Not sure if this is the right forum, if not, mods feel free to move, but since it has with resource sharing to do I thought here would be a good place to start. Re: Nevada’s Live Entertainment Tax & What it Means for BMan
Ok, I have to state IANAL or a tax consultant I am a realtor, but that said, I have a problem seeing where Nevada wants to attach that tax to. Burning Man is a California organization and as such if taxable anywhere it is taxable in CA. The tickets are sold in CA, again outside of the legislative re...

Thanks Meathunter. I didn't know that 2nd life was patterned after Burning Man. I tried to play in their virtual world last year but gave up. I thought it would be easy to just download it and be part of the on-line burn. Nope. It was kinda bleak and empty. Plus I was too stupid to figure out trick...

Maybe I misunderstood, if you don't already have a wind turbine and aren't thinking of bringing one because you are into them for your own hobby reasons, you just thought of it because it seemed like a practical power solution, well... DON'T! Do the solar if you are against generators, and do the g...

Re: Wind on the playa?
You bring a windmill. I'll bring rain gear and an umbrella. Then we will be guaranteed of perfect weather. Don't anyone wash your car before coming. Hmm, not sure if this is worth $600 to me. Maybe I should stick with the 4 x 200W panels I already have. Now, I just need to create a stand for those.

This is one interesting thread! Birgin here, but I do plan to bring radios for everyone in our group. Most of the radios will be set to some GMRS frequency for internal communication. Re: Wind on the playa?
No I don't think that's what he's telling you. He's just saying it can get really windy at times. You see almost no wind turbines at burning man. Of the "alternative" power sources, solar is far more common. But really, generators are the way to go at Burning Man, they are by far the most prevalent...

Wind on the playa?
Burgin here, hence the question: just how common is wind on the playa? I am in the planning phase of our 2016 setup and I was thinking I would either bring 3 230w solar panels, or I'll bring one solar panel and a wind turbine. And of course buffered with with a 100ah battery to power all of the elec...

Re: Where to get Rmax panels/boards?
Hmmm, apparently Lowes has the 1" boards, but HD does not? Oh well, I must just have been to the wrong side of the road. Now that of course begs the question: What is the common wisdom: Are 1" panels enough or should I continue to look for 2" panels?

The best wife of all and I are planning to loose our BM virginity in 2016 and it fell to me to plan for shelter.
