Potable water available on Playa?
In previous years, USS (the portapotty people) would deliver or stop by and off load potable water for a fee. USS seems to be out of that business. Is there any other reliable source of potable water once in BRC? I could fill up in Reno on the way in, but pulling an empty trailer is easier than one ...

Re: Map of BRC with Magnetic orientation?
I found the answer to my own question, and leave it here in case someone else needs it. In the city dataset which includes all the precise location and orientation details for every year is the simple statement that BRC True North and South run along the 4:30 - 10:30 axis.

Map of BRC with Magnetic orientation?
I'm considering an art project based on the map of BRC. While it is normally portrayed as the horse shoe shape with six o'clock at the bottom and 12 o'clock on top, that is not the magnetic orientation of BRC. Due South would be about 4:30 so due North would be 10:30. But I also know the city twists...

Re: What are the actual odds of getting a ticket in the main sale?
Yea, I was fortunate enough to stumble into the DGS and now Steward's Sale tickets in 2017 at my first Burn. I just volunteered to help build the camp, only to then find that that might get me on the DGS wagon. I'm sure it's secret information somewhere, and I've read estimates of 20-30% of those at...

What are the actual odds of getting a ticket in the main sale?
Not trying to snark anyone or the mechanism. I'm actually just really curious about the odds. I know the DGS and Steward's Sale tickets have increased recently, so that takes people out of the main sale. On the day when the atomic clock says "NOW!", how many people are logged on, and how many will s...

Re: What material for a Flat Roofed Shade Structure?
I'm setting this up in front of a trailer, so the carports won't work. 24' X 20'. Never thought of the mule tape for diagonal reinforcement, but that seems genius. The Blackrock Hardware kit comes with a solid tarp roof, but I'll replace that with some open shade material. Shade cloth slanting sides...

What material for a Flat Roofed Shade Structure?
Moving on from my trusty Monkey Hut into the brave new world of flat roofed shade. I have seen them with solid tarp roofs and shade cloth roofs and metallic aluminet roofs. I will be using slanted shade cloth on the side to divert wind over the top of the structure. Not sure if there's a reason to d...

What tent now?
My trusty Coleman tent only had 4 Burns in it, and has gone on to the great Walmart in the sky. Coleman no longer makes it. I'm looking for a large-ish (10'X10'? 12'X9'?) tent that can fit within a 12' wide Monkey Hut with either no windows, or at least windows that can be zipped closed. Any suggest...

Re: Does Radical Inclusion equal Racial Inclusion?
To answer the initial question: Yes. Sometimes "No" is a complete sentence. Anything said after that only dilutes what has been said before. If you begin with the statement and Principle of "Radical Inclusion", but then proceed to say, "And we're ESPECIALLY Interested in including you, if you're X, ...

Then cut to the chase, rename the event "Burning Children Who Must Be Watched at All Time to Make Sure They Don't Get Boo-Boos" as produced and monitored by "People Who Know Better Than You." I expect the Borg to outlaw scissors with points next. Not at all interested in living in their idea of Nirv...

Carbon Offsets within Placement 2022?
I just finished the placement application for my Camp. There were quite a lot of questions that really don't apply to us, we're a very small animal. I tried to do my best. There was one question which really gave me pause, and heartburn, however. There is a question WHICH MUST BE FILLED OUT in order...

Critters on Playa?
I'm not talking about pets, I'm wondering if anyone has encountered any local and native creatures on the Playa? Last year (2018) when striking camp, I found tiny distinct footprints in a small area within my Monkey Hut where I'd seldom gone. Five distinct toes (fingers) and about 1/2" across. I nev...

Re: Howling at the Temple Burn?
God, I love you guys.
Yes, this year will be another year, and with luck I'll be a year wiser. Last year, it never occurred to me to join in the howling; I was about silence and reverence. Perhaps this year, I'll need shushing. I promise to take it with grace.

Howling at the Temple Burn?
Last year was my first Burn, and I've got tickets for this year. It was wonderful beyond words. One interesting bit of apparent conflict was during the Temple Burn, when the howls swept across the crowd. There were clear and loud "Shhhhhh's!" in response to the howling, and then the howling would st...

Re: New burner looking at 2018. Tons of questions.
Last year was my first, so I'm still learning, but I will post one contrary opinion here. I was able to make contact with a village before the burn because of a common interest. Because of that connection, I was able to join their Build Crew, and because of that I was granted the opportunity to purc...

Re: Re-bar or Lag Screws for a Monkee Hut ?
Wow. Size matters! Are you using those to replace re-bar to locate things, or to hold things down to the playa? My lag screw search topped out at 3/8" X 14", but maybe I wasn't looking for larger. I need about 12 stakes to locate the structure of my Monkey hut and use lag screws to hold the tarps do...

I can understand the frustration on both sides of this endeavor. I'm a smart guy and I'm good with words and I was 61 last year for my fi...

Re: Re-bar or Lag Screws for a Monkee Hut ?
You need both Lag screws and stakes/rebar. The rebar/stake is driven straight down into the playa and the PVC is placed over it. The rebar/stake locates the PVC and keeps it from sliding sideways, but doesn't hold the PVC down to the ground. Can you picture this? Rebar/Stakes only give lateral resis...

Re: Sizing a Monkeyhut.
It may be hard to get a 14ft width using 2 10ft PVC pipes as ribs. I did the standard Monkey Hut last year and it was great, but if you want headroom and if you only use 2 10ft sections of PVC meeting at the "spine", I think you'll only get about a 12ft width. You could splice longer ribs for more h...

Unnecessarily judgemental guys. Any post that begins, "You don't know enough to..." should disqualify the poster. If this isn't the place to ask questions, where should I go? Given the vast range of panels and inverters and devices contemplated, it seemed easier to cut to the chase and ask the funda...

Sizing a Solar set up to meet the demand of a device?
If I'm trying to power a specific device, rather than just attempt to keep batteries charged, how would I do this? Re: Question about coming from Salt Lake City
I too drove from Salt Lake last year. The drive is fine. Good roads all the way until you turn north off of I-80, and then nothing can help you. I would try to investigate the RV rentals first. I wanted to rent last year, but found it VERY expensive. Between Labor Day and Burning Man (the dealers ar...

Re: After action report from One Wheelers on the Playa?
So, two lessons right away. The OW seems to tolerate the playa well. Also, gravity has not been banned from BRC yet, so care is needed at all times. As to the "so cool, it doesn't really belong" attitude of some; that's unfortunate. Funny, the lines that could get drawn between flaming propane power...

After action report from One Wheelers on the Playa?
I know I saw a few "One Wheels" last year. My first sighting of such a creature. I wonder if such a sophisticated electronic device survived well down in the dust? Other than practically guaranteeing scrapes and bruises and contusions, they seem perfect for getting around BRC. Of course, there's the...

Straighten PVC or buy new?
Post Burn, and the Monkey Hut Rocked! Very sturdy and with the help of some end pieces, I was able to divert much of the wind either past or through the Hut as needed. Loved it. Now, the PVC ribs are pretty well bent from 2 weeks on the Playa. I thought they might self-straighten, but they don't see...

Why isn't 12 o'clock North?
Curious. My first Burn was amazing and I'll be back, but it struck me as odd that 6 o'clock wasn't due South. The Playa is vast enough and it's only a matter of orientation to align the city in whatever manner the organizers choose. If not North/South, it could have been aligned to sunrise or sunset...
