Re: Howling at the Temple Burn?

God, I love you guys.
Yes, this year will be another year, and with luck I'll be a year wiser. Last year, it never occurred to me to join in the howling; I was about silence and reverence. Perhaps this year, I'll need shushing. I promise to take it with grace.

Howling at the Temple Burn?

Last year was my first Burn, and I've got tickets for this year. It was wonderful beyond words. One interesting bit of apparent conflict was during the Temple Burn, when the howls swept across the crowd. There were clear and loud "Shhhhhh's!" in response to the howling, and then the howling would st...

Re: New burner looking at 2018. Tons of questions.

Last year was my first, so I'm still learning, but I will post one contrary opinion here. I was able to make contact with a village before the burn because of a common interest. Because of that connection, I was able to join their Build Crew, and because of that I was granted the opportunity to purc...

Re: Re-bar or Lag Screws for a Monkee Hut ?

Wow. Size matters! Are you using those to replace re-bar to locate things, or to hold things down to the playa? My lag screw search topped out at 3/8" X 14", but maybe I wasn't looking for larger. I need about 12 stakes to locate the structure of my Monkey hut and use lag screws to hold the tarps do...

Re: Hi! I'm doing a report on burning man and would like to ask several questions

I can understand the frustration on both sides of this endeavor. Last year was my Birgin year, so I was just as filled with questions and misgivings and misunderstandings as you are in trying to summarize this event in a paper. I'm a smart guy and I'm good with words and I was 61 last year for my fi...

Thanks so much! Turns out I have a dealer near me, so tomorrow I'm off to look and maybe get a test ride. Is Sextant your camp? I'm in Anonymous Village. I'll be looking for you.

Re: Thoughts on a Coleman Instant Cabin 6 Tent

Ditto. Coleman Instant 6 inside the Monkey Hut was fine. There is one small patch of mesh directly across from the entry door which couldn't be zipped closed, so it was hot glued closed. Otherwise great. One burn down and coming back in '18.

Re: Re-bar or Lag Screws for a Monkee Hut ?

You need both Lag screws and stakes/rebar. The rebar/stake is driven straight down into the playa and the PVC is placed over it. The rebar/stake locates the PVC and keeps it from sliding sideways, but doesn't hold the PVC down to the ground. Can you picture this? Rebar/Stakes only give lateral resis...

Re: Sizing a Monkeyhut.

It may be hard to get a 14ft width using 2 10ft PVC pipes as ribs. I did the standard Monkey Hut last year and it was great, but if you want headroom and if you only use 2 10ft sections of PVC meeting at the "spine", I think you'll only get about a 12ft width. You could splice longer ribs for more h...

Re: Sizing a Solar set up to meet the demand of a device?

Unnecessarily judgemental guys. Any post that begins, "You don't know enough to..." should disqualify the poster. If this isn't the place to ask questions, where should I go? Given the vast range of panels and inverters and devices contemplated, it seemed easier to cut to the chase and ask the funda...

Sizing a Solar set up to meet the demand of a device?

If I'm trying to power a specific device, rather than just attempt to keep batteries charged, how would I do this? My camp needs a pump to get the grey water from the evap pool to the grey water tank. I'm looking at one of various sump pumps at HD. All of them specify amps drawn, etc. How would I ta...

Re: Question about coming from Salt Lake City

I too drove from Salt Lake last year. The drive is fine. Good roads all the way until you turn north off of I-80, and then nothing can help you. I would try to investigate the RV rentals first. I wanted to rent last year, but found it VERY expensive. Between Labor Day and Burning Man (the dealers ar...

Re: After action report from One Wheelers on the Playa?

So, two lessons right away. The OW seems to tolerate the playa well. Also, gravity has not been banned from BRC yet, so care is needed at all times. As to the "so cool, it doesn't really belong" attitude of some; that's unfortunate. Funny, the lines that could get drawn between flaming propane power...

After action report from One Wheelers on the Playa?

I know I saw a few "One Wheels" last year. My first sighting of such a creature. I wonder if such a sophisticated electronic device survived well down in the dust? Other than practically guaranteeing scrapes and bruises and contusions, they seem perfect for getting around BRC. Of course, there's the...

Straighten PVC or buy new?

Post Burn, and the Monkey Hut Rocked! Very sturdy and with the help of some end pieces, I was able to divert much of the wind either past or through the Hut as needed. Loved it. Now, the PVC ribs are pretty well bent from 2 weeks on the Playa. I thought they might self-straighten, but they don't see...

Ok, as an aviator, that's the most reasonable explanation I've heard yet. Also, things seem to align to give Center Camp a nice sunrise over the man. OK. Good to know.

Why isn't 12 o'clock North?

Curious. My first Burn was amazing and I'll be back, but it struck me as odd that 6 o'clock wasn't due South. The Playa is vast enough and it's only a matter of orientation to align the city in whatever manner the organizers choose. If not North/South, it could have been aligned to sunrise or sunset...

Re: Freezing water bottles

Has anyone tried this with the larger water containers? 5-7 gallons? The principal is the same and the surface area/volume bit says they should thaw even slower. I may see if my local food store will let me try one overnight and test the theory.

Re: Monkey hut and Rebar questions

Updates on my MH variant: Mostly standard from the original, however a few changes. To avoid the connector issues, I've pinned two 30" lengths of 1 1/4 pvc together with a 1/4 X 4" pin with washers and a cotter pin on the bottom to keep them together. The pin connects the rib connectors to the spine...

Re: Hemming/Customizing Tarps?

Yes, my thoughts exactly. I'm no seamstress, but I can imagine folding the raw edge over and back several times onto double sided sail tape or something equivalent until a thickness is established and then grommeting. The challenge is finding some industrial sewing facility willing to take the taped...

Hemming/Customizing Tarps?

I need to alter a mesh/shade tarp for my shelter. Anyone have any guidance on doing this? I can use one original edge with grommets, but the other two sides will be curves, so I'll need to re-edge those sides. Would simply wrapping tape around the raw edge be sufficient? Generally Duct tape solves a...

Birgin speaking. I was talking with a friend about my plans for arriving, packing, etc to BM, and I mentioned that I would be hauling a "U-Haul" trailer to carry all my stuff. Re: Monkey hut and Rebar questions

I'm getting to the experimental "erection" (if you'll pardon the phrase) part of the Hut build. No PVC X connectors, I've connected two 2 1/2 ft sections of 1 1/4" PVC with a 1/4" pin with washers top, middle and bottom with a cotter pin to keep it from falling out. The two sections can rotate relat...

Re: Transporting PVC to the playa

First drive home from Home Depot went just fine. 12 10' sections of 1" and 2 10' sections of 1 1/4". No problem. Duct taped together, then bungy corded to each other and the roof rack. I was able to see the leading ends while I drove at up to 75 mph, and no tendency to flap or vibrate. I think I'll ...

Re: Transporting PVC to the playa

Good ideas. I was planning to lay them out flat with gaps between each of them and duct tape them, so each pipe was secured by tape, then roll up the whole thing. I'm not worried about what extends behind, it'll trail in the wind just fine. The leading edge bits could flail around a bit, so I want t...

Transporting PVC to the playa

I'm going to have 10-12 lengths of 10' pvc on my roof rack on my way there. Other than being securely attached to the roof rack and secured together (I'm thinking duct tape) has anyone had issues with pvc getting all wobbly in the 70+ mph breeze on the way there? I'm not so worried about the tail en...

How would someone go about getting just a vehicle pass? I have a ticket I'm able to pass on to a friend, but they're coming from another direction and are driving their own car. Is there a way to get just a vehicle pass without having to go through the ticket lottery?
