Welcome! I hope we don't end up road-tripping to Oklahoma.

Re: Should I get a canopy?
I use 10x10 straight-leg canopies, always have. I anchor with rebar at each corner, next to the legs. Another rebar about 2ft out from each corner, guyed to the top. Pool noodle sections on the rebar ends. I zip-tie shadecloth to two sides, flat, attach tarps over that with bungee cords, angle the t...

Re: how cold is it at night?
One fine morning in 2010, I discovered thin sheets of ice in my evap. Some nights it's warm enough for flimsy clothing, some nights I've been in heavy layers, plus hat and gloves. Chemical handwarmers are VERY nice. I have some hip-length fake fur coats, and a full-length wool coat. Purchase...

Seeking opinions/advice on new tent.
I'd like to find a cheap tent smaller than 10x10, larger than 8x8, with a peak height of at least 60 inches, minimal mesh. Most tents I've seen (Coleman Sundome, for example) have huge mesh panels- I'd rather not deal with covering them. I'm looking at this one- I'd prefer a full rainfly, but all wi...

Crap. Wish I had read that before I volunteered for GPE. I have 200+ days to learn that skill set. Wish me luck.and don't forget the qualification process for GPE:
Omnipotent intellect.
A rapier wit.
Cat like grace and speed.
Charm
And disarmingly attractive, to both sexes.

Re: What do I do with my bacon grease?
I fry eggs or potatoes (or both) in the grease. Going to try the biscuits this year :-) Then I wipe the pan with a paper towel or two and put those into a big paper bag with all the rest of my paper waste to burn. I have some nifty little disposable dishwashing towels (already soaped). Scrub the pan...

Re: Any way to get a Ride to Black Rock from Reno?
Another idea in addition to the rideshare desk: You can get a taxi to places where Burners stock up on supplies (like the Save Mart on Keystone). You can buy water there as well, in the 2.5 gal x2 boxes. Better than 1 gal. jugs :-) Handy list : http://www.burningman.com/preparation/travel_info/reno/...

Which $99 carport are you thinking of?
(I've been using a 10x10 First-Up and a 10x10 Ez-Up* for years. I stake and guy them really well, though.)
*The EZ-Up died after 12 years of Playa use. My error- I broke it by slamming it upside-down on the Playa while breaking it down

Re: Dust-proofing tents
Cheap tents are great! Many "good" tents have a lot of mesh. My cheapie has only 4 small mesh panels at the top (rainfly covers that), and a door with a zippered mesh 1/2 panel.

this one time,

a hippie invaded our camp and washed his ass in our cooler.
He called us 'fucking pigs' when we asked him (politely) to leave.

Lost Sunday night a few hours after the Temple Burn. Not valuable- I just regret the inadvertent MOOPing.

I have the 135, and I got it at Target. Walmart has them, also.
You can dump the holding tank every few days in the JOTS, but only if you use 1-ply paper, or put used paper/wet wipes/sanitary items in a covered bucket for later disposal.

Personal Potty
I invested in a portable toilet before my first burn. This is my sixth year, and I wouldn't think of leaving it at home. The one I bought was around $60, can't recall the manufacturer, but it isn't a Coleman. I chose it over the Coleman version because it had a rigid, foldaway drain tube on the hold...
