Re: Lottery System Feedback

Last year we sold 27,000 tickets on the first day and this year, according to the numbers in the random drawing, they expect 40,000 tickets to be sold in the first day. And possibly even more people than that trying to buy tix. I don't see how "waiting to click the 'Buy Now' button" is going to be a...

Re: Main Sale vs. Low Income timing

I mean, if youre a starving artist and working your ass off all year on a project FOR BURNING MAN, THEN you should get a discount ticket! Not a Sparkle pony! Burning man is a privlege, not a right! The whole point about the scholarship/low-income ticket process now is to get someone to read the app...

Re: 2012 TICKET PRICES INCREASED TO $390! WTF???

As I've said from the beginning, the increase doesn't seem to be justified. And the annual reports that shows expenditures are worth not even the paper they're printed on. You know that the event and annual expenses cost more last year than the took in, since you did the math. Last year they spent ...

Re: Why the lotto helps scalpers.

As cryptofishist points out, engineering a sell out earlier actually makes it a disincentive for scalpers to become involved. The Super Bowl compares because of face-value ticket price and number of total tickets, but the turn around time is just weeks.

"lazy asses" was not meant to be an indictment against anyone that does not buy tickets the first day. It was a riff off of the more common "procrastinators" and meant to inject humor into the rather dry and talky post.

Re: Web server demand is a solved problem

Only 27,000ish tickets of the 50,000 sold in the first day and then it took over 5 months to sell the rest. I doubt they expect to have 50000+ people try and get tickets on the first day. Actually, it only takes 12,500 people ordering four tickets each to sell out in the first day. If 7,000 people ...

NPR article on the economics of scalping

Here is an article on NPR about scalping Super Bowl tickets: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=18599162 (note the transcript link if you would rather read it) It's a short little blurb that suggests that an open market for ticket re-selling keeps prices lower than complicated syst...

Re: Why the lotto helps scalpers.

Lets be honest here. IT IS SIMPLE MATH. If I am a scalper, I normally agree to buy tickets, and then sell them at a higher price. The price is set by demand and initial costs. Normally, demand is made by a short supply. With a lotto, demand is created by random chance, independent of supply. If I a...

Re: Increased number of tickets available this year???

I believe the idea behind raising the pop cap each year is because we don't know the bearing capacity of the desert yet. (Or more accurately, the volunteer cleaning crew we are able to muster.) Slowly raising the limit supposedly allows us to gently reach whatever that limit is, rather than crashing...

Re: New Burningman Ticket Process - 2012

If it weren't for the lottery system, would everyone just wait and buy their tickets whenever? We saw how that system worked last year: it left perhaps 2,000-3,000 people worldwide unable to attend the event I know that many of those people would not wait this year. In fact, not buying tickets on th...

Re: Web server demand is a solved problem

I dont' think that Burning Man is saying that web server demand isn't solved. I think they are saying that last year's first day of ticket sales indicates that all of the tickets will sell out in day-one. And without some system to fairly distribute the buying opportunities within that one day, the ...

Re: Proposal to Fix Ticket Situation

Interesting proposal. There are a few things you need to clarify and a few small issues you need to overcome. First, can you use real money numbers for the transactions? I'm confused by your $30 profit, because your scenario only seems to have $15. Perhaps you would walk a single ticket through it's...

Tickets under any system (including lottery) will be sold out before the theme camp registration deadline arrives (that's in June). When BM currently only expects theme camps to need three months to prepare, it's a big jump to switch to eight month's advance notice. That's just asking for most camps...

Re: The Lottery, what will it mean for the proscrastinators?

I am of the opinion that we'll have 50,000 plus ticket sales on the first day, if we drop the lottery. Heck, last year we sold half of the tickets on the first day, despite the tech problems. Thus, a lottery is needed anyway. The old adage of "He who prepares, Burns" means nothing when everyone is a...

Why the existing ticketing model is not going to work

It is my belief that people learned their lesson in 2011. Those who wait, lose. There was a system (first-come, first-served) that initially rewarded early adopters with lower ticket prices, and then this year with just having tickets. But the slow pokes are aware of this now. Opening day for ticket...

Re: lotto and organizing theme camps/long term burners

Seems to me that since we sold out last year, everyone is now aware that they have to plan early. I would speculate that BM believes that there will no longer be people holding off until July to buy a ticket. So if that is the case, in fact if 53,000 people try to buy tickets on opening day, how do ...

I disagree with the first post. The JRS newsletter said that the two problems they needed to be addressed were: "2011 provided two compelling reasons to change how tickets are sold: a challenging ticket launch day, and then, our first-ever sold-out event. " Dealing with a sold-out event is not the s...

My first advice, useless as it might be, would be to make all of your own food and eat exactly the same meals you would have at home. The change in diet that usually happens and upending the frequency of eating are tough enough on those with a strong constitution. The second is to read the link Sava...
