Re: ? List of repair camps, bikes and otherwise?

Hey Ratty, There is an unspoken rule ( or up front that I'm not 100% aware of) about publishing aggregated camp real addresses prior to gate open. At least that is my interpretation of the few instances I have been involved with. Please stop by BRCW&R after gate open and pick up a copy of the info f...

Re: Lag screws vs everything else...

Why get those specialized chunks of metal for more than the cost of the lag screws themselves? I bought a box of run-the-mill chain from a department store for like $10 for about 30ft of chain link or something. Then bought a generic bolt cutter at the same store for about $25. That's $35 (maybe le...

Re: Lag screws vs everything else...

I've got 2- 3/8 socket driver Dewalt impact 20volts and I've got to say they struggle a bit with the 18" lags. Last year I was switching back and forth between them because they were warming up. We drive alot of lags all at once to secure the shades. For this year I bought the larger version with 1/...

Re: ? List of repair camps, bikes and otherwise?

Correct me if I'm wrong Elliot but you want someone to take this list and format it in an easy to read manner possibly arranging it by address and print about 150 of them out on reasonably tough paper and distribute them to the repair camps and Playa Info. Got it! Now we need a volunteer to gift thi...

It would not surprise me if DMV is set up to handle your legitimate last minute need for a disabled vehicle pass but are not in regular communication since they are probably in transition to on playa operations. Perhaps someone who has been in a similar situation right before the burn will crop up a...

Come on by Black Rock City Welding & Repair and volunteer in our bike shop for a few hours on Wednesday or Thursday (or any day really between the hours of 10am and 4pm) and do a couple bottom brackets. They should be squeaking in about that time. We might take a look at your bike too. 3:00 and A

It was a really great thing to have the only limit to attending be whether you could get your shit together enough to attend and pull off your gift. It would be a great thing if we could make a leap in transportation that was ...

Re: Any camp to host this LED installation?

Figuring out what will hold up to the environment on Playa is a long winded challenge. I've been 14 burns and I am still learning about structures and what does and doesn't work even in my stogy old ways. You want to let the wind go through it is what I think. A mixture of a hardened structure and j...

Re: To Shade or Not to Shade?

My vote would be a 20'x20' shade of the flat top fitting and 1"EMT variety. A shade structure that matched the footprint of your tent means some part of your tent will always be in the sun if not shaded by a large vehicle. A bigger shade lets you have your own living room in the shade and put the te...

At night I look for the spot that looks like a shadow. Since the banks are about 8 feet tall they block all low light and since there is light backing nearly everything at night even in deep Playa this works well for me. Then I verify by checking for the blue lights.

I get that. Glad you had good luck with side walls and that they most likely saved your tent. It's a good demonstration of the forces applied to side walls that the 14" lags were pulled out and a good demonstration that longer lags do matter in high force situations. Re: Only 6" of 24" lag screw is threaded

Lag screws (bolts) are based on wood fastening engineering. At a certain point it is unnecessary for wood fastening capability to add more threads as more threads will not improve the holding power or strength of the connection. More threads might work better on playa but we are repurposing a wood f...

Would "angling" sidewalls help in windy conditions ? Like using a 10' tarp on a 7' high structure and lagging down the bottom edge that is pulled out and taut (roughly 45 degrees). Many people do side walls with good results. I do not. If I were to do side walls I would angle them at a 45 degree an...

When I used an air mattress I found it was as important to have as much blankets underneath me as on top of me to stay warm. My experience is that air mattresses are very good thermal sinks and cold as hell with just a sheet on them.
